To not know how to fix the toilet asap??!

About 3 hours ago my toilet started sounding like it was going to take off. It has very rarely flushed properly since day one but I've put up with it (and moving out soon!). Last Sunday noticed it growling when the neighbour was running water.

The loud on-going noise continued and now the toilet is blocked. I used 4 kettles to fill it and it almost over flowed.

Next I scooped out all the water (boke) and had a good go at it with a large plunger and mop (mop seemed moet powerful) but the problem remains. The water goes down some but not much.

Help what can I do?

When my drains blocked it was baby/bum wipes that got caught at the junction where my drain met the main one

I was eally pissed off as we are a reusable household, nappies wipes and ST's so no disposable stuff flushed here.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 21/10/2020 21:05

If the flush is actually running continually you need to switch off the isolation valve- a small lever valve or one you could turn with a screwdriver, on the pipe that supplies water to the cistern. Off is the position where the lever or screwdriver slot is at right angles to the pipe.

I really would strongly advise you to speak to your neighbours.

If you share a downpipe and they put on the washing machine etc it will pump out in your flat.

Also all 3 of you may well have called plumbers for the same blockage

fairydustandpixies · 21/10/2020 21:07

Did you watch 'Des' OP?! 🤣

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 21:35

Nah haven't seen Des yet. Is he a murderous plumber?

I am properly knackered. No sign yet. Starting to wonder if they are going to bother tonight after all.

Can you ring them again?

Pembsgirl · 21/10/2020 21:45

Lol, loved Des, yeh, perhaps it's body parts bunging up the pipes!! Do let us know what they find OP.

Maria53 · 21/10/2020 21:46

He came with a fancy looking plunger and that didnt work. He said he thinks a part might be needed and is coming back first thing.

He switched off the water so the noise has stopped. At least I'll be able to sleep.

Now don't want to use the toilet...!

Also not sure what the rules are but the guy showed up without a mask, gloves or anything. Would have thought some ppe would be used?

I'd be VERY concerned that he turned up without a mask or any PPE. Has he come back this morning?

AriettyHomily · 22/10/2020 10:07

This happened to us and the neighbours drain was blocking the junction with condoms and beer bottle tops. The mind boggles.

Mumdiva99 · 22/10/2020 10:13

Wait a minute.....that is obviously blocked drains. Why has he switched off the water and not rodded the drains?
@Maria53 is it fixed yet this morning?

sadonfriday · 22/10/2020 10:41

I think the soil stack is blocked but is likely shared as flats

Felifox · 22/10/2020 11:24

OP As others say your soil or stack pipe could be joined into a shared pipe so anything flushed is coming back up. If you haven't got any heavy duty rubber gloves or bleach you'll need them as part of your deep clean for your flat, door handles, light switches etc that you might have touched.
Don't hesitate to contact the local water company to enquire about shared drains or the Environmental Health Officer at your local authority for advice re infection control.

We had a problem last year on shared drains, which involved 10 days work, clearing and cleaning, digging up pipes under a house and putting a manhole cover in. The overflow was coming up outside my ndn's back door, 3 days to pump and jet wash to prevent it going indoors alone. It stinks!

I am pleased to report I can use my toilet once again. Though it is still slightly dodgy.

The plumber told me it was installed incorrectly to begin with, a proper cowboy style job. He said the floor is rotting underneath as well, yuck. He had to rip it out and install new parts.

Anyway I'll be moving into my new place in a month or so. Fingers crossed it holds out until then!

The second plumber who came did use ppe throughout. Gloves and mask.
