DH suddenly getting cold sores?

I might be panicking.

I’ve been with DH 6 years and he’s never had a cold sore. Since lockdown he’s been getting spots near his lips, they did look like spots, more pus-like etc. However he has now developed a spot that looks a bit too much like a cold sore. It’s very read with no head and we can’t tell what it is yet but we will find out.

I’m really anxious as I thought that oral herpes has to be caught from someone - does this mean he’s kissed someone else?

Are you ten?

What's this weird panic about cold sores recently? They're just a fact of life , you're fortunate if you don't get them them.

chickenyhead · 28/10/2020 00:05

Nobody in my family has ever had cold sores, so, err not a fact of life for everyone.

But then again I don't kiss scabby lipped people. Grin

Skyecat · 28/10/2020 00:24

@chickenyhead 6/10 people in the UK carry hsv1. Most don't know as they are asymptomatic (or have non-classic symptoms so don't realise/don't get diagnosed). You may well have kissed a carrier.

jennie0412 · 28/10/2020 00:32

I've had them before, when I was about 11, I certainly wasn't kissing anyone! Grin

DatingDickheads · 28/10/2020 00:39

Yes most people infected with HSV - 1 or 2 - are asymptomatic or the symptoms go unrecognised.

I have HSV2... luckily I know... most don’t and can spread it around.

Graphista · 28/10/2020 00:39

Given the location I'm wondering if it might actually be ingrowing hairs? But even if it is a cold sore yes he could well have been infected as a child at a time when he wouldn't remember having his first and the virus has lain dormant until now.

Could also be blocked pores due to mask use I'm not surprised there's a phenomenon of mask acne

How's his hygiene? Especially around shaving?

You sound like a prick
TheCuntOfTheLitter · 28/10/2020 00:45

Imagine that cold sores could easily be triggered by masks wearing. My
Mouth definitely feels a bit raw after an hour with a mask on

Don’t forget as well that stress is a trigger too and undeniably most of the country is pretty stressed right nowi

I don’t get them any more because I put a dab in iodine on any skin that’s starting to tingle And I think the last time I actually had one wrist was about 15 years ago while pregnant

Mytimetokillandmaim · 28/10/2020 00:48

If there's a cluster of shiny yellow/white blisters and then a crust/scab formation and it's on the lip or the edge of the lip its definitely a cold sore. Not sure if you can get them on your face, away from the lip...but I had one on my thumb so..who knows Confused

Mytimetokillandmaim · 28/10/2020 00:52

What brings them out on me is

Stress
A regular cold
Being in the sun on holiday
And accidentally biting my lip or rubbing it too hard with something. I can feel it happen almost immediately that way.
I've had them since I'm about 5. I've had bouts of about 6/7 years without them ,then I can get 3 per year. Very random. This could just be his first one op.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/10/2020 00:53

I've not had any issues, but saw an article a week or so ago about spots and outbreaks caused by masks.

notangelinajolie · 28/10/2020 00:55

I haven't had a cold sore for years. I used to get them all the time. They were triggered by sudden a change in the weather - walking to work on cold frosty mornings or a holiday abroad to a hot climate. I don't go out much these days and haven't been anywhere hot for ages - more so during this pandemic. I would also get them when I was run down.
Something will have triggered the virus in your DH - it could be wearing masks, stress, too many late nights, it literally could be anything.

InFlagranteDerelicto · 28/10/2020 00:59

How sure is he that he’s never had them before? He could have had them as a young child? My DH had them in childhood (MIL gets them regularly) but we’ve been together 20 years ish, I’ve never seen him with one & I’ve never caught them, neither has DD who is 8. Some people obviously have long periods when the virus is dormant.

LonelyFromCorona · 28/10/2020 01:00

Let's reverse this.

He got it from you. Youve had it since a child but never a flare up and have asymptomatically shed the virus and passed it to him.

Happy now?

Or its just a spot

chickenyhead · 28/10/2020 07:30

@TheCuntOfTheLitter

Awww shucks, you sound lovely on the other hand. Thank you

Benjispruce2 · 28/10/2020 07:34

Ask a gp or pharmacist. You’re mentally jumping to conclusions and you don’t even know what it is!!!
