To think if you live in a London Borough you live in London

Saw this on twitter and thought about it twitter.com/yougov/status/1319226163278057472?s=21

Why does this create such controversy?

Surely If you live in a London Borough you are part of London.

I can’t see how anyone can live somewhere which has red buses, can vote for London mayor, pays council tax to a London Borough and maintain they live in Essex or Kent or Surrey.

Is it about pretending to be posher?

@coldwinternightsbrrr

Brentford, Croydon, Harrow, Epping, Windsor, Twickenham are not London.
Harrow is. Green fields, hill and all. So is Ruislip - and indeed Uxbridge. And Northolt.

@Gemma2019

This just reminded me of an overseas client of mine from many years ago who bought several buy to let flats as investments, sight unseen. He wanted to sue as the seller had told him they were "just outside London". They were in Leeds! Grin
"Leeds London airport" will be a thing. You know it will.
Amanduh · 23/10/2020 19:09

London boroughs don’t mean London culturally and in practice. It might technically be a London borough but we all known that Havering and Bromley aren’t properly London. Bushey and Watford aren’t even close! You can say some
places are technically but they don’t count in reality, we know what proper London is. Just the way it is Wink

I grew up in Walton on the Hill. They eventually built the M5 about 600 metres from our house. You could never call Walton part of London, like Headley, Ashtead, Epsom Downs, they were essentially rural areas before they were ruined. I used to live in Sutton in the 80s and it had a Surrey address but a London phone number. It didn't really know what it was even then.

Reedwarbler · 23/10/2020 19:17

Sorry, M25, not M5. That's what I live close to now!

Breadandroses1 · 23/10/2020 19:19

Nice to see other Bromley-ites here! I'm London end of the LBB with a London postcode (a few streets away from Lewisham and Southwark) and we are definitely London. It feels like London, looks like London. There's quite a lot of local ribbing of people in BR1 postcodes who think they live in Kent...

Admittedly Downe and the other Bromley villages do feel different, but they vote for the mayor, have TFL. London. Whether they like it or not.

coldwinternightsbrrr · 23/10/2020 19:19

As a West Londoner I would view Northolt and Ruislip as Middlesex. If I was writing to someone I would not put Northolt London. I would put Northolt Middlesex.
Ealing, Acton, Hammersmith are London areas.

Breadandroses1 · 23/10/2020 19:22

No @Amanduh Bromley is massive! The inner bit is as London as it comes (which is why the council don't like it). We share an MP with Lewisham.

Hiddennameforever · 23/10/2020 19:32

I used to live in Edgware and I always said I live in London. I hated adding Middlesex.

CecilyP · 23/10/2020 19:43

You just need to put Northolt and the postcode. There is no need to add a county that ceased to exist 55 years ago. Ealing and Acton also left Middlesex on the exact same day as Northolt despite having London postcodes.

AdoptedBumpkin · 23/10/2020 19:46

This is a tough one. I would say the outer boroughs are Greater London, rather than inner city London. In a sense, yes and no. It depends on your individual view really.

Lndnmummy · 23/10/2020 19:47

I went to Uni with someone insisting they were from North London. Said person was from Flitwick. That’s Bedfordshire and no where near London! I also worked with two colleagues who insisted they lived in Kent. Orpington and Beckenham respectively. More London than Kent to me

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/10/2020 19:58

I live in a small market town just outside Bristol - which is a city AND county. We have a Bristol (BS) postcode and landlines have a Bristol dialling code.
We live in the county of Bath and North East Somerset to whom we pay our council tax etc, and live in the constituency of North East Somerset (JRM constituency).
To confuse things we often get mail with Avon as the county. Avon only existed as a council from 1974-until the 1990's ...

AdoptedBumpkin · 23/10/2020 20:01

@Lndnmummy Strange. Maybe she was thinking that Luton Airport is known as London Luton, so she was basically London? Still seems strange and desperate.

Xenia · 23/10/2020 20:03

I don't care. I like in an outer London borough in zone 5. It is London but if people want to say it isn't London it doesn't bother me.

ibblebibbledibble · 23/10/2020 20:06

I used to live in Stanmore, I didn’t count that as living in London. On the outskirts.

woodhill · 23/10/2020 20:10

I always use Middlesex and so do most people i know in the area

woodhill · 23/10/2020 20:13

Greater London but not London, leafy suburbs for now

AntiHop · 23/10/2020 20:13

Middlesex ceased to exist in 1965. It only exists as a postal area.
RedMarauder · 23/10/2020 20:16

@BlackLambAndGreyFalcoln some of those places have red buses and have the met police policing them.

woodhill · 23/10/2020 20:17

Apparently according to Facebook Ruislip is in Slough so Berkshire don't you knowSmile

Blossomhill123 · 23/10/2020 20:17

I live in the London of Havering but it says Essex on my address .
Where am I ?

Floozymum · 23/10/2020 20:23

Personally I like to think that if you are on the underground map in a zone that it's still classed as London. I am zone 7 so I'm just clinging on...
