Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

*I also don’t agree with funding children’s meals during school holidays.
*During lockdown when they would normally have been at school - yes that makes sense.
Other normal school holidays - no

This!! I'm guessing that's why they are objecting to it. Because if they start funding it in holiday times then they will never be able to take it back without backlash. The country does not have the money for FREE everything unfortunately. Especially now. Confused

And I know I know...the children don't deserve it, it's not there fault and I totally agree. But I also think it's so complicated and people/parents DO need to be accountable.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 22/10/2020 11:23

I have never been more angry than I am with this. Children have no control over family finances but they always suffer. These bastards are beyond cruel.
I’ve contacted my local bastard MP and told him what I think.
Anyone who ever votes Tory again is condoning child poverty and hunger.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 22/10/2020 11:24

Even Farage is against this Tory vote.

Fuckityfucksake · 22/10/2020 11:24

My MP is labour and she voted yes!
I don't always agree with her but on this 100%
We all know that parents should be feeding their children but sadly for many it isn't happening and for whatever the reason it's the kids that suffer.
Such a disgrace that the 319 bastards who voted no don't care about this.

Ginfordinner · 22/10/2020 11:25

Bloody Miriam Cates votes against anything good that can help people. We are in a rural community and she won't support the local farmers either.

Why were people stupid enough to vote for her? Grr!

WrongKindOfFace · 22/10/2020 11:26

@Rosebel

It's disgusting. Amazed my MP isn't on there. I don't think it's fair to say money is being wasted on PPE though.
It is is you’re giving contracts to companies who fail to produce fit for purpose PPE.

There have been some choice comments from Tory MPs. Will try and find five mins later to add them.

My MP is up there too. That's not surprising though. I live in a very rural area, the local economy revolves around farming and the MP recently voted against laws protecting British farmers so that the Americans can flood us with toxic meat. You couldn't make this up.

Totally agree with this.
VinylDetective · 22/10/2020 11:29

Mine’s there but I knew he would be before I checked. He’s just Tory cannon fodder, he’d vote to sell his children if the PM decreed it. Despicable cypher.

Whiskyinajar · 22/10/2020 11:29

I am lucky, there's only me, DH and DS. DH lost all his work with lockdown and I am Carer for our son who is autistic.

We managed for several months thanks to savings bit have now run out and are on full UC.

DH getting sporadic work.

As I am a good cook [polishes crown] and there's just the three of us we won't suffer.
I do worry about families who have several hiodren to feed though and who don't know how to cook.

@DeliciouslyFemale

I went to a very small primary school and well remember one of the ‘dinner ladies’, who used to keep a couple of puddings hidden in the kitchen. She would then sneak my little sister and I around to an out of bounds area and give them to us. We went to school hungry and spent all day hungry, due to neglect. That woman was a saint.

I know also, that before my daughter (SN and autistic) came to me, she suffered hunger because of her neglectful birth parents. She used to hide food in her room, because she wasn’t used to being fed regularly or being permitted to grab a yogurt or fruit, whenever she wanted.

It absolutely breaks my heart to think of children still going hungry, due to neglect or poverty. The government had an opportunity to help those children but instead say it’s up to the parents, not considering that many of those parents either can’t afford to or don’t actually care. I’m an atheist, but the story of Pontius Pilate springs to mind.

This.

Children get so hungry, and an undernourished child cannot learn, and is likely to get more badly behaved due to low blood sugar.

A dinner lady I knew said they tried to give greater portions to children she knew only got one meal a day.

Hunger is very distracting. Growing kids need adequate food.

redcarbluecar · 22/10/2020 11:30

I don’t have to look at the list to know that my MP is NOT there, which is a comforting thought at least.

movingonup20 · 22/10/2020 11:32

Mine didn't vote, not sure if he abstained deliberately or was otherwise engaged elsewhere. He usually toes the con line though

My understanding of the main reason for objection to it was because it was put forward by Labour.

Not sure what is "complicated" - it's just extending help for an already highly disadvantaged group at a time of national crisis.

We always find plenty of money for governments (of any party) pet projects and political friends - so why not hungry kids?

So did our MP. She is utterly useless and doesn't represent the community. The area we live isn't suitable for growing many crops, so it is mainly sheep and cattle farming.

he’d vote to sell his children if the PM decreed it. Despicable cypher.

The consensus where we live is our MP is only interested in her career.

@DeliciouslyFemale Sad

TeddyIsaHe · 22/10/2020 11:35

If a private company was providing the FSM the Tories would have voted it in in a heartbeat.

As it is, it’s just feeding children, and can’t make any of their friends rich, so they don’t give a fuck.

I am so angry. With Tories, their voters and anyone trying to make this seem as anything other than a disgusting act.

movingonup20 · 22/10/2020 11:35

@Mumoftwoyoungkids

Or he wasn't in the house because he was busy elsewhere. We may have the same mp, he usually votes with the government but he has defied them in the past too.

Ginfordinner · 22/10/2020 11:35

I wish we had the MP in the next constituency. He seems to act for his constituents rather then himself.

WokesFromHome · 22/10/2020 11:36

The Tories are sending us back to the workhouses. We have to do something about it, but don't know what.

They actually callous in their treatment of people.

Why are we able to find funds to pay for our MP's food Bill's then? Surely they earn enough money to pay their own way? No one pays for my lunch so why are they different?
GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/10/2020 11:39

'The Tories are sending us back to the workhouses. We have to do something about it, but don't know what.'

How on earth do you get through the day with this level of hysteria?!

'Workhouses' my arse 🙄

UrgentShitter · 22/10/2020 11:39

Surely "free school meals" during holidays when schools are closed is just a very illogical and random way to give away money to people who may be more hard-up than average.

If this was actually about helping people, as opposed to being a political point-scoring gimmick, the people asking for it would be asking for some sort of enhancement to mainstream benefits.

There may be something I've not understood about this proposal, I haven't been paying much attention.

Sh05 · 22/10/2020 11:39

I hope someone is keeping a tally of all these tory fuck ups, the British public is well known to be forgetful. Come election time the Tories will make more promises the gullible electorate will fall for unless there's an excellent opposition

Justforphoto · 22/10/2020 11:40

I'd support it if there was any guarantee that the vouchers would be used to feed the children but there isn't that guarantee, the children who really need the help still wouldn't get it. I am in favour of targeted projects being put in place to physically feed those children. I don't want anyone going hungry I just don't think this is the way to achieve it. Before anyone asks yes I do get fsm for my daughter so I would have benefitted.
