Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

@dottiedaisee

I cringe at the word toilet...loo for me every time!! Also cannot bare the words ...end of if having a disagreement!!
Sorry, dottiedaisee, but I cannot stand ‘bare’ when ‘bear’ is needed.

I think it's tradition/old fashionedness more than anything!

It's an attitude that's alive and well in my local hospital.
When I was in this year I found the hot meals very unpalatable (eg pasta cooked to mush; pastry dishes microwaved until you couldn't cut the pastry), so I stuck with sandwiches, cheese and biscuits, salad, fruit and an occasional baked potato.

Several nurses kept telling me I must have some hot food. Things like "the doctors aren't happy that you're not having hot food" and "they'll let you home quicker if you're having hot meals".

Obviously, when I asked the doctors, they said it didn't matter if it was hot or cold.
(A couple admitted they wouldn't be able to stomach the hot meals either).

@MammaSchwifty

Pickyplatter? oh that's exquisitely gruesome, mental images of a large plate laden with assorted scabs, old plasters, hairy moles, zits..... urgh!!!

When people say "furbaby" I imagine a sort of stuffed baby shaped teddy made out of fur. That's probably just me though.

I've just seen it and felt revulsion

Maybe someone much more clever than I can say whether there is a word for this.

I genuinely shudder at some words and then get annoyed. I KNOW it's unreasonable but I can't help it.

anuffername · 26/10/2020 09:35

Not just a picky platter - a posh picky platter.

are posh scabs better in some way?

Brigade - the anti mask brigade, the anti vax brigade as if they were an organised group, instead of individuals who happen to have a different view from yours.
PC brigade. People who say that make me cringe.
twobrews · 26/10/2020 16:14

Just thought of another, grazing when applied to human food rather than livestock. It's up there with picky tea 🤮

anothersleeplessone · 26/10/2020 18:54

You know "people" these days
You can't leave your door open "these days"

Mochudubh · 26/10/2020 19:21

Using the term "Silver bullet" to fix a problem, instead of "magic bullet," unless your problem is a werewolf.

bluebluezoo · 26/10/2020 19:26

“Dropped”

So many things getting dropped. People should be more careful.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 26/10/2020 19:46

Likely story and private joke always said by some snarky simpering twat.
Yummy yummy in my tummy, said by a grown man, grow up you infantile knobber.
Rock up.
Grown ass or any other Americanism used by non Americans.
Teats, makes me cringe.

ddl1 · 26/10/2020 20:03

Babysitting or childcare when it’s actually there own child

Yes. And it's never mothers who say it.

'Heartsore' as used by a rather pretentious friend.

'Shitty' - I don't in general mind swear words, but hate that one.

'I am saying this (generally something nasty) because I care about you/ out of concern.'

Yorkshirelass04 · 26/10/2020 21:28

Eksqueeze me instead of excuse me

Fably instead of family
