I don't want shit food from the US

So word has it BJ is waiting to see who wins US election. Trump = no deal with EU. Biden = half arsed attempt at EU deal.
I think Trump might win because too many people are so gullible and brainwashed.
So how can we avoid eating crap food from the US? Thus far EU standards have protected us from dangerous additives, excessive phalates in packaging, the list is long.

Clavinova I don’t understand why you keep persisting in linking to Aldi’s website. We all clearly understand their position at the moment, the purpose of the thread is to speculate about might happen to our food standards post transition.

Do you actually understand what the purpose of Trade Agreements are? Do you understand that by lowering or removing tariffs in one sector, in this case agricultural, this is a conscious decision by the government to expose the sector to increased competition from abroad, surely you can see why British farmers are worried about this, that it may make their business model unviable?

FTAs are mostly trade offs, in which one party agrees to expose some domestic sectors to increased competition from abroad, in exchange for the other party removing tariffs on items in sectors that we want to sell to their market. A sensible agreement with the US, for example, is that we agree to lower or remove tariffs on imported Bourbon, in exchange for the US removing or lowering tariffs on Scottish whiskey.

Unless we also lower our farming standards, how do our farmers continue to compete? The government could choose to protect the sector by not exposing them to increased competition of course, by keeping tariffs in place, but this would probably result in no FTA at all.

ptumbi · 28/10/2020 07:38

Quite, Lemonsyellow. And British farmers will soon have to start using US welfare standards.

The US has one of the highest rates of food poisoning in the world. That's down to the shit meat, and crap welfare of the animals.

That will be coming to us.

Baaaahhhhh · 28/10/2020 10:55

And British farmers will soon have to start using US welfare standards

You don't have much faith in British farmers then. We already exceed required EU standards. Why should they reduce their welfare? And don't throw in the argument that they have to lower standards to compete. They don't. They are selling a premium product. There is no reason to reduce it.

This thread is just bat shit crazy.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 28/10/2020 11:09

So why are the NFU members petitioning against allowing imports of lower standard food, if they don’t think it will affect their businesses?

Mamamia456 · 28/10/2020 11:11

Just don't go down the food aisle that smells of chlorine. Problem solved.

Orkneys · 28/10/2020 11:26

Grin you sound like you're awake at night worried about this. US haven't got much of a choice I feel quite sorry for them.
I think you can work around it if you are that worried find a butchers and you can buy from farm shops. You know most of our food isn't British anyway. That's why our farmers are in trouble and local shops close down. Is it just US food you are worried about? I suggest you read the labels.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2020 11:47

you sound like you're awake at night worried about this. US haven't got much of a choice I feel quite sorry for them.

Don't bother. There is plenty of healthy food available at any supermarket in the US. I can choose to pay $2 per pound for standard boneless chicken breasts or $3.49 for the organic version, raised without antibiotics, no chlorine rinse, etc.

Clavinova I don’t understand why you keep persisting in linking to Aldi’s website.

Because some posters were claiming that people on low incomes would not be able to afford British meat sourced from British farms;

"According to trade magazine The Grocer, Aldi is officially the cheapest supermarket…again"

"Do you actually understand what the purpose of Trade Agreements are? Do you understand that by lowering or removing tariffs in one sector, in this case agricultural, this is a conscious decision by the government to expose the sector to increased competition from abroad."

Of course I understand.

Unless we also lower our farming standards, how do our farmers continue to compete?

Have we lowered our farming standards to match countries such as Poland?

I suppose you think the EU can't be trusted when it comes to trade negotiations and members' interests? For example, the now defunct EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement - you obviously think the Former European Commissioner for Trade was lying to Irish farmers here?

“For this agreement to be a win-win…carefully managed quotas will ensure that there is no risk that any product will flood the EU market and thereby threaten the livelihood of EU farmers,” he said."

No wonder the UK's trade negotiators thought the EU were acting in bad faith if they can string a line like that to Irish farmers;

www.thejournal.ie/beef-farmer-trade-deal-4702670-Jun2019/

You disagree with CETA as well?

"24 July 2019 - France approves controversial Canada trade deal."
"The French government has approved a controversial trade deal with Canada this week, amid intense debate and critics who say that the plan will allow unfair competition and cause ecological concerns."

@Orkneys

There won’t be any labels! That’s the point of this thread.

Clavinova · 28/10/2020 13:13

Lemonsyellow
Products from around the world will have to be relabelled for the UK to remove country of origin if we want a trade deal with the US.

Complete nonsense.

Which countries have already signed up to the special trade deal with the US where there are no labels with country of origin?

Baaaahhhhh · 28/10/2020 14:15

There won’t be any labels! That’s the point of this thread

The point of the thread is that we are debating whether there will or will not. Some people think we will accept this condition, some people think we won't. Some are pointing out that this condition has not been accepted by any other country in the world, so why would we? Some people think that we will do whatever it takes to get a deal.

We are debating the outcome of something that is in negotiation. Therefore any outcome is possible. Make your feelings known. Write to your MP's, sign petitions, lobby supermarkets, and food producers. A small group of farmers in Walloonia blocked the EU wide TTIP - I don't see why we can't do the same.

Blueberries0112 · 28/10/2020 14:37

Yeah, I wouldn’t like it if they remove labels too. I would definitely speak out about it.

Blueberries0112 · 28/10/2020 14:41

But i wouldn’t worry too about it either. There are a lot of people living over 90 years old and ate American food. I would only worry about too much of anything like sugar and salt. Moderation is always to key

Rummikub · 28/10/2020 15:14

think that’s the point of the thread - to raise awareness and hopefully more people will raise concerns with MPs. Sign petitions for what it’s worth. Just make noise.
I doubt most would be happy to eat poor production standard food.

It bothers me though that some are saying I’ll use farm Shops etc; but What about those that cannot? Or those without choice -schools, hospitals, prisons, those on lower incomes.
Plus the threat to U.K. farming

Sostenueto · 28/10/2020 15:26

It's chlorinated chicken to make it safe for human consumption because of the god awful conditions the chickens are reared in in America. Same with beef injected with hormones and God knows what else. U get what u voted for and it will be sitting in our shelves before long and bought by those that cannot afford decent meat mainly the poor thus prolonging animal cruelty forever. But hey u won't be buying it if u got more money than the majority of people do just breeze on past in the aisle as one poster said. It will put our farmers with higher food standards outbid business but don't worry people in the HoC will be making loads of money off the back of Brexit which was the whole idea in the first place for the rich to get richer the poor to get poorer and eat shit food. Welcome to the Tory run country!!

Teddy1970 · 29/10/2020 01:26

It's not chlorinated chicken as such, (although the thought is still a bit yuck) we drink chlorinated tap water and eat pre packed salad washed in chlorinated water, It's why US farmers need to use chlorine on chicken in the first place is the problem. Chicken farming in the US is intensive and cruel, caged chickens riddled with disease and parasites living in horrific, miserable conditions, the chlorination stage is to rid the bird of any disease or parasites. It's grim.

dayslikethese1 · 29/10/2020 03:14

It's the poor who will suffer most (as usual). People are already struggling, needing food banks etc. They will be the ones to buy the dodgiest food. But no-one will be able to avoid it completely.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 29/10/2020 09:17

Anyone who thinks this is ok needs to read up on the guy biome starting with 10% Human. This is a disaster for our health, and an absolute joke because of all of the many things the US does well food is NOT one of them. Eating food with this level of processing is incredibly bad for you.

Anyone remember Morgan Spurlocks McDonald's documentary? He ruined his health in weeks eating just McDonald's. It's just more shit food and the badly educated and poor will get sicker and sicker and it will cost the NHS a fortune. It's already gone too far.

It will be in every ready meal, every takeaway, every bit of cheap food or frozen food. Every school, nursing home and hospital. Every work canteen - everywhere.

We already have the worst food in Europe and to lower the bar even further makes zero sense. Avoiding it will cost a fortune and take hours of precious time.

Mokusspokus · 29/10/2020 09:22

I only buy meat from butcher who knows its provenance and has a reputation to uphold if it lied and waitrose.

Waitrose are the only supermarket not dragged into the horse meat scandal in Romania etc.

Unfortunately the eu has no power or teeth to uphold the standards they profess, there are still very different standard and inequality over the eu.. Their pig farming is way behind our own in the UK.

Just buy British where you can.

Lemonsyellow · 29/10/2020 10:28

Just buy British where you can.

How will you know if what you are buying is British? What do you mean by “British”?

SerendipityJane · 29/10/2020 10:37

Just buy British where you can.

Have you cancelled the cheque ?

ZombieFan · 29/10/2020 21:39

How will you know if what you are buying is British? What do you mean by “British”?
Ummm ask the butcher which local farm the meat came from? Do you really think butchers will be banned from answering that question?

Toontown · 29/10/2020 23:27

@ZombieFan you may well have a butchers near you but we don't have that luxury. We are stuck with whatever is offered at the supermarket. And the animals in who have to suffer even more because of this deal have even less of a choice and we are the only ones that can protect them by rejecting any worsening of animal welfare.

ZombieFan · 29/10/2020 23:38

We are stuck with whatever is offered at the supermarket
You can ask whoever is behind the meat counter if its that important to you? Also you can order online from a lot of local farms. The idea that people will be 'forced' to eat random unknown meats is ridiculous.
