To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

Douglas Ross pledges free school meals under Scottish Tories

Even made a very twee video with him, his wife and son sitting on the sand at a beach talking about the importance of children being fed.

Voted no

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 22/10/2020 09:57

This is awful, and I’m as labour as the next bleeding-heart socialist (committed and active party member)

But I’m also interested in their stated reasons, someone unthread mentioned one said “it’s Labour’s attempt to derail action on covid” or something.

Was this bill tacked on to something else, does anyone know?

NellyJames · 22/10/2020 09:57

I had a glimmer of hope for mine last week when he aligned himself with the stance Andy Burnham was taking despite being a very high profile Tory. But he’s fallen back in line despite the uncomfortable reality that our very affluent borough borders Wythenshawe, one of the most deprived areas of Greater Manchester and the area where Marcus Rashford grew up.

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'Witch-hunt or accountability?'

No, it isnt 'accountability'. Twitter is full of 'ToryScum' vile comments, the bile and vitriol online is shocking. Disagree, challenge yes. Just without the pitchforks. I read that many MPs have panic buttons in their homes. So yes, how they vote should be anonymous imo.

Covid has really brought out the pack mentality in some people.

Mismanaged leadership has bought out the pack mentality. That’s not surprising.

I would never condone violence against anyone but I also don’t believe an MP who doesn’t take their responsibility to their constituents seriously and empathetically is putting themselves in line to have to deal with tension directly. These are peoples lives they hold responsibility for.

It’s interesting that you feel people should be reserved in their reactions to decisions made out of their control. Your expectations may be too high as they show a real lack of understanding of human behaviour.

Its an absolute joke.

Meanwhile 30 million pounds are being spent in my local area building an underpass.

CeramicGuineaPig · 22/10/2020 09:59

Who are the 5 tories that defied the whip? They should be named and applauded!

One is Harlow's MP Robert Halfon.

What decent person can vote against feeding hungry children?! These people make me sick

InsanityRocks · 22/10/2020 10:01

I don't understand what it will take for people to realise the tories do not have the general publics best interests at heart. Even if there are good people in the Tory party the ideology is against looking after the vulnerable. On another thread people are still saying they're better than Labour or Corbyn, and yet it is socialism that has given this country the NHS and minimum wage and workers rights. There are so many lies pushed from the right wing media, from Russia and China whose interest lies in our democracy being de-stabilised and we are allowing ourselves to fall for it and squabble amongst ourselves(see thread about the north) It is utterly heartbreaking that there are children in this country that will go hungry when there is so much wealth here.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 22/10/2020 10:01

Wait, it’s just an opposition party motion - it would lead to nothing and they couldn’t easily vote against the party whip

DrCoconut · 22/10/2020 10:02

I don't even need to check. Mine will be on there.

IsabelleSE19 · 22/10/2020 10:06

If you can't use bile and vitriol against public servants who voted to keep hungry children hungry over Christmas, I don't know when you can.

My vacuous corrupt yes-woman of a useless MP is on the list. Inevitably.

Wtfdidwedo · 22/10/2020 10:06

Someone set up a petition to stop MPs claiming subsidised food. It's already been removed from the government petitions website, can't say I'm shocked!

foxychox · 22/10/2020 10:08

TBH I don't give a shit who voted yes or no, I want to help the families in need. Does anyone know the best way to do this, foodbank or is there a national charity coordinating a response?

MoonJelly · 22/10/2020 10:08

There were some right arseholes in that debate, including the one who felt it was justifiable to leave children hungry because some parents might be spending money on cigarettes, and the idiot who suggested that wanting children to have adequate food was "virtue signalling". Putting the whole discussion in the context of the billions the government has diverted to its mates for disastrous test and trace apps and it really is a very low point for them.

MoonJelly · 22/10/2020 10:10

If a reasonable body of them - or even all of them - had had the courage to tell the whips to fuck off, I can't seriously see any attempt to sack them for wanting children to have adequate food. But maybe Cummings and Johnson really are that stupid.
poorbuthappy · 22/10/2020 10:11

What doesn't sit right with me (apart from the whole thing obv) is that Welsh MPs (1 of which is my MP) gets to vote on denying English kids free school meals whilst the devolved Welsh Assembly have already agreed to it.
Everything about government is a total shit storm.

WaterAndTheWild · 22/10/2020 10:13

Mine's there - Helen Whately - absolute scum.

RightOnTheEdge · 22/10/2020 10:14

It is no surprise at all that my MP Kevin Hollinrake is on that list while he is the MP who claimed the highest expenses.
£83,000 he claimed in expenses last year yet voted against giving poor children free meal Angry

His voting record always makes me feel sick though. Constantly voting against equality and human rights, against legalising gay marriage and higher payments for people too ill or disabled to work Sad

The thing is though have you looked through the comments under news articles about this? Most people seem to agree with not giving children fsm in holidays.
The comments are hateful.
It's only here I've seen much support for it.

janetmendoza · 22/10/2020 10:16

My conservative mp James Duddridge abstained which is a minor miracle - so I have to say a begrudding good for him I suppose.

Happyhusband · 22/10/2020 10:17

Giles Watling. And to think his one big role was in a working class sitcom .

Greysparkles · 22/10/2020 10:19

I hope you can all see this picture.
If basildon can do it, why can't others.
Shameful

To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?
Janus · 22/10/2020 10:21

My awful Tory MP voted for no free school meals in the holidays, no surprise. I’ve emailed him to ask why.
Can anyone tell us the names of the 5 Tory MP’s who voted in favour? I’d love to know who they are as my respect for them would go up a bit.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 22/10/2020 10:22

MoonJelly I agree with you, but remember how dangerous the tories think labour are to the country Hmm so supporting their motion - endorsing them - feels risky to them

poorbuthappy · 22/10/2020 10:22

If you click on the link there's a tab near the top of the page which tells you the "ayes"
GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/10/2020 10:22

'Do you think children should have access to free meals?'

Free school meals in lockdown was done for a reason, those kids would normally be in school so of course the costs should be covered.

Having said that I do think that in this pandemic while employment, furlough etc is all over the place then Government should stump up for the next 6 months just while we have ongoing Tier situations going on and peoole don't have a reliable income.

The online hate mob dressing it up as 'ToryScum want kids to STARVE!!!!' Is all just hyperbolic bollocks.
