Crash! Boom! Bang! - Car accident, who's at fault?

Had a car accident earlier. Wondering what your thoughts are.

Car A had slowed down to turn into the first road on the right and was indicating.

Car B was turning left .

Not unusual to have a steady stream of traffic (lights further up the road.

Car A began turning. Car B ploughed into the side of Car A. Both drivers accusing the other. Both vehicles I'd think are write-offs.

Obligatory drawing - yes, I'm shit at drawing!

Car A

Btw, how the road is set up?Where I live, car B would rear end Car A. If it was making a left turn because that how our flow of traffic works.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 29/10/2020 20:06

@SnackSizeRaisin

But this wasn't traffic lights Hmm, and I didn't say 'who moved first' is 'how it works', but it's relevant in that if B was on the main road before A turned then B would have right of way.

Which is why we can't really know who was right or wrong in this (possibly fictional based on the changing injuries) scenario.

B may well have been able to move well before A, as the gap in the traffic would have allowed them to. And A would have been able to see that B was now on the main road before moving off.

I hold an IAM Advanced Driver membership, and main road -> side road has priority over side road -> main road. Police officer concurred

I'm sorry i dont understand this. What does the arrows mean? Main road side road has priority over side road main road. What does that mean in terms of the accident.

Everyone knows main road has priority over side road, but where does that leave you? the van driver was on the main road so he is right? Or you were on the main road first, therefore you had right of way?

MountainPeakGeek · 29/10/2020 20:36

I'm ok, bit of whiplash and back pain.

A rather major "keeping your BS story straight" failure there OP.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/10/2020 20:39

This thread is so frustrating with OP's lack of updates and lack of consistency

If you're going to post, at least come back to the thread & answer poster's queries!

I'm also curious to have the medical situation clarified! As I'm nosey

I'm sure the arrows mean "turning into".

So a car turning off a main road onto a side road has priority over a car doing the opposite is what she appears to be saying.

Blueberries0112 · 30/10/2020 01:23

I am still confused about the flow of traffic.... is it like this?

Assuming this took place in the UK, that's everybody driving on the wrong side of the road.
Blueberries0112 · 30/10/2020 02:47

"Assuming this took place in the UK, that's everybody driving on the wrong side of the road."

That's I drive in America but I had to make sure it is different in UK

LordLancington · 30/10/2020 02:54

Only read first few pages but surely if A was indicating to turn the B should have known not to pull across.

alexdgr8 · 30/10/2020 02:54

yes, we drive on the right side of the road in the UK, which is the left.
like other civilised countries, eg japan, india, australia, NZ,
many parts of southern and east Africa, the Caribbean, pakistan, bhutan, bangladesh, indonesia, ...

alexdgr8 · 30/10/2020 02:56

funny how OP hasn't come back to clarify her his injuries ?

I didn't know. I have never been outside of my country.
NoWordForFluffy · 30/10/2020 05:03

Have you never watched any British TV?

Blueberries0112 · 30/10/2020 05:44

@NoWordForFluffy

Have you never watched any British TV?
Doc Martin

Briefly dr. Who

There may be others but It is not on the top of my head. But I never paid attention to the driving part. I do know their steering wheel is the opposite

Blueberries0112 · 30/10/2020 05:46

PBS plays a lot of mystery from British tv. Ms Marple, father brown(??) and I watch a lot of those but again, I was focusing the story, never paid attention how they drive

StanfordPines · 30/10/2020 07:11

But surely ‘some countries drive on the other side of the road’ is just standard knowledge.

My young children already know this! 🤷‍♀️

I am sure it is standard knowledge not to bully which you are trying way too hard.
SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 09:22

That's not bullying.

Blueberries0112 · 30/10/2020 09:42

If you say so. Doesn't change my mind because she wants me feel certain way.

I never thought other countries drive like US. I always thought they had their own rules on the road. I wasn't going to assume without checking. And I never cared how people drive because I don't care for driving myself. Although I have been driving for over 30 years

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 10:00

Expressing surprise & disbelief that someone doesn't realise not everyone drives on the same side of the road as America is not bullying.

LakieLady · 30/10/2020 10:16

Op clearly chanced it as she said he wasnt indicating.
Why would you risk pulling across if you didnt know what he was going to do?

Not necessarily, @Nomad2009. If he had been turning right, his indicator would have been on his nearside and not visible from the direction the OP was coming from. Normally, you can get a bit of a clue from the position of the car on the minor road, but not if it's a narrow road and a tight corner.

We have a road like that where I live, and it also has piss poor visibility.

cologne4711 · 30/10/2020 10:20

@LordLancington

Only read first few pages but surely if A was indicating to turn the B should have known not to pull across.
No, because B was waiting to come out of a different side road. B would expect A to give away to them once they were out of the road. It's not 100% either way in my view, but I think A should have waited for B. Also people wouldn't necessarily check left, only right.

I wonder how on earth B was going so fast that they caused such a major collision - all I can think was that they were approaching the end of their side road at some speed, there was nothing coming, and it's not a sharp turn so they were able to maintain speed going round the corner onto the main road.

LakieLady · 30/10/2020 10:26

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

Just to clarify — in my case, people wouldn't let them across if the traffic was moving quickly, but it tends to be nose to tail. Often "B's" only chance to pull out is because somebody is turning into that road he's on.

There weren't so many cars when the second road was build in the 50s!

Now that hadn't occurred to me.

Maybe car B thought car A was intending to turn into the road he was leaving. I've seen near misses at a similar junction locally.
