To think this woman was being bitchy?

I went into a local charity shop earlier today.

I started to have a look through a rail of tops in sizes 6, 8 and 10 (I'm a size 6-8 and a small build), and the woman behind the counter said 'they're all small sizes my love, they won't fit you'. I said 'No it's fine thanks, they're my usual sizes'.

She didn't say anything until I moved onto the jeans rail when she came over to me, and said again 'Those are all small too my love, the 14s and 16s are there'

I said 'No it's fine, these are my sizes' and she looked me up and down and just walked off.

I'm not saying at all that there is anything wrong with being a size 14 or 16 but they're not my sizes, and I don't look anywhere near those sizes.

AIBU to think she was just being nasty?

Yes. Rude bitch. You could have been buying for someone else, not yourself anyway.

FTMF30 · 22/10/2020 16:46

I'd say more of a busy body than anything. I can't stand over zealous shop staff. She should have let you have a look at the clothes in peace.

Givemeabreak88 · 22/10/2020 16:47

Wow I regularly buy clothes for my daughter in size 8 which I’m clearly not , I wouldn’t expect anyone to comment on it!

Sighing000 · 22/10/2020 16:48

Yeah some people are just bloody rude for no reason. The other day a stranger laughed at me and said "Wow you deserve a medal for that hair!" .. normal brown shoulder length, nothing sticking up.

Can't think of any other reason than he was a random bitchy man.

EvaporatedHour · 22/10/2020 16:48

I don't look anywhere near a 14-16, I'm 5ft 5 and just over 8 stone so I'd be astounded if she genuinely did think I was those sizes. I think that's the thing that makes me think she was being bitchy rather than over zealous.

We’re you wearing a massive coat or something?

No, skinny jeans and a thin jumper.

This is redic. I'm a 22 now that's different to an 8 or 10. But having been a 14/16 before I can say it's very different to your size. She was being rude.

Nutmegpapaya · 22/10/2020 16:51

Yeah she was being very rude!

I was also going to ask if you were wearing a big coat or something but tbh that doesnt matter anyway!

Liverbird77 · 22/10/2020 16:52

She had no right to pass any comment.
I hate shopping because of this. I want to browse in peace and I'll ask for help if I need it! She was rude. Ignore.

Blueberries0112 · 22/10/2020 16:54

She is terrible. Something is wrong with her head for her to look at your body and decided to make you feel bigger than you actually are. Jealousy?

Iftheclouds · 22/10/2020 16:55

Yes she was very rude and spiteful.

WitchesSpelleas · 22/10/2020 16:56

It's seems very odd.

Suppose, for the sake of argument, you saw someone who was an obvious 14+ browsing the size 8s, surely the first assumption of any normal person would be that they were buying for someone else?

Magic00 · 22/10/2020 16:57

Have you been watching too many charity shop sue clips?? 😂

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/10/2020 16:59

Bizarre! Maybe she has some cognitive issues that weren’t immediately obvious. There’s a lady at a charity shop I frequent who is extremely chatty and over the top. I’ve always assumed she had a learning disability as her way is just a bit off.

SummerHouse · 22/10/2020 16:59

I would go back tomorrow with bags bulging with size 8s from a rival charity shop.

"Big mistake. Huge!"

Smallsteps88 · 22/10/2020 17:01

Very strange.

Haha I love it!

I did actually buy a load of size 8 stuff from the shop today, and she didn't talk to me at all the whole time she served me at the till.

mercutio12 · 22/10/2020 17:05

That's so odd. With your measurements there's simply no way she could have thought you are a size 14, what a strange woman.

LaMarschallin · 22/10/2020 17:05

It wasn't in Buxton, was it?

I had a very similar experience in a charity shop there.
There was a dress in the window which was ideal for a murder-mystery evening I was going to.
Went in and asked about it, and the (slightly older, slightly larger than me*) assistant pointedly looked me up and down, and said "Ooh, I don't know...".
I was taken aback, but thought, "Well, it is a bit age-inappropriate" and said, 'It's just for fancy dress".
To which she said, "Mmm, but it's a size 12" .
I'm usually a size 10 and told her so.

"It's a very small size 12 though".

So I just left.

2 hours later, full of l'esprit de l'escalier, realised she was too bone-idle to take it out of the window and I should have insisted she did, maybe claiming it was for my younger sister, than said I didn't want it. Huh!

*I know that shouldn't matter to me but did. Still does Blush

MJMG2015 · 22/10/2020 17:08

I put her down as 'challenged' rather than deliberately nasty.

But just to say, your tone about clearly not being 'those sizes' is pretty unpleasant.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/10/2020 17:10

I had the same happen to me in an Oxfam once?

"Excuse me, what size is that dress in the window?"

"Well, it won't fit you"

I genuinely felt like that scene in Pretty Woman

I complained to Head Office, they were shocked and apologetic.
