How did you get famous? What for?
I'm incredibly curious and it's been slow tonight Smile

No, unless you're involved in my very specialist area of statistics.

I've been interviewed on Radio 4, Kiss FM (!), and featured in the Torygraph, the Times, the Grauniad, and the Evening Boris (and then the hack from the latter went away and wrote a completely different story to the one we discussed).

I have all sorts of extremely tenuous links to famous people - my ex-BIL was involved in the music industry (from the sound side). I used to live with a London politician (who I was contacted by the Daily Heil about, digging for dirt). Someone I was at Primary School with is now a TV weatherman. A Radio 1 DJ (who at the time was just a tinpot local spinner) lived on my road in my youth. Another schoolfriend from secondary school is a minorly famous horror author. I'm related to an avant garde percussionist. A couple of famous cricketers were at the same school as me (although I didn't know them).

@MinnieJackson strange question!!

whatkatydid2013 · 29/10/2020 14:03

Not famous. Have a couple of friends who are. One just a little bit famous and more in her field who I went to school with (Scientist who is occasionally interviewed on tv for opinions). One widely known for work on American tv shows who I met through a uni friend getting on for 20 years ago. They both became famous as a bit of a byproduct to doing very well in their chosen careers. The tv show one meets very famous people every now and again. and still comments on how much she stresses she’ll say something really stupid to one of them (after more than a decade of being pretty famous herself - she’s been a major character in a couple of long running, very successful tv shows)

@PizzzaExpressWoking lol 😂

LittleTiger007 · 29/10/2020 14:09

I have a very famous neighbour. They only live here at the weekends (think countryside) they all fly in on two helicopters on a Friday evening and then fly out again on Sunday evening. No one ever sees them. A less famous person lives two doors up (Olympic gold medal winner) she’s lovely, always says hi as she jogs past and smiles as our dog gives her merry hell.

Any question about being famous etc, and she’s there like a whippet

fastnfurious · 29/10/2020 15:16

@Hopefullynamechanged935 any tips for a budding author?

MinnieJackson · 29/10/2020 15:30

@Hopefullynamechanged935 are you C L Taylor?

MrsJBaptiste · 29/10/2020 15:46

@LittleTiger007 Oooh, do you live near Tessa Sanderson? She seems lovely!

LittleTiger007 · 29/10/2020 15:47

Oh good guess @MrsJBaptiste, warm. Same sport and equally well known.

SendHelp30 · 29/10/2020 16:05

@LittleTiger007 Fatima whitbread?

Violinist64 · 29/10/2020 16:06

I was at school with someone who went on to become a well-known footballer in the 1980s. He is now on Talk Sport.

LittleTiger007 · 29/10/2020 17:30

@SendHelp30 👍

PhilSwagielka · 29/10/2020 18:01

@Zoflorabore

PhilSwagielka it was Jamie who I was at school with. The one with the red hair, lovely lad.
Aw, Jamie! I was a bit scared of him when I met him cos he was very ‘in your face’. He’s in a Space group on Facebook I’m in and pops up in the comments sometimes.

I think that's a really mean thing to say.

She seems a lovely who has suffered personal tragedy and I really don't think she cares that much about the Calvin Harris connection. Him as a famous person rather than a brother I mean.

CassandrasCastle · 29/10/2020 18:05

*seems a lovely woman

Badger342 · 29/10/2020 18:45

I remember being at college at 18 and my friend, also 18, dating a footballer who played for our local team. I think we were Championship at the time, and he was particularly famous as an up and coming youngster having made the first team aged 17. They didn’t last long for a few reasons, but one of them was that he couldn’t go to the pub or buy alcohol because absolutely everyone recognised him as a famous 17 year old. He couldn’t really fit into her social life. He had a couple of England caps but has never really been a huge name on a national level. He was a huge local star at 17 though.

XingMing · 29/10/2020 20:09

I was often papped in London in the 80s as a French porn star, to the point where I had to say "I'm not her".

XingMing · 29/10/2020 20:21

I was papped regularly in my early 20s in London when lots of people thought I was a very well known French porn star. I only had to open my mouth to prove I wasn't.

XingMing · 29/10/2020 20:22

Apologies, not bragging, I thought it hadn't posted so refreshed, and it did eventually pop up.

PhilSwagielka · 29/10/2020 21:14

Another one: one of my old uni housemates, who did English and Drama, is now in a CBeebies show and has written a couple of kids' books. I'm glad he's doing well these days, he was lovely.

Acappella · 29/10/2020 21:47

I did student drama with Siobhán McSweeney, aka Sr Michael in Derry Girls, and Cillian Murphy, but I would be lying if I claimed their greatness struck me at the time, or even that I remember a whole lot about it. I thought we were all equally shite.

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/10/2020 22:16

Define famous though...

I am sufficiently well known for what I do that it has pissed my sister off immensely when strangers approach me to talk about the things that I do... and sometimes people are terribly excited to meet me.

However outside very specific circles and locations, people wouldn't know me from Adam and even on occasion, an obvious (wearing the tshirt shall we say) fan of one of the things I do was unaware that I am the person who does the thing...

I do know some very famous people, and some middling famous people and some 'famous for a rather niche thing only in their own circle' people and, all sorts really.

I would hate to be (and hopefully never will!) famous in a 'everyone knows your face' way. Eugh.
