To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

I don't even need to check. My Tory MP explained to me a couple of years ago that I'm only anti-hunting because I don't understand it. I'd I'd grown up doing it, I'd understand it's a noble British tradition apparently. He's so out of touch, it's almost funny. He votes with the party on everything.

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 09:41

My previous tory mp was half decent so he defected to the Lib dems when he realised how bad the tories were getting. Been replaced by your usual immoral current tory who voted No of course

StuckInTheMiddleWithTwo · 22/10/2020 09:42

Feeling very smug- mine voted yes (and generally I'm pleased with her voting history too). She is a labour MP though.

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 22/10/2020 09:43

Mine voted against.
He might regret that- his constituency includes some very deprived areas. Although we've been blue for decades, propped up by the affluent area, so I doubt it.

SeekingAnswers3 · 22/10/2020 09:44

Looking at all faces that votes against has actually made my heart hurt.

How do these people get into Government? Why do we let them?

FatimaMunchy · 22/10/2020 09:44

Mine was a teller for the Noes. Presumably he didn't vote.

W3dontdoduvets · 22/10/2020 09:44

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'Witch-hunt or accountability?'

No, it isnt 'accountability'. Twitter is full of 'ToryScum' vile comments, the bile and vitriol online is shocking. Disagree, challenge yes. Just without the pitchforks. I read that many MPs have panic buttons in their homes. So yes, how they vote should be anonymous imo.

Covid has really brought out the pack mentality in some people.

You are the only one with the pitchfork on here, dear.

If they voted humanely, there wouldn’t be an outcry? You see?

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2020 09:44

I’m so angry about this, just when you think they can’t sink any lower. It’s the deserving and non-deserving poor argument all over again, except this time it’s children being punished.

WhySoSensitive · 22/10/2020 09:47

Mines on there. Actually a bit surprised considering some of the other stances he’s had on some local issues.

ilovesooty · 22/10/2020 09:47

They were whipped. 5 Tory MPs defied the whip.

annonymousse · 22/10/2020 09:48

I'm shocked to see my mp voted no. We live in a very deprived area. Thought he would be voting yes for sure

SilverDragonfly1 · 22/10/2020 09:49

Thank you for drawing my attention to this WrongKindOfFace (which I'm sure you don't have btw). Of course my MP voted against and he is a cabinet member which somehow makes me even angrier. Have written him a stiff message- his voting on Welfare issues in general is disgraceful. This isn't the first time he's heard from me about these things... Not that it seems to make a scrap of difference.

InsanityRocks · 22/10/2020 09:49

GetOffYourHighHorse Do you think children should have access to free meals?

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 22/10/2020 09:49

No, it isnt 'accountability'. Twitter is full of 'ToryScum' vile comments, the bile and vitriol online is shocking. Disagree, challenge yes. Just without the pitchforks. I read that many MPs have panic buttons in their homes. So yes, how they vote should be anonymous imo

You see, to break it down simply: If I know an MP who is standing for reelection is voting in a way I find morally unacceptable, I will not vote for them.
They CHOOSE to be MPs, and that makes them a target for nut jobs- unfortunately and wrongly, yes. But that doesn't mean that the process should not be transparent, otherwise we may as well not choose our own MPs, as we'd not have a clue about them.

StopGo · 22/10/2020 09:51

My Lib-Dem MP abstained despite claiming to want the best for the children of his constituency.

Chaotica · 22/10/2020 09:51

I'm furious about this.

The 'deserving' and 'undeserving' poor argument doesn't even work anyway. Many of the children I know locally who are on free school meals are the children of the 'key workers' who the Tories were applauding a few months ago. Not only are the parents risking their lives as care-workers, working in covid-unsafe food distribution centres, or in lowly jobs in the NHS, but now their children are meant to go without over the holidays.

(I should point out here, I don't agree with the 'deserving and undeserving poor' argument, I just think it's a shit argument and doesn't work anyway.)

Cornettoninja · 22/10/2020 09:52

How do these people get into Government? Why do we let them

There’s no passive ‘letting’ going on, it’s us that actively chose them.

I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that I live in a country where my political view points are out of kilter with the majority. I have to accept that if that’s what the outcome of a vote is.

However, I do take an interest in how many people don’t vote and will always state how important it is that people do vote when they talk about things like this being abhorrent. It’s not much power but it’s there to be used.

callmeadoctor · 22/10/2020 09:52

Who are the 5 tories that defied the whip? They should be named and applauded!

jessstan1 · 22/10/2020 09:53

My MP is not amongst them; I didn't think he would be, he's a good man.

I don't know what is the matter with these people, frankly.

Why can the government not just allocate a little bit of our (considerable) tax contribution to free school meals for every child. They'd still have plenty of money left to pay silly buggers.

boredboredboredboredbored · 22/10/2020 09:54

Pleb gate Andrew Mitchell whi is Mike also voted No....what a cunt

ConfusedcomMum · 22/10/2020 09:54

Didn't they recently give themselves a 10k pay rise or something? Disgraceful really.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/10/2020 09:55

With a small number if exceptions there seems to ve a particular majority demographic...or is it just me

TheKeatingFive · 22/10/2020 09:56

Dicks

Wtfdidwedo · 22/10/2020 09:56

Our political system is just fucking ridiculous. You don't even really need to look at most votes to know 95% of Tories voted one way and 95% of Labour voted the opposite way. What's the point of electing MPs to "represent us" in parliament. They don't. They just vote the way the party is expected to vote.

Minesril · 22/10/2020 09:56

These are the tories who voted aye.

My Tory MP isn't one of them, but hardly to be expected. The scumbag voted for the bedroom tax and against the mansion tax, so...
