And possibly their younger siblings?

Poltergeist
Nightmare on elm street
The Omen
Anabelle

That kind of thing?

DangerMouse17 · 27/10/2020 09:45

Not really any of those! Poltergeist ok though I think.

Goosebumps
Scary stories to tell in the dark
Ghostbuster
The house with a clock in its walls
Monster squad

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/10/2020 09:47

I wouldn’t let them watch any of those. They are all 18’s

Are you being serious?

I’m a teacher. It’s a safeguarding issue letting children that age watch films like that.

flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 09:48

At 11, Ghostbusters. At 13 I might let them watch The Woman in Black. At 15 I’d probably let them watch The Omen.

Please don’t let your 11 year old watch horror films made for adults. You’ll scare the crap out of them.

Atalune · 27/10/2020 09:49

Ghostbusters
Hot fuzz

The ones you listed and then the casual “and their young siblings”‘ er no! That’s a terrible and frankly neglectful thing to do.

ShebaShimmyShake · 27/10/2020 09:50

Are you serious??

Stick to stuff like Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas and maybe Ghostbusters if they're not too sensitive. Not three-way decapitation scenes and Johnny Depp getting liquidated and blown all over the room!

IhateBoswell · 27/10/2020 09:50

Only Poltergeist out of those, it’s pretty tame really.
The Others with Nicole Kidman is quite scary and suitable for the 13 year old.

CounsellorTroi · 27/10/2020 09:50

Annabelle is a 15. I watched it the other night though and wouldn’t recommend for 11-13 year olds.

ShebaShimmyShake · 27/10/2020 09:51

Oh, you know...well done. You got me.

unicornpower · 27/10/2020 09:51

A Nightmare on Elm street is an 18 (both versions) so I wouldn't go with that option for them as you said possibly their younger siblings too.

The rest of the ones you've listed are certified a 15 so depends if you would feel comfortable with them watching it?

The Haunting is a 12 which may be more suitable for those ages and younger? The Others is a spooky one but not TOO scary either. The Mummy is also maybe a good option?

I would steer clear of 18 certified films though, I was traumatised by The Exorcist when i watched it at a sleepover when i was 13 and it still terrifies me now because of that!

Fluffybutter · 27/10/2020 09:51

Oh my god .. none of those !
Jeez ..
Maybe Scream or I know what you did last summer ? I can’t really remember them but they’re not nightmare inducing like your list.
Cabin in the woods maybe but not for an 11 year old.

contactusdeletus · 27/10/2020 09:52

11 year olds and younger? Watching those? What?

Fluffybutter · 27/10/2020 09:52

Halloween is also pretty tame by today’s standards but again 11 or younger is not ideal

MegaBloxRoxx · 27/10/2020 09:54

I would stick to the age rating on the film and even then I would take into account the personality of the child involved. I hate horror films even now and lie awake over thinking and freaking myself out.

Sunbird24 · 27/10/2020 09:54

I watched Nightmare on Elm Street at 11 - a school friend’s parents thought it was suitable viewing for an 11th birthday party... Don’t think I slept for 3 months afterwards.

TheSandman · 27/10/2020 09:54

None of those, @SistemaAddict
I'd go with DangerMouses17's

I'd add the 1st two Addam's Family movies

Some Tim Burton? - personally I can't stand his films but my kids love them.

The Corpse Bride
Frankenweinie
Nightmare Before Christmas

  • and don't underestimate the classics. My eldest daughter was starting to get into the 1930s Universal monsters at about that age. James Whale's Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein
SistemaAddict · 27/10/2020 09:54

Unfortunately not a joke. I wouldn't let them but their dad thinks it's fine along with things like Love Actually for an 8 year old.

OP posts:
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/10/2020 09:55

Why would you let your 11 year old watch scary films? They have an age rating for a reason . I wouldn’t have wanted my children to watch anything like that at that age. Why would you want to subject them to stuff like that?

I really don’t get this at all. Even if the films are 15’s, your 11 year old is 4 years below that.

TheSandman · 27/10/2020 09:56

Well their dad is a dick. (I'm a dad.)

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/10/2020 09:57

Well he needs reporting then. I’d go insane if anyone showed those films to my children.

Yerroblemom1923 · 27/10/2020 09:58

Love Actually for an 8 year old?! It's a great film but the porn scene actors..... not something I'd let my 11 year old watch. How does he explain that?!

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/10/2020 09:58

The Others
The Watcher in the Woods (original - not seen the remake)

My 13 YO has seen both

The Woman in Black for the 13YO. My 13 YO is doing it as their text in English atm anyway

Obviously you should be sticking to things like ghostbusters, eight legged freaks, arachnophobia, the house with a clock in its walls, goosebumps etc. Don't be so quick to force your child to grow up.

Mischance · 27/10/2020 09:58

Ditch the OH - he is an idiot. Children should not be exposed to such material.

IhateBoswell · 27/10/2020 09:58

Yeah I wouldn’t be popping Love Actually on either with the simulated sex scenes, plus the fact it’s shit. What an idiot.

ShatnersBaboon · 27/10/2020 09:59

None of those is suitable for children. Poltergeist might be okay for a 13+ year old.

The pp's suggestions above are good. The newer Ghostbusters film with Kirsten Wiig is probably scary enough for older children, and there are some good laughs in there. Watching horror films with children should be about fun, not pushing them to their limits.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/10/2020 09:59

I love Love Actually but there's no way an 8 YO should ever watch it!
