To not know how to fix the toilet asap??!

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 18:33

About 3 hours ago my toilet started sounding like it was going to take off. It has very rarely flushed properly since day one but I've put up with it (and moving out soon!). Last Sunday noticed it growling when the neighbour was running water.

The loud on-going noise continued and now the toilet is blocked. I used 4 kettles to fill it and it almost over flowed.

Next I scooped out all the water (boke) and had a good go at it with a large plunger and mop (mop seemed moet powerful) but the problem remains. The water goes down some but not much.

Help what can I do?

Not sure if @PigletJohn can help.

Sorry I have no idea myself, hope you manage to sort it though Smile.

PragmaticWench · 21/10/2020 18:37

Have you lifted the top off to see if everything looks right in the cistern?

DramaAlpaca · 21/10/2020 18:37

Tip a couple of full buckets of water down it from a height. If there's a blockage the force of the water should push it through.

NoSquirrels · 21/10/2020 18:40

So there’s a noise coming from it when no one is using it/hasn’t been flushed?

And it’s blocked?

It’s not the flush, it’s that there’s a blockage in the pipes?

Have you checked your drains outside?

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 18:44

It is getting louder! Havent checked the drains outside, check them how? It is pitch black now anyway.

The cistern i dont have a clue, mine doesn't look like most of the youtube videos. When I flush it goes down then refills.

So much for relaxing with pilates class tonight urg....

Not original advice, OP, but I'd be calling a plumber in.

NoSquirrels · 21/10/2020 18:50

The noise is from your pipes, yes? Not to do with the water going into the toilet if no one is using it. Because you could turn off the water to the toilet to isolate it.

Is it your house or do you rent? You need a plumber.

BakedTattie · 21/10/2020 18:50

Looks like a job for dynorod

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 18:50

I'd be calling someone after asking next door if they're experiencing any issues.

When there were issues on my parents street, the neighbours paid between them for things to be sorted because it wasn't always obvious who was and wasn't responsible.

NoSquirrels · 21/10/2020 18:52

Call your landlord!

Sounds like the drains are backed up.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 21/10/2020 18:53

Can you not call landlord if you rent? That would be the normal response? And they can get someone out.
Do they knows it’s been having problems for ages?

I'd say the first thing to is to check inside your manhole (fnarr, fnarr) to see if the blockage is right down the drains. The drain will be full of water if the blockage is further along the system.

If so, it probably needs rodding out. If you can borrow a set of drain rods from anyone you know, it's not that difficult and it's strangely satisfying. Failing that, it's a job for a professional, I think.

If the drain is pretty dry, then the blockage is beyween the bog itself and the drain. If it's in the u-bend or just beyond, white vinegar and baking soda will sometimes create enough of a strong reaction to break up a blockage to the point where it will flush. A bent out of shape wire coat hanger can be used to break the blockage up a bit first.

If it's further along, it's probably a job for a plumber, I'm afraid.

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 18:57

The letting agency will be closed now. I can send an email indicating an emergency - wanted to see if I could fix myself first!

Well the water in the bath is yellow and stinks. If you've got nothing useful to say dont bother commenting. I obviously am not an expert and just describing what I see and hear.

On second thoughts hmmmm...

Thisisnotnormal69 · 21/10/2020 18:58

That was meant to add -can you post some photos of the cistern?

LakieLady · 21/10/2020 19:00

@Maria53

Omg the bath is filling with piss!
It won't be piss, just dirty water! Baths and bogs don't share wastepipes.

It sounds like the drain might be fucked further down the line. It might be worth asking if your neighbours are experiencing problems and, if they are, it could well be a blockage in the sewer under the road and a job for the water company.

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 19:02

The bath and the toilet! Sorry...ill get one of cistern in a sec.

You'll think this is unhelpful, and it probably is, but you should have done something about this on Monday. Now you are stuck with an issue that you have neglected because you thought "oh well, hopefully I'll get away with it as I'm moving out soon". Your landlord/letting agent would have been obliged to do something if you'd acted more responsibly. As a tenant you should let the people who manage the property know about a serious problem like this.

This doesn't mean I am unsympathetic to tenants (far from it if you search my posting history on Mumsnet) but being a tenant doesn't mean you can pretend issues in your rental aren't happening.
