And possibly their younger siblings?

Poltergeist
Nightmare on elm street
The Omen
Anabelle

That kind of thing?

Thank you CounsellorTroi!!!
Oh, So because I said I laughed at The Birds and The Exorcist...I am a edgelord?🤣 wow it definitely wasn't intended to 'shock' or offend readers' its just what happened .🤣 but I shall take the name. Its....edgy..

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 11:54

references to Hitler, Nazism, fascism, or other taboo topics I definitely didn't do this though. 🤣🤷‍♀️

OhMsBeliever · 27/10/2020 11:55

My twins watched Woman in Black when they were 11. They insisted they wouldn't be scared. They were, but they enjoyed it. Whereas my then 16 yo had watched it at school and has refused to watch it again.

They also watched Sleepy Hollow at that age, which they also really enjoyed. They went through a phase of watching horror, it seems to have waned now. Though they love Supernatural which can be gory.

I watched loads of horrors when I was a kid. My mum was always explaining make up and special effects to me though. It didn't bother me. I can take or leave horror now though.

I remember my brother had the whole Nightmare on Elm Street on VHS and must have been early teens.

OohKittens · 27/10/2020 11:59

Mine love poltergeist, the birds and us. I'm more fussy on sex scenes so I wouldn't let my 10yr old daughter watch friends

namechangetheworld · 27/10/2020 12:00

Ooh, EdgeLord.

Hardly. A much more realistic response than the (presumably) grown women on here who are having attacks of the vapours over things like The Woman In Black. You see scarier stuff on the news for goodness sake.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 12:01

I've not seen the birds but the overacting of the priests in many an exorcism movie is often very comedic. Nothing to do with being edgy Confused

Its hard not to laugh when I'm.assumung they are trying to talk in Latin or maybe they make it up who knows but they sound ridiculous when they either a) exorcise or b) cast spells.

Now the topic of whether or not featuring children and the scenes they have to act out can he considered abusive is another discussion.

Scream, gremlins, Blair witch etc all did belong in the comedy section rather than horror.

All hyped up beyond belief

Not edgy to think.that way. Poor acting ruins many a movie

Feellikefrighteningyeah · 27/10/2020 12:05

Are you serious OP? Kids that age should not watch horror films !

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 12:09

Whatwouldscullydo oh God yes the acting is so bad. That priest!!Grin
Oh please may I recommend the birds to you??!! The acting is so bad it brilliant..not to mention the 'green screen effects' . You will howl with laughter

CounsellorTroi · 27/10/2020 12:12

I remember my friend at school reading novel of The Exorcist and she showed me a passage which disturbed the hell out of me. We were 12-13 I think. Never seen the film never wanted to.

In the Woman In Black:

  • child suicides (quite horrific)
  • woman hangs herself
  • zombified kids

It’s not for little children.

ShebaShimmyShake · 27/10/2020 12:24

Adults might laugh at hammy horror acting but kids probably won't.

flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 12:26

The Exorcist is horrible. That bit with the crucifix you wouldn’t want your child watching, surely?

CounsellorTroi · 27/10/2020 12:30

@flaviaritt

Yes, that was the bit in the book my friend showed me that disturbed me so much.
Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 12:31

flaviaritt there are different versions. The version I saw as a kid did not have to crucifix scene in it. And the actors recorded other lines which were dubbed over the original. My favourite one (after seeing the full version as an adult ) was where they changed one of the lines from "jesus christ " to "Judas priest " 🤣

Fattynotfitty · 27/10/2020 12:33

It completely depends on the child, at 10 my DS watched all the screams, nightmare on elm streets etc those kind of films on his own even at night. At 12 i couldnt even name all the horrors he's seen but recently he watched the insidious films on his own.
I've always loved horror films and made no secret of it so he was asking to watch them from about 5 years old lol, he's never had nightmares and its always his idea to watch them.
At 13 he's not really too interested in films at the moment but as long as he checks with me first i dont mind him watching most things.

TOADfan · 27/10/2020 12:34

Growing up my favourite movie was from dusk to dawn and I grew up watching horror movies so I can't really comment but they never did me any harm.
Tbh I found some kids movies scarier than 18s!

flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 12:35

Mytimetokillandmaim

Fair enough. But even so, it’s a film about a hysterical, terrified 12 year old under the influence of a malignant demon. She screams, vomits, urinates, writhes and swears her way through the film, mostly in her nightie. Not for kids.

Skysblue · 27/10/2020 12:35

None.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 12:38

If you watch the making if the exorcist you see how they did that.

It involved the child using a box. So she just kinda shoved the cross in and out the box. Theres also one scene where I think its regan had to wear like a harness so she could be yanked up on the bed where she sits up/falls down repeatedly apparently it was a bit loose and actually really hurt her . I think someone else received an injury/got hurt on set.

You will notice the rubber on the steps at the end too. Part of the "stunt" where the priest falls down the steps.

They cut the spider walk scene too.

Some of the actors say the filming bordered on abuse

It was a very good film though besides the over acting by the priests.

I dont think many have met the same standard if execution. Ot was a 70s movie so the effects weren't as good as they could be now so in that sense its probably a poor watch. But besides the exorcism of Emily Rose, no other exorcist movie has lived up to even exorcist

PopsicleHustler · 27/10/2020 12:47

Someone suggested hot fuzz.
There are several innapropriate terms of sex and at least the f word ten times within the first half hour, I had to turn it off. Just like shawn of the dead.

Stick to things like hotel transylvania

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 12:48

flaviaritt some kids just wouldn't be affected by it. But of course some would. I really did just laugh at it. And it was 20 years ago. I understand people shield their children from much more now. But it just comes down to each individual family . Some love horror films as much as others like Disney. Horses for courses and all that jazz.

flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 12:48

Mytimetokillandmaim

My feeling is that it’s common sense not to take that risk. Let them watch it when they are old enough, then you have nothing to worry about.

flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 12:49

But besides the exorcism of Emily Rose, no other exorcist movie has lived up to even exorcist

Great film. Definitely wouldn’t let kids watch it.

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 12:51

Evidently my mum had nothing to worry about in my case so no harm done here. I was never into Disney or anything like that. I preferred horror and comedy. But Of course I would never recommend someone show something like that to their kids just for the sake of it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 12:57

I always worried far more about the messages in Disney films .

The need to always he rescued by a man. The leads falling in live with men who kidnapped them. Non consensual kissing. Stereotypes of evil step mothers/sisters.

I mean snow-white sounds her time cleaning up for 7 men.

Women are either airheads and pretty or smart and clumsy/difficult. A brain is something they try and beat out of them to marry off as opposed to encourage. Wasnt til brave and moana came along there was another point of view.

Don't know what I'm trying to say reakky , I guess just that alot if the kids movies can he quite sinister in the messages they send and we don't even think about letting kids watch them.

We only worry if there's sex and violence and blood. Which we should but we never stop to think about how two men fighting over a princess is not romantic at all cos no one ever asks what she wants.
