To think if you live in a London Borough you live in London

Saw this on twitter and thought about it twitter.com/yougov/status/1319226163278057472?s=21

Why does this create such controversy?

Surely If you live in a London Borough you are part of London.

I can’t see how anyone can live somewhere which has red buses, can vote for London mayor, pays council tax to a London Borough and maintain they live in Essex or Kent or Surrey.

Is it about pretending to be posher?

@CecilyP Ooh, very interesting to know! Funny how no one would argue Leyton isn’t London, go two stops on the central line and, boom, people will tell you adamantly you DO live in Essex.

@JoJoSM2 She is quite the fan of the higher end stuff. There is a department store in Wimbledon she really likes.

God knows what she thinks of plumstead Grin

^The village of Knockholt in Kent was included in the Orpington district in 1934. After the GLC came about Orpington was integrated into the London Borough of Bromley. The villagers campaigned, and in 1969 became part of the Sevenoaks district of Kent, severing its ties with London.

However, TfL London buses R5 and R10 serve the village, and is still in TfL's Zone 6.^

It's even more bonkers than this, I live about a mile from the station (in Sevenoaks district) but the actual village of Knockholt is a full three miles from the station bearing its name. It shouldn't even be called Knockholt station - probably should be Halstead station as that's the closest proper village.

Would say that it definitely doesn't feel like London here, it's a 10 minute drive to the nearest shop and it's pretty much just farmers fields. It's great that the station is in zone 6 though as the fare jumps dramatically once you are on to the next stations of Dunton Green, Sevenoaks etc.

TfL buses go quite far out of London. I’ve seen some in Dorking, for example. I also know several actual villages that are in zone 6 but not in London.

@baller20

Oh yes I remember the Blue Orchid, was there a buffet? Shame about the fag burn, I remember some dick burned a hole in my brand new velvet coat one night in Kingston. Kids are so lucky to have no smoking these days.
Oh, I vaguely remember a buffet. Not that I ever touched it. I'd forgotten about it.

I was sensible too, hence the freedom. I don't think my younger brother (a complete liability) was allowed into C. London until he was about 16.

You weren't a million miles from me then. I was a few stops down in between Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon, and a 10 minute walk to Wimbledon station for the District Line if I so wished (that came later when I started hanging out in Fulham)

@JoJoSM2
These days I do a mix of W. Village style shops and high street, but back then, it was teen high street all the way. In fact, I still have my C&A jacket. I never wear it, but it's like a treasured heirloom. I can't bear to part with it.
