That clocks should not go back in winter

nosswith · 19/10/2020 09:18

This weekend the clocks go back. Something I object to and would like to see end, at least in England.

Three arguments for doing so used to be made

  • dark mornings in Scotland- fair point, now there is a Scottish Parliament and they can decide, there are enough places with two time zones.
  • Farming- less people affected now with more mechanisation
  • Guy Fawkes Night- I cannot see how one day a year starting with the few celebrations a bit later is an issue.

Since mines, shipyards and factories closed, fewer people start work early, whereas longer retail hours mean more working in the evening. If wfh at least some of the week continues post Covid 19, the numbers going out in the dark mornings will be fewer than before.

I wouldn't mind them getting rid of the clock change - but only because I'm far enough North that it really makes no difference whether they change or not.

Spacie · 19/10/2020 10:20

Much as I hate the darker evenings I hate the dark mornings even more, so unless we can migrate the whole country closer to the equator, that's a no from me.

MusicMan65 · 19/10/2020 10:21

GMT all year would be the best option IMO, which would mean an end to BST. I wouldn't want to keep BST through the winter! But then I'm an early riser. BST isn't supported by any evidence and was a panic measure introduced in 1916 - the only reason for doing it then was because the Germans had just done the same. After a century it's about time for a review!

Aesopfable · 19/10/2020 10:22

Noon should be at midday.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 19/10/2020 10:25

I struggle with the lack of light through the winter. The very worst time of year is the end of October through to the solstice. After that, the light starts to come back - January is an amazing month.

Yep, that's me, too. I'm another who would be happy to stay on BST all year round, as I just cannot bear early darkness. Or, failing that, move somewhere near to the equator ...

JustCallMeGriffin · 19/10/2020 10:25

YABU lighter mornings are much better than lighter evenings.

Plus what's the point in GMT being 'zero' if it doesn't exist anymore.

I'd prefer that BST was removed.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2020 10:26

I remember when it was abandoned for a couple of years. It was generally deemed to be a bad idea. It's not that difficult to cope with an hour's change twice a year although the clock in my car often stays wrong for the whole 6 months.

oohyoudevilyou · 19/10/2020 10:28

Wish the clocks would go forward in a couple of weeks instead - by about 5 months. Bloody hate winter!

borntobequiet · 19/10/2020 10:30

I think BST is unnecessary and would prefer to stay on GMT all year round.
Why is it never made clear that the clocks change on the last Sunday in October and the last Sunday in March? No one I speak to seems to be aware of this, but it makes it so easy to remember.

Bikingbear · 19/10/2020 10:34

If the EU are planning to stop moving clocks are they planning on sticking with winter or summer?

What are Portugal and Ireland planning? They both operate in the same time zones as UK. The issue isn't just north vs south. It's an West vs East thing too. Not helped by many maps of the UK being distorted and straightened up to fit sheets of paper and TV the island is at more of an angle to the west than most people think.

TalbotAMan · 19/10/2020 10:34

I can live with the dark evenings; its the dark mornings I hate. Getting up and going out in the dark and being halfway to work as the sun rises over the motorway is horrible (though it looks like not so much this coming winter Sad).

If it was me, I'd stop putting them forward in the summer and just have real time all year.

NativityDreaming · 19/10/2020 10:34

I think it should go back to gmt and stay there. I bloody hate Spring forward!

MissMatchedClaws · 19/10/2020 10:36

I bet if you mapped the responses the 'yes/no' divide wouldn't be at the Scottish border, but somewhere south of the Midlands.

RoseTintedAtuin · 19/10/2020 10:38

As @Gancanny points out. What about the huge part of England that is in the North? Or are they to be a second thought again?

AHintOfStyle · 19/10/2020 10:38

@TheFuckingDogs

YABU - this reeks of Scot bashing
Totally agree.
Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 19/10/2020 10:40

I would favour GMT and stay there if Scotland wants something different then it is for them to decide. The stupid two days a year of sleep change is silly

Lexilooo · 19/10/2020 10:41

Quite a few people on here don't seem to understand what difference changing the clocks does or does not make.

Whether we change the clocks or not we only have the same amount of daylight. Those saying that they hate dark mornings should be in favour of the clocks changing or of sticking to GMT but a few seem to be supporting staying on BST which would make for darker mornings.

Personally I would support sticking to GMT I think morning rush hour being lighter is a bigger benefit than the evening as it tends to be less staggered with workers and school kids all on the roads at once. Evening rush hour is more spread out as schools finish earlier than offices and retail.

ireallyamthewalrus · 19/10/2020 10:43

God yes. I would actually use GMT + 1 in winter and GMT + 2 in summer.

Antonov · 19/10/2020 10:45

I think it should be up to the individual. Those of us who want to treat 7am as 6am can do. Equally those who would prefer it to be 8am rather 7am should have that choice also. In this day and age, what with technology and a greater need to take personal responsibility, never has there been a greater opportunity for the state to step back and stop nannying the people.

bruffin · 19/10/2020 10:46

@unmarkedbythat

I hate the clock change and can see why the EU is doing away with it. If Norway, Sweden and Finland can cope, I imagine Scotland and the north of England could manage.
Tbf they have so little daylight hours in winter that moving an hour woould make no difference . I had Finnish colleagues from Olau who had no daylight for 6 weeks a year
amusedbush · 19/10/2020 10:46

I just hate how dark winter is here and shifting the clocks by an hour wouldn't change much. I'm in Scotland and in winter it's dark from 4pm to 9am so B.C. (before Covid!) I'd be driving to work and trudging up and down a massive hill to get to the office in the pitch black for months. Even if we didn't go back to GMT, it would still be dark at 5pm - when most people leave work.

I'm not the biggest fan of hot weather but I can't deny enjoying when it's light until after 11pm in the summer. It just makes getting around so much nicer.

Willyoujustbequiet · 19/10/2020 10:48

Yabu to the northern England agrees with you

Here in Northumberland we are further north than parts of Scotland and many criss cross the border several times a day so how would 2 time zones work? Hmm

I dont want my kids going to dark in the pitch black. The cocks need to change as usual.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 19/10/2020 10:49

Much prefer GMT and I'd far rather stay on it all year. I remember the days of double summer time which effectively meant BST in the winter.

It was horrible and dangerous going to school in the dark. We were all issued with reflective strips for our coats. It was grim and I'm glad it only lasted a couple of years

OverTheRubicon · 19/10/2020 10:51

Yanbu. Especially during covid, when and extra hour of light for children to play in the park after school, and a slightly lighter and safer walk home after work, is far more valuable than walking to work/school in slightly less gloom.

MJMG2015 · 19/10/2020 10:51

Agree with the majority of posts.

Lighter mornings are better and if clocks aren't going to be changed it'll be not going forward for summer & staying in GMT.

AND YABU for not even saying why you object to it.
