That clocks should not go back in winter

This weekend the clocks go back. Something I object to and would like to see end, at least in England.

Three arguments for doing so used to be made

  • dark mornings in Scotland- fair point, now there is a Scottish Parliament and they can decide, there are enough places with two time zones.
  • Farming- less people affected now with more mechanisation
  • Guy Fawkes Night- I cannot see how one day a year starting with the few celebrations a bit later is an issue.

Since mines, shipyards and factories closed, fewer people start work early, whereas longer retail hours mean more working in the evening. If wfh at least some of the week continues post Covid 19, the numbers going out in the dark mornings will be fewer than before.

I hate the clocks going back. I have SAD. Perhaps we should be on different time zones - Scotland in one, England in the other. Would it be so difficult really in this day and age?

Wakemeuuuup · 19/10/2020 10:54

YANBU. I really hate the clock going back. It's dark when I get up anyway but I'd love an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon

murmurgam · 19/10/2020 10:55

SAD is related to length of daylight hours, clocks going back makes sod all difference!

frasersmummy · 19/10/2020 10:56

To those of you saying scotland can have its own timezone..

Do you really think thats practical given the amount of traffic that crosses the border every single hour of every single day

There are people who work on side of the border and live on the other

Its not just lighter mornings in Scotland its much colder before the sun comes up .. The difference between South England and even Glasgow is decidely noticeable !

DilysPrice · 19/10/2020 10:57

This is the ROSPA page, they’ve been campaigning for this for years.
www.rospa.com/road-safety/Advice/Roads/Clock-change
Unfortunately for them their own polling shows the same as the poll on this thread, that the British public are split right down the middle and there isn’t a convincing majority for change.

FWIW I think that lexiloo’s point about the evening rush hour being more spread out is an argument for keeping permanent BST - more spread out traffic means it travels faster and there’s more scope for collision and injury in poor light. Also children leaving school in the afternoon tend to be less well-disciplined than they are when travelling to school in the morning.

Dark evenings - fine, draw the curtains and get cosy

I dont want to get fucking cosy though, it's like waiting to die.

Roll on next spring.

deskthinker · 19/10/2020 11:02

I love when the clocks go back so I think it should stay as to meits a sign that winter is really coming which I love!

ktp100 · 19/10/2020 11:02

I love my extra hour in bed when it changes and dark mornings mean winter to me, which is my favourite season and it also means Christmas is coming so no complaints here.

Bbq1 · 19/10/2020 11:03

I love the clocks changing.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 19/10/2020 11:04

I can honestly say I've never even thought about it. Dont understand why it would be a problem.

Hollyhead · 19/10/2020 11:06

YANBU - it would enable children to have 1-2 hours playing in the light after school, much healthier.

I have to get up at 6am anyway so for much of the year it's dark at that time.

sashh · 19/10/2020 11:07

Is walking TO school in the dark any less dangerous than walking FROM school in the dark? because you can't magic up more daylight.

Yes. There have been studies.

Kids can be half asleep, as can drivers. After an overnight freeze people don't always defrost their car properly so may have limited views.

Mornings tend to be busy in general, people going to work and children going to school people walking dogs etc. People coming home from work are usually later than school children coming home from school.

RaspberryCoulis · 19/10/2020 11:08

I dont want to get fucking cosy though, it's like waiting to die.

It's the same every year. People who struggle with the lack of light are told that everything will be sorted if they just "snuggle under a blankie with a mug of hot choc and the famalam". It's twee nonsense.

I have a boiler, and radiators. I am not cold. I am not un-cosy. No amount of cosy, twee, shite is going to make it lighter, is it? And hot choc is fucking disgusting.

mellongoose · 19/10/2020 11:08

@Bbq1

I love the clocks changing.
Me too! I like the clocks changing both ways. Part of the rhythm of the year.

Agree with PP. NO to different time zones across the U.K. crazy!!

Bikingbear · 19/10/2020 11:11

How is it going to give children 1-2 hours in the light after school? Clocks only move an hour. Not to mention in the North and West it will still be dark almost as soon as they get home.

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2020 11:11

we used to have different time zones across the uk and it was the trains and timetable that eventually meant we all worked on the same time zone across the counties.

Why not just stick to GMT if you want to stay on why zone and not move

murmurgam · 19/10/2020 11:13

Btw, the EU decision has not been finalised. It's been voted to abolish clock changes but it doesn't look like it will happen from March 2021 as planned.

cologne4711 · 19/10/2020 11:13

As I understand it, the UK has opted into the EU changes around the clocks. I very much hope we stay on BST all year round, although it does mean incredibly dark mornings in the winter. GMT would mean darker evenings for much of the year.

I actually think we do need to put the clocks back in the winter, but they should go forward at the end of Feb, rather than making us wait for lighter evenings until the end of March.

Hollyhead · 19/10/2020 11:14

@bikingbear because when clocks first go back it get's dark at 5pm anyway (in the midlands) so it would be dark at 6pm, moving to 5 for the shortest day. So afterschool for early November would be light until 5/6 depending where you are, moving back to 4.30/5.30 by the shortest day.

Ohthatsgreat · 19/10/2020 11:14

Those saying keep GMT.... In the height of summer what would mean sunrise at 3.40am and sunset 8.40pm where I am. And the sun would rise even earlier further north. Personally would prefer an extra hour of daylight in the evening during summer than in the early hours

Hollyhead · 19/10/2020 11:15

@cologne4711 I like that February idea - much better :)

BreatheAndFocus · 19/10/2020 11:15

YABU- I’m looking forward to them going back as I hate the dark mornings (I’m in S England not Scotland).

Yes, it getting dark earlier is a bit annoying but the weather isn’t usually crap anyway so it’s not like you’re going to do anything. My DC are already finding it hard to wake up and get up with these dark mornings so I’m very much looking forward to the change.

BreatheAndFocus · 19/10/2020 11:15

Typo : IS usually crap not isn’t!

notimagain · 19/10/2020 11:16

*To those of you saying scotland can have its own timezone..

Not saying putting Scotland/England being in separate time zones is the best idea in the World but around the world plenty of people cope with daily commutes across time zones when crossing internal borders (e.g. USA , Oz, plenty of others)..

I'm sure the Brits could cope.....

BashfulClam · 19/10/2020 11:25

@borntobequiet

I think BST is unnecessary and would prefer to stay on GMT all year round. Why is it never made clear that the clocks change on the last Sunday in October and the last Sunday in March? No one I speak to seems to be aware of this, but it makes it so easy to remember.
This is how I remember the dates.
