And possibly their younger siblings?

Poltergeist
Nightmare on elm street
The Omen
Anabelle

That kind of thing?

Cujo sounds bloody awful, though. I love St Bernards.

DownThePlath · 27/10/2020 13:39

@Oblomov20

This thread is ridiculous. Depends on the child. Nothing scares me. Nothing ever has. Ds2 (12) is the same. No film scares him.
Same. I watched those sort of films with my dad growing up and it never bothered me. That's just the child I was. Still love horrors to this day.
Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 13:39

I went to Florida not long after to universal studios I think it was at and I refused to go on or anywhere near the Jaws ride or Amity island.😂 picturing this made me laugh.
I too am afraid of the sea but for different reasons. That and,I cant swim. Blush I'm with you Grape I shall rest firmly on dry land and respect the sea from afar Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 13:43

Oh really? I’m not sure how it’s a thriller but in my head thrillers are kind of twisty and mysterious.

Monster House is good. Your DD and my DD probably have similar taste in films.

I’m fine with most horrors but I still can’t watch The Witches

remaininshroud · 27/10/2020 13:47

Maybe you could appeal to your DC since no one else in their lives (except you) seems to have a problem with it? I did this with my DD when she was younger and going through her horror movie phase; I simply asked her not to watch the violent and disturbing ones until she was older and explained why. With DS it wasn't a problem because he was terrified of anything remotely scary.

I watched The Omen with a group of friends from school when I was about 13 and was very upset by it. The memory of it is still etched in my brain - terrifying.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 13:47

Wasnt watership down a u

Agree the witches would have scared some kids despite being a kids movie

blubberball · 27/10/2020 13:48

Death becomes her
Hocus Pocus
Ghostbusters
Addams Family

FlyingByTheSeatof · 27/10/2020 13:53

Luckily my DC have a natural fear filter so wouldn't watch horrors intentionally and if they did and they were spooked they'd turn it off or walk out the room. They were traumatised after watching Titanic and Ghost

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/10/2020 13:56

None of those are you crazy??
  1. Ghostbusters
  2. Teen Wolf
  3. Adams Family
  4. Gremlins for the older kids
VestaTilley · 27/10/2020 13:58

None of those films are suitable for under 18s. Are you being serious?

Put Hocus Pocus on and be a responsible parent.

Oh Watership Down... Another film I still refuse to watch. Not a horror though of course but my God it pulls at them heart strings. Bright eyes 💔

God I'm a mess!

CounsellorTroi · 27/10/2020 14:21

@Mytimetokillandmaim

I went to see lake placid in the cinema when I was 12. So I'm guessing it wasn't 15s. I certainly didn't look 15!!! Ah jaws, isnt that something kids watch when young?I didn't think it was classed as a horror. As a 5 year old we all knew jaws.
Lake Placid is 15 according to the BBFC website.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/10/2020 14:26

I wouldn't let my DS watch them but to be honest I watched loads of 18 cert horrors from age 11 onwards (without my mum's knowledge). I wasn't traumatised, I love horrors to this day. All kids are different.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 14:30

Lake placid could have been upgrade or pp snuck in

Terrace58 · 27/10/2020 14:54

None. I still have nightmares from watching Poltergeist as a child and I’m 46 years old.

We just watched Coraline with our 11 year old. We are thinking about doing Ghostbusters or BeetleJuice this weekend. Little nervous about Ghostbusters because there are so many sex jokes and while we don’t specifically shield dd from those, she personally prefers media without them. Trying to decide if the scares and comedy are worth putting up with the innuendo.

Terrace58 · 27/10/2020 14:56

If you want really creepy, maybe Young Sherlock Holmes.

I always liked the Monster squad.

Snufkins · 27/10/2020 14:58

I watched Scream and Children of the Corn at that age and didn’t grow up to be disturbed!

I’d go with an 80’s horror as the special effects will likely be poor and just amusing to kids nowadays.

IdblowJonSnow · 27/10/2020 15:14

Err, no. None of those!
We used to watch stuff like that at 15 and we were scared.

TheSandman · 27/10/2020 15:20

Your user name on a parenting forum is "Snufkins"! That's pretty disturbing.... Grin

borntohula · 27/10/2020 15:50

I'd let a 13yo (depending on the 13yo) watch some rated 15 films. I did at that age.

TicTacTwo · 27/10/2020 16:29

Dr Who can be a good level of scary for the younger kids although the episodes do vary. Think I read on here it assumes that the viewer is 8 or over.

SistemaAddict · 27/10/2020 16:43

I've not seen most of these mentioned and haven't even seen the ones mentioned in my OP. I wasn't allowed as a teen and had no desire to see them as an adult either. It's good to know that most posters agree with me. Yes, exH is very much the wanting to be best buddies with the kids type. I'm bad cop with my boundaries.

OP posts:
Fungster · 27/10/2020 16:48

My twelve year old DD wants us to watch a "grown up" scary film while her younger brothers are trick or treating
. I've decided on Beetlejuice. I would never even consider the ones on your list!

TatianaBis · 27/10/2020 16:50

They’re all 18s.

My 13 year old has seen The Orphanage (15) Turn of the Screw and Woman in Black.
