Yellow stickered items stolen in supermarket

stackemhigh · 18/10/2020 17:33

Hi, I chanced upon some nice Asda yellow stickered items (cream cakes, vanilla cream sponge cake), reduced to very cheap. I don’t usually shop at this time do so was pleased to be able to get some bargains for family for dessert.

Got to till and remember setting them on conveyor belt. Got home and realised they were not amongst the shopping. I checked receipt and I hadn’t paid for them, so it’s clear someone has taken them whilst I was scanning my own shopping (they’re one of those standalone self/scan tills) and talking to assistant. There were a couple of people queuing so one of them has taken them.

The cakes are no big deal in the grand scheme of things, but the thought that people will help themselves to your shopping is really annoying!

Has this happened to someone else? Do people do this because it’s not technically stealing as I hadn’t paid for them yet?

Very weird, never heard of anything like it!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 18/10/2020 18:02

I have had it happen twice. Both times it was a male shopper. I think it's a matter of seeing something they want in a cart, being too lazy to go look for it on a shelf, and just helping themselves to yours. When I challenged them , I got "I was just looking at it. It looks good." and
"I didn't know the store carried this. Where did you find it?"

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/10/2020 18:06

That's just. God. Confused Wow.

I am fat, people are scared to touch my food because it's obvious I would fight for it😂

Annie19855 · 18/10/2020 18:11

YES!!!! I work in a supermarket and this happens in my store all the time ! There will actual be a que of people waiting to pounce on you when you are doing the reductions. Some people even take the slightly reduced items and then when see you doing the final reduction they will demand you reduce their items.

ButtWormHole · 18/10/2020 18:23

This happened to me! Someone took items from my trolley! The yellow sticker crowd are a crazy lot - and I say that as one of them

Rhine · 18/10/2020 18:25

Wow! I could sort of understand in Waitrose or M&S, but bloody Asda?! Why when there is much cheap stuff on sale there anyway?

Elieza · 18/10/2020 18:36

OMG! I will watch out for that the next time I have a lucky bargain.

SlopesOff · 18/10/2020 18:38

I was keeping a close eye on my trolley today as I got to the yellow sticker section when no-one was there already and had put a few bits in it. One man got very close and I turned round to watch him but he seemed to be going for the Polish sausage.

I haven't actually had anything taken recently but in the days when you would get to the till and be swamped with free carrier bags thrown down in a huge cloud one at a time by the cashier I did lose a few things under the pile of unwanted plastic bags, and a man once took my tomatoes in Waitrose as he was packing up and my stuff went through. They normally wait before shoving it through in there.

Did also leave Waitrose one day with a pack of doughnuts that had belonged to the lady in front. Felt bad about that but it was too late to find her as she had driven off.

Pinching stuff from trolleys also happens in IKEA. You get all the way round, pay and then get home to find that some swine has pinched the one thing you went in for and you are left with the stuff you bought and didn't need.

SNAP!

You touch my food, you lose an arm.

Ghouliet · 18/10/2020 19:00

I’ve never had any yellow sticker thieves but I too am fat and will eat the person who stole my food and still have room for those yellow sticker items once I got home.

How very dare they. Lazy thieving toerags. I’m angry in your behalf OP.

Annie19855 · 18/10/2020 19:01

You will find their will be regulars that know the timings of each reduction each day and will be in for them. Sometimes you could get some expensive items down to actual pennies. And people will take to freeze

Slippy78 · 18/10/2020 19:12

They weren't 'stolen'. They didn't belong to you yet.

MiniMum97 · 18/10/2020 19:15

That's slightly different to taking said items out of someone else's trolley.
ripples101 · 18/10/2020 19:16

There’s always one isn’t there @Slippy78

RedHelenB · 18/10/2020 19:16

Are you sure you didn't forget to put them 9n the conveyor belt?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 18/10/2020 19:18

I guess it's technically not stealing in the legal sense. But it is wrong and a pretty shitty way to behave towards other people.

HaggieMaggie · 18/10/2020 19:19

I hide all my reduced food under other things, have caught people rifling through my unsupervised trolley more than once..

Annie19855 · 18/10/2020 19:20

I ment to add people seriously end up fighting over the end reduced items, they will take from each others baskets and then all hell breaks loose. Madness.

AndThatsNotRight · 18/10/2020 19:21

I use the scan as you shop facility wherever possible and bag everything as I go.

BLASTPROCESSING · 18/10/2020 19:29

Reduced stuff is serious business. Have you never watch customers circle a poor price sticker carrying staff member like a pack of starving vultures?

stackemhigh · 18/10/2020 19:38

Thanks everyone, glad I’m not the only one it’s happened to 😀

@RedHelenB no, I definitely remember putting then on the conveyor belt as they were the last things I grabbed before heading to the tills.

@HaggieMaggie That’s a good idea, I’m going to have to hide the reduced goods next time!

One man got very close and I turned round to watch him but he seemed to be going for the Polish sausage.

Haha this is hilarious! Sausages at dawn!

@Ghouliet thanks for being angry on my behalf!

@SchrodingersImmigrant @SchadenfreudePersonified haha kind of what what my mum said when I told her, she said be thankful they’re gone, you don’t need the extra calories Grin

asda is not that cheap, get over it.
and yellow stickers can be a great way to buy food
but to steal someone else's is just Low

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 18/10/2020 19:40

This is so bizarre.

I mean, of course there have been times over the years when I’ve got to Asda, and thought I’m really not in the mood for this, seen a full trolly and thought if I took that I could go straight home, and meals for the week would also be more exciting. But I’d never actually do it.

JamminDoughnuts · 18/10/2020 19:40

to steal someone's reduced cakes is very mean

PrincessPain · 18/10/2020 19:40

I worked at tesco, my shift had finished but I was still in uniform and was doing a little shop before I went home.
I'd gotten myself some yellow stickered items from the bakery, doughnuts, cakes, cookies and bread. I'd got a few good bits and was quite chuffed with myself. I turned round to grab something off a shelf, when I turned back round someone was fingering all my shopping.
I was a bit like "excuse me, what are you doing?" And the person said "just checking if anything is decent".
They did seem embarrassed when I told them it was my shopping though.
