Have discovered this fab ironing lady just down the road from me but DH keeps moaning that i'm sending it out all the time. Its just such a relief to bung it in a bag and have it all come back nicely pressed. Am a SAHM so should i be making time to do it myself?

no dont iron pants, socks, towels, or tea towels. kids uniforms, 3 lots of these plus change of clothes when they come home from school, then u got the weekends,,, thats without me and bf

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 09:52

I make absolutely sure I buy the uniforms that don't need ironing

and quite often dd stays in uniform when she gets home - if not the same outfit will do for more than a day or two cos she's only wearing it for a short time

don't iron jeans

in winter don't iron t shirts really cos they are underneath stuff

if I use the tumble dryer I get things out the minute they are dry and then fold them so they don't get creased

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 09:53

dd2's clothes are little, I'll give you that

but she wears a hell of a lot of them

chacha3 · 14/10/2007 09:57

mmmm some good tips there thanks...hate ironing

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 10:10

M&S do loads of non-iron uniform stuff

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 10:13

the getting things out of the tumble dryer is fab tho

I actually read about it in an interview with Kirstie off Location Location Location

SmileysPeeples · 14/10/2007 10:14

My Mum does my ironing.

BUT if I didn't have my wonderful Mum to put upon, I think paying someone to do a job for you to give yourself time to do other things is perfectly reasonable. You are buying time with your DD, you are paying for the stress of am additional job to be removed from your life.

If you can afford it, it seems a good use of money to me.

Better then putting uopm your old Mum. She likes it though, honestly!!!

lucyellensmum · 14/10/2007 10:15

now you see, capposcreamo makes a very good point there - ironing lady or wine?? ironing lady or chocolate? or book (if only had time to read one!!!) - puts it in a whole new light . The answer is simple, wear creased clothes.

I'd have a cleaner if i could afford it, but that would mean i would actually have to keep my house TIDY as well - i'm just not very good at the domestic stuff, im a good mum though - and im fantastic in bed!!!!

MadamePlatypus · 14/10/2007 16:05

Thats exactly right lucyellensmum. On the weeks when I do iron DH's shirts, I am doing it to pocket the money and buy a coffee and a rocky road chocolate cake in Starbucks.

MadamePlatypus · 14/10/2007 16:07

Also agree with you on the cleaner thing. We had a cleaner for a few weeks after DD was born. However we gave up on it because had to vacate the house while she was there (quite small house) for her to get anything done, and then spent the whole week trying to find things that had been chucked in the cupboard under the stairs on the night before cleaning day.

FlightAttendant · 14/10/2007 16:10

I used to do a friend's ironing - actually she was my mum's friend. She commuted two days a week and her kids (2 of them) were at school. But she was sooo busy.
I didn't mind, it was good for me and she had more time to do other stuff!
I never iron my own stuff though

motherinferior · 14/10/2007 16:36

I'd far, far rather pay than iron. Oh god yes.

Rosa · 14/10/2007 16:48

Can you send mine as well please ???

Anna8888 · 14/10/2007 19:34

I have someone who comes in to iron/clean but the priority is definitely ironing. I hate ironing. So boring. Only ever do it myself in extremis.

Unless you really can't afford it, pay someone to do the jobs you hate.

elliemac · 14/10/2007 19:48

What do you think about a cleaner? I'd love one but i think i'd be one of those women who clean before the cleaner comes!!

Anna8888 · 14/10/2007 19:51

Cleaners are fab if they are any good but I always tidy up before they come round as I don't like other people putting my things away (they always get it wrong).

Someone to dust, wash floors, clean loos and bathrooms and blitz the kitchen once a week is lovely.

elliemac · 14/10/2007 19:53

I don't think i could trust one. I know if it was me my nose would get the better of me and i'd go poking about! Not at any personal stuff tho - just photos and things like that

olala · 14/10/2007 19:53

cleaners have chanegd my life! get one if you can. Some cleaners will celan a house from top to bottom in 4 hours and charge you only £6 an hour. Its so worth it!

elliemac · 14/10/2007 19:58

I don't mind cleaning really just the ironing! I love it when i get a few hours to myself and i just go for it. I love sitting down with a coffee admiring my handywork. This doesn't happen too often mind - only when DD is off shopping with her nan!

ChantillyLace · 14/10/2007 20:59

What's ironing?????

incogneato · 14/10/2007 21:01

of course it's OK
no-one else's business tbh.
the first thing I am going to do when I get a job is hire a cleaner.

ScottishMummy · 14/10/2007 21:04

Take a long term view - how much are you spending on ironing a year? Even five shirts a week is £5.00, so approx £260 a year. Would this money be better spent on something else? Fun, serious or whatever.
