And possibly their younger siblings?

Poltergeist
Nightmare on elm street
The Omen
Anabelle

That kind of thing?

Whatwouldscullydo

I’m not more worried about my 8 year old watching Pocahontas than I am about her watching Hostel, though.

Oblomov20 · 27/10/2020 13:04

This thread is ridiculous. Depends on the child. Nothing scares me. Nothing ever has. Ds2 (12) is the same. No film scares him.

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 13:05

Whatwouldscullydo yes I was never into Disney. My mum hated it all. The squeaky voices . the girls always in need of rescuing by a man ...from evil stepmothers and ugly sisters. Just the exorcist for me 🤣

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 13:11

Ny dad used to watch westerns and old movies. Hated then cos all the women were bloody helpless and needed the men for everything. Like take that stupid dress off so you can actually move and ride the horse to town yourself.

My mum liked all the , I guess they are called "chick flicks" erm he hired a prostitute, thats rape not romance. Falling in love doesn't make him any better than all the men who felt entitled to her body before him.

But I was the problem watching gory alien movies ConfusedHmmGrin

GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit · 27/10/2020 13:17

I remember the first 'horror' films my parents let me watch was Anaconda and Lake placid 🤣 I think I was about 11 and it's a 15 (I think?). I don't recall being scared by them but I did secretly watch Jaws with a friend when we were much younger than that and had to come clean to my parents because it scared the shit out of me, still to this day I don't like the ocean because of it! 😂 It's not massively scary of course but I was pretty young then and it obviously affected me as I still don't like it or the sea.

Certainly not things like Annabelle at their ages.

ShortColdandGrey · 27/10/2020 13:19

My niece who is 14 begged by DH to watch a scary film when she stayed over a wee while ago. After going through a few options she wanted to watch The Thing. He fell asleep halfway through and she got a fright from him snoring during a tense moment in the film haha

TheSandman · 27/10/2020 13:19

People react to things in different ways my oldest daughter has loved horror film since she was 10 or so and has 'enjoyed' all sorts of stuff which I find quite repugnant - we had a "you chose one, I chose one" horror double movie film night from time to time. She'd show me gory serial killer and zombie crap like My Bloody Valentine, and The Evil Dead and I'd show her things like Peeping Tom and An American Werewolf in London. The only time she got truly frightened - (not jump scare BOO! frightened) - was watching David Lynch's Eraserhead.

Scared the crap out of her.

My son aged 11 won't watch anything scary at all.

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 13:22

I went to see lake placid in the cinema when I was 12. So I'm guessing it wasn't 15s. I certainly didn't look 15!!!
Ah jaws, isnt that something kids watch when young?I didn't think it was classed as a horror. As a 5 year old we all knew jaws.

Oooohbehave · 27/10/2020 13:23

I'm fairly relaxed about ratings of films. I watch them and make my own judgement on whether they're suitable. I've not seen Annabelle but the others on that list no way.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 13:23

Jaws was a PG upgraded to 12a in 2012.

I can’t workout if OP wants to show them films or not.

Also, Love Actually doesn’t have a porn scene! It’s body doubles for a sex scene in a film. Big difference!

There was just something about Jaws. It sparked a lifelong fear of the sea in me although I know it isn't really considered scary or a horror! I was obviously just too young for it at the time and a bit of a wimp 😂
MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 13:23

Although still not appropriate I meant to say

GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit · 27/10/2020 13:25

Me and the same friend watched Cujo around the same time I remember as well. Ahh fond memories 😂 and lots of animal based films it seems!

We'd sneak downstairs at sleepovers and watch stuff whilst her mum was in bed.

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 13:26

To this day GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit still cant go to the aquarium...🤣

Mytimetokillandmaim · 27/10/2020 13:27

Oh I've never watched Cujo...should I??will I be scarred for life ??I love dogs 🤣

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/10/2020 13:28

I used to go round telling everyone that I hated jaws cos it made everyone scared of sharks and they really aren't man eaters Blush

Sure my teachers loved me

Fluffybutter · 27/10/2020 13:29

I did watch a lot of scary films when I was very young but not because my mum let me but because I had an older sister and we’d watch them when they went out .
I love horror films and I only really watch horror or comedy now.
Chick flicks are not for me!
Having said that , I still wouldn’t let my dd watch half of the films that have been suggested as at the time they did scare me , I wouldn’t go to the toilet in the night for over a month after I watched nightmare on elm street.
Dd is 9 and we have let her watch stranger things which she loves and doesn’t frighten her .
As an aside , Jaws is not horror

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 13:29

I mean, I’ve never been in the sea with a lilo that’s for sure!

Fluffybutter · 27/10/2020 13:30

Just remembered that watching Robocop at around 7 scared me and that’s not even horror!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2020 13:31

What is Jaws if it’s not a horror? You know there are kids horror films like Monster House.

GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit · 27/10/2020 13:32

@Mytimetokillandmaim

To this day GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit still cant go to the aquarium...🤣
🤣🤣🤣 honestly. My husband thinks it's hilarious but it gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

And I love horror films too now as an adult, nothing really scares me usually. But for some reason bloody Jaws just stuck with me and I can't shift it 🤣

I went to Florida not long after to universal studios I think it was at and I refused to go on or anywhere near the Jaws ride or Amity island. 😂

GrapeFruitIsTheDevilsFruit · 27/10/2020 13:33

@Mytimetokillandmaim

Funnily enough, that one never bothered me 🤣
flaviaritt · 27/10/2020 13:35

Jaws is a thriller, not a horror.

Are you taking to me ? Dd has watched Monster house more than I can count. I’d say Jaws was more of a thriller than a horror but maybe I’m wrong . I’ve never really enjoyed the animal based ones like lake placid etc.. so don’t watch them anymore
Pimmsypimms · 27/10/2020 13:36

That's shit op, I wouldn't let an 11 or 13 year old Watch any of those.
We watched nightmare on elm st with our 15 year old dd at the weekend and I'd forgotten about the very audible sex scene 🙈 let alone the blood and gore!
I'd be livid if someone allowed my underaged dcs watch those kinds of films.
We always go by common sense media as a guidance. Not that your twatty ex would consider that. Sorry you've got to put up with that kind of shitty parenting from him Thanks
