To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

Self-serving Tory scum.

ThePittts · 22/10/2020 12:02

My MP voted for and now has resigned.(not sure if she has completely resigned as an MP)
tbh she has been pretty quiet since she got in this time, whereas before she was quite vocal, perhaps she is coming back !

mrshoho · 22/10/2020 12:03

www.mpsexpenses.info/#!/mp/11

You can search your MP on this site. IPSA also publish the figures in detail.

My MP claimed £41000 in a 12 month period. This did not include staff or travel costs. He represents Harrow which is less than 20 miles from Westminster. Why would he need a second home? I do think MPs who represent a constituency should also live there.

bodgeitandscarper · 22/10/2020 12:03

My mp has been posting photos of his large dinners while eating out to help out. I feel sickened that he has voted not to help hungry kids, I do think it should be just be offered during term time though.

Teawhite1 · 22/10/2020 12:04

Disgusted with the lot of them. Thought this quote from Marcus Rashford was really powerful:

'These children matter...and for as long as they don't have a voice, they will have mine...'

His Mum must be so proud of him.

Rapunzathepenguin · 22/10/2020 12:06

@ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes But until VERY recently they could spend those staffing allowances on employing close family members: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39282279

And MPs' declared expenses are available at www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/your-mp/

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/10/2020 12:07

Unfortunately giving asda vouchers ... isn't going to stop neglect, the parent can spend them on anything but alcohol or tobacco in fact

I can't speak for others, but at our local Asda plenty are using them for alcohol and tobacco because the abuse of staff who've refused has just got too much - and of course in areas where the money's paid direct into an account there can be no effective restrictions at all

NeonGenesis · 22/10/2020 12:07

This really takes the piss. I think a lot of issues can get complicated and thus you end up with many shades of grey... always a possibly legitimate reason why someone didn't want to vote a certain way... but this feels different. You are talking about giving a hot meal to an impoverished child. How the fuck can anyone justify saying no to that? In government terms, relatively speaking, it costs fuck all.

Absolutely disgraceful.

If your MPO is Caroline Ansell, she deserves a special mention for voting with her heart and not blind party dogma.

She hasn't resigned as an MP, just from her extra job as a PPS. These are the jobs they give to people who might be heading for more senior roles so she has scuppered her chances for one of the top jobs (at least in the short term).

I have never voted Tory, but I take my hat off to her on this issue.

I don't regard this as a good argument not to provide help for anyone.
CoronaBollox · 22/10/2020 12:12

Always the same. "Not enough money for everything freeeeeeee"

We should treat schools like certain job/roles are treated. Allow a certain amount of money to cover things like school meals all year round, a perk of being a school child, the next generation who are going to have to clean up this shitshow of a government, I suppose you could call it expenses...

Gosh, that should be the motto of the House of Commons.

Neither do I, but if it's going to help genuinely needy, possibly neglected children, there's got to be a better way of handling it than handing out money with hardly any restrictions

And yes, that should also apply to MPs meals, government contracts for corrupt cronies and all the rest

missmoz · 22/10/2020 12:15

Cheered to see people in Tory seats holding their MPs to account. I hope they're punished for it at the next election, it's indefensible

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 22/10/2020 12:15

Rapunzathepenguin thanks for that link.

I can’t see any personal expenses for any of them though, even looked up BJ! Where can you find them?

RitaMills · 22/10/2020 12:16

This is so sad and absolutely infuriating!

Luckily I’m in Scotland and my council has provided a hands on hungry service for children throughout all school holidays for a couple of years now. Through my job I regularly visit schools and these hands on hungry holiday clubs so see first hand what an absolute life line they are to these children.... to vote no is totally shameful!

Unfortunately they weigh the votes here and most of his supporters would wholeheartedly endorse his vote. They don’t have much sympathy for poverty and deprivation round here.
TeddyIsaHe · 22/10/2020 12:22

You know you’ve fucked it when even Farage is against it.

To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?
Norugratsatall · 22/10/2020 12:23

Knew my useless MP would be there before I even looked and yep... she was! 😡

OnceUponAnEnzyme · 22/10/2020 12:24

Always the same. "Not enough money for everything freeeeeeee"

Indeed. And meals are not free - they are paid for through tax. As the tax comes from us, we should have a say in how it is spent.

I struggle to understand any pov that considers it better to spend £12bn on a test/trace system that is less effective than a sniffer dog, than on feeding hungry, vulnerable children.

hiredandsqueak · 22/10/2020 12:30

Well I knew mine would be on there he's a pompous twat so didn't expect anything else. Will comment on his Facebook page if he hasn't taken it down again.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/10/2020 12:31

'You know you’ve fucked it when even Farage is against it.'

I dont think his opinion has ever been relevant has it?

'You are talking about giving a hot meal to an impoverished child. How the fuck can anyone justify saying no to that? '

These 'impoverished child's' parents still receive the myriad of welfare benefits they always have. Nothing has changed there.

However those on minimum wages who now are living on reduced wages due to local restrictions should have specific extra food allowances for children. Local councils are in the best position to facilitate that. Like restrictions, it should be targeted.

Laiste · 22/10/2020 12:32

When are we going to get a steady electable alternative to the bloody conservatives?

Why, when it comes round to election time, does the main opposition always seem to be in turmoil or being lead by someone who turns voters right off?

Why does it seem so hard to provide an alternative to this tory shit show!?

So many people don't want the torys in but refuse to vote at all because they can't see a viable opposition. It's unbelievable and so frustrating.

Ori3 · 22/10/2020 12:32

This is what the Tories are. Every now and then the mask slips and you see them in all their glory.

This is why no-one who is not a fully-paid up idiot should ever vote them into power.

QueenofmyPrinces · 22/10/2020 12:33

Mine voted no too Sad
