That clocks should not go back in winter

This weekend the clocks go back. Something I object to and would like to see end, at least in England.

Three arguments for doing so used to be made

  • dark mornings in Scotland- fair point, now there is a Scottish Parliament and they can decide, there are enough places with two time zones.
  • Farming- less people affected now with more mechanisation
  • Guy Fawkes Night- I cannot see how one day a year starting with the few celebrations a bit later is an issue.

Since mines, shipyards and factories closed, fewer people start work early, whereas longer retail hours mean more working in the evening. If wfh at least some of the week continues post Covid 19, the numbers going out in the dark mornings will be fewer than before.

I agree. I hate the clocks going back

Sunsetdawn · 19/10/2020 09:23

I think you are being unreasonable, because winter time is gmt. Daylight saving in summer was the original change, I believe originating in Europe in the late 19th century.
It's already pitch black at 7am. Kids would be walking to school in the near dark at the beginning of the January term if the clocks didn't change. And teenagers aren't renowned for being at their brightest and best first thing in the morning.

RhapsodyandAshe · 19/10/2020 09:26

YANBU. I am half convinced that the only reason it is still a thing is to keep us plebs disconcerted and reeling.

Lockheart · 19/10/2020 09:26

No thanks, I want the lighter mornings back. I don't mind dark evenings.

LonelyFromCorona · 19/10/2020 09:27

Yep would happily stay on BST all year round.

hopefulhalf · 19/10/2020 09:34

My DC leave for school at 7am. OP try getting up at 5:30 for a month then tell me the clocks don't need to change in October. BTW the European Union have stopped changing their clocks completely as it not good for physical or mental health. If we need to stick to one then I vote GMT.

WhatzTheCraic · 19/10/2020 09:35

Totally agree. Always dread the clocks going back.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 19/10/2020 09:36

They should go back and stay back.

twoshedsjackson · 19/10/2020 09:36

I'm old enough to remember the last time they tried this - late 60's? and it was awful for morning starts.
I was only in the Midlands, but I still remember struggling into school in the dark; in Scotland, it could be dark until 10 o'clock.
But I'm quite badly affected by lack of daylight; not full-blown SADS, but it's noticeable.

CrunchyNutNC · 19/10/2020 09:37

YABU

And as for this just applying to England - last thing we need now is two time zones in the UK to contend with on top of everything else. And what about NI and Wales?

I don't see the problem with changing by 1 hour frankly, it's not difficult.

MoonJelly · 19/10/2020 09:39

YANBU. I'm ancient enough to have vague memories of the experiment with keeping to BST all year round, and at the time I thought it was great and was sorry when they abandoned it. Changing the clocks has no effect on the amount of light we actually get, and there is evidence that it causes health problems because of the disruption to natural rhythms.

movingonup20 · 19/10/2020 09:40

I and then subsequently my children left for secondary school at 7.30am. Without the hour change it would have meant walking 30 mins in the dark for months on end. Most secondary schools here start by 8.30, some by 8am so it's a common problem. Not everyone lives in London remember it's already darker up here!

FelicityPike · 19/10/2020 09:41

Eh we’ve had our own Parliament since 1999!
Do you honestly think if The UK Parliament wanted to allow us to change, we wouldn’t have by now?

Givemeabreak88 · 19/10/2020 09:42

I must be on my own but I love the clocks going back so YABU

MoonJelly · 19/10/2020 09:43

Children in Scotland manage to cope with going to school in the dark because even with the change in the clocks for a time it is dark until 9. You also have to factor in the increasing incidence of after school activities which means they go home in the dark.

But if that's a genuine problem, why not just stick with GMT?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/10/2020 09:43

As others have said we'll be going back to normal time this weekend. It's the summer change that is the adjustment.

And farmers....

savetti · 19/10/2020 09:43

The dark mornings are making me really miserable this year. You’ve actually just cheered me up reminding me that clocks are going back

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 19/10/2020 09:44

The change is to summertime.

Si we are going back to " pro

looseddaughter · 19/10/2020 09:44

YABVU. I hate the dark mornings -such a horrible start to the day. Dark evenings - fine, draw the curtains and get cosy. We need light in the mornings to get going. I'm in the midlands and set off at 7.30 and it does make a difference. I hate the bit in MArch when the clocks go forward and it's light at 7pm but freezing cold and grey and you want to draw the curtains but you can't because it's light.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 19/10/2020 09:44

.. to "proper" time in autumn.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 19/10/2020 09:45

It's been said.
Sorry.

Whenwillow · 19/10/2020 09:48

I love it when the clocks go back. Brighter in the morning, cosy in the evening. I look forward to it throughout October.
I too think that if we're to stop changing the clocks, it should be to GMT (winter time) all year round.

Redcups64 · 19/10/2020 09:51

I don’t fancy the idea of kids walking to school in the dark. The clocks should go back, that’s the original time, if anything should be abandoned it’s the clocks going forward as that was the original change

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 19/10/2020 09:51

You haven’t given any reason why the clocks shouldn’t go back.

I don’t understand the problem. I love the extra hour in bed!

Time2change2 · 19/10/2020 09:55

You wouldn’t think like that if you had an 11 year old daughter walking to get the bus at 7:10 every morning in the pitch black on her own.
Thank god there is only a week until they change back
