Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

My local MP voted no. But then I already knew.he would because he very rarely votes against his Tory party!

Our local Tory MP never votes against the Tory party. She is being absolutely slated on social media right now, and rightly so. She is a disgrace. I hope that those who voted for her are ashamed of themselves.

TreadLightly3 · 23/10/2020 20:21

@WrongKindOfFace thank you - I have written to mine to express my outrage

PodgeBod · 23/10/2020 20:29

My MP didn't bother to vote. But she has retweeted our councils offer of "help". They are going to offer a half term sports club scheme (with a meal) for 1000 children of working parents in the whole county. Not sure how many kids will be able to take this up since we broke up today Confused and parents will have already taken time off or arranged childcare. And food banks can apply for grants so they don't go short over the half term. Again, we have already broken up for half term so I can't see any way the charities will get that money in time to help children. But all the local Conservative MPs are being very smug and patting themselves on the back about it.

@Greysparkles

I hope you can all see this picture. If basildon can do it, why can't others. Shameful
I thought Mark Francois was in hiding?
Peregrina · 23/10/2020 21:14

Yes I agree that charity gets the Tories off the hook, but as a short term measure it's what we need to do. Long term we need to remind people just how your MP does vote, and whether they do represent their constituents or not.

AhFiddledeedee · 23/10/2020 21:29

@Mumoftwoyoungkids

My (Tory) MP isn’t on there! Does that mean he defied the government and voted for it??

I am actually quite surprised (I always thought he was a bit of a dick) and strangely proud!

If you have a look on the votes for aye, they may be on there. Or abstained.

My MP was one of few that defied the party.

Ginfordinner · 23/10/2020 21:32

I have just read that all councils in South Yorkshire have, this afternoon, agreed that they will fund the vouchers themselves.

knickybricks · 23/10/2020 21:39

Tory Staff Manual - how to fix feckless parents...punish the kids, let them go hungry, that'll lead to better parenting! Hmm

They condemned a generation to the dole in the 80s because it was deemed cheaper than trying to keep them in a job and ever since have bemoaned the social security bill and the product of a generation condemned to benefits (who had kids who then had kids of their own).

They never think cause and effect. Same with getting rid of 20,000 police officers.

MuthaFunka61 · 23/10/2020 23:30

@annabel85.
I think the Tories are well aware of cause and effect and rely on the general public to have rubbish memories,which seems to be working.

OnceUponAnEnzyme · 24/10/2020 07:46

One MP explains his reasons - in response to a letter from a 16 year old girl who he insults and patronises.

To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?
TheKeatingFive · 24/10/2020 07:52

God what an insufferable dick.

I take the old fashioned view that MPs should take responsibility for making their own sandwiches, rather than enjoying subsidised canteen food at the tax payers expense.

ShebaShimmyShake · 24/10/2020 08:07

How rude, openly contemptuous and totally unstatesmanlike.

FatimaMunchy · 24/10/2020 08:09

Wow. That letter is rude.

SerendipityJane · 24/10/2020 08:28

@FatimaMunchy

Wow. That letter is rude.
That letter is what you get from years of voting for rosettes rather than people, I'm afraid. As a society it's pretty much what we deserve.

I can't see Philip Davies or Ben Bradley going anywhere anytime soon.

I have history with PD, as I got a "go fuck yourself reply" from him nearly 10 years ago, when he said the disabled should obviously be paid less because they are worth less. He was probably re-elected with an increased majority after that.

The real story here is how people grumble when they get what they wanted. Because if the level of support for Marcus Rashford is indicative of the country as a whole, then a lot of people claiming to support him voted for this in the first place.

and for the Tories ...

knickybricks · 24/10/2020 08:34

Shocked by that letter!

SerendipityJane · 24/10/2020 08:40

@knickybricks

Shocked by that letter!
Why ? Tory MP shows they are scum. Weather to follow.
Nissandriver · 24/10/2020 08:46

What a disgrace! My MP is there. Vote these disgraces out!!!

FatimaMunchy · 24/10/2020 09:17

Serendipity Jane Shock
My MP is also died in the wool Tory, but I can't imagine him being so rude ( and no I didn't vote for him).

LilacCandle · 24/10/2020 09:28

At the age of 31 BJ described the children of single mothers as "ill raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate" so no surprise he wouldnt care if they were hungry. I'm a single mum as dh died. My parents happily vote for a man who described my children like that and are big fans of the newspaper he wrote it for. Hmm

TheKeatingFive · 24/10/2020 09:41

People shouldn’t be shocked. This is typical of a certain breed of Tory. And this prick clearly has form.

But that letter should be shared as widely as possible.

Ginfordinner · 24/10/2020 09:44

Our MP has deleted and blocked people who have challenged her on social media Angry

Moutarde · 24/10/2020 09:56

My MP voted against I'm glad to say.

So, what have all of you done about your MPs who voted for?

If your answer is just 'moaned on mumsnet' perhaps consider emailing them to express your feelings and mentioning that you'll not be voting for them in the next election.

The more people do this, the more they will actually take note.

RickOShay · 24/10/2020 10:02

This is the email I sent to my MP

To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?
RickOShay · 24/10/2020 10:06

And this is the next one
