Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

I think many of these are MN exclusives. I certainly don’t hear them or see them written elsewhere. Mostly they don’t bother me much but I do get irrationally offended by the use of less instead of fewer, and done instead of did. Also the word panties is repulsive.

contrmary · 25/10/2020 16:09

"Free" when it is used to describe school meals, healthcare, bus passes and so on.

These things are not "free" just because the recipient doesn't pay for them directly. Someone still has to pay for them.

The ones I hate the most

#makingmemories and #blessed which with 2020 seems to have vanished

Frequentcarpetflyer · 25/10/2020 20:00

"I had A McDonald's/KFC" etc. You had a McDonald's....what...? It should be: "I had a meal/burger at McDonald's"!

lotusbell · 25/10/2020 21:51

Please remember a lot of these are colloquialisms and are all part of the rich tapestry that is our language!

cjpark · 25/10/2020 22:01

So many..
‘At the end of the day’
‘That’ll learn them’
‘I texted him / her’
Anything or anyone going on a ‘journey’ or ‘part of a journey’

In fact, probably about 20% of language makes me see red.

Frequentcarpetflyer · 25/10/2020 22:13

You don't like "texted "? What do you say?

MaeveDidIt · 25/10/2020 22:21

twobrews · 25/10/2020 22:31

"Welcomed" when you mean that you gave birth/had a baby
Yes, welcomed sounds so ridiculous as though the baby knocks at the door and is invited to stay.

I've got far too many but my current ones are
"What does .... look like?" As in "What does having four children look like?"

Facebook posts usually of a drink and a view saying "Well I've had worse Sundays"

To be fair, DD and her boyfriend seem to start or end every sentence with to be fair. It seems to have become the new like.

So many people on MN are screeched, screamed or shrieked at by strangers or they are terrified or literally shaking. I hardly ever hear these words used in RL.

twobrews · 25/10/2020 22:34

Also "I'm going pub/McDonalds/toilet" where has 'to'gone?!

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 25/10/2020 22:46

@twobrews

Where I live, people say "Going a toilet" and it actually sets my teeth on edge!

Brigade - the anti mask brigade, the anti vax brigade as if they were an organised group, instead of individuals who happen to have a different view from yours.

HeronLanyon · 26/10/2020 06:49

Passive aggressive put downs -
Jog on
You do you
Not changing for anyone
That’s just the way I am
Like it or lump it
Meh (loathe this word).
Others
Going forward
Curated (other than a museum curator type usage)
Literally - when not meant
Actually - rarely needed and often overused
So - used at start of sentence/reply/answer/post
But when ‘and’ would do and be less judgmental
‘Always’ - in an argument I hear myself using it when I don’t mean it at all - annoying and not at all helpful!

FatimaMunchy · 26/10/2020 06:53

Err or Errrr at the start of posts on Mumsnet. I don't know anyone who does it in real.life.

StealthPolarBear · 26/10/2020 06:59

Football managers always 'hit out' rather than get mildly angry
Everyone on here and in real life seems obsessed with a 'hot dinner'. Surely a meal with a certain amount of calories and nutrients is just as satisfying and filling whether hot or cold. I know I'm not alone as dh feels the same but most others seem to assume hot=meal, cold=snack.

Ulelia · 26/10/2020 07:02

Nearly all of this make me cringe a little, except famalam and cuppa. Like both of those. It's the stage that when someone says 'there's nothing worse than' I have to respond with 'yes there is, genocide' or similar. And if someone answers 'how are you?' with 'I'm good' I have to say 'at what?/quite big headed there'. But I work with teachers, they should be able to speak proper, init.

My least favourite phrase in the world is currently 'xyz broke me'. Often about something relatively trivial. No it didn't. Are you in peices? Have you had a breakdown?

Glad I got that off my chest. Off for a cuppa!

I find it's the other way round, PIL think we're really extravagant for allowing the kids to have a 'hot dinner' at lunch time and then another hot meal in the evening. I haven't blown their minds by telling them they often have a hot breakfast too!

I've seen posts on here and FB asking what people give their children for tea/dinner if they have a school lunch.

Mimishimi · 26/10/2020 07:29

At the moment ? "It's for your health and safety".

Reminds me too much of the Nazi phrase "it's for your safety".

MammaSchwifty · 26/10/2020 07:47

Pickyplatter? oh that's exquisitely gruesome, mental images of a large plate laden with assorted scabs, old plasters, hairy moles, zits..... urgh!!!

When people say "furbaby" I imagine a sort of stuffed baby shaped teddy made out of fur. That's probably just me though.

lotusbell · 26/10/2020 08:52

I think the hot/cold thing comes from the idea of needing a hot meal each day. Growing up, weekends in particular were a hot roast dinner on a Sunday and a hot cooked meal on Saturday, with a lighter meal, usually sandwiches for the other main meal. Back then, hot dinners were seen as more substantial and more satisfying. I think it's tradition/old fashionedness more than anything!

Greeneyes78 · 26/10/2020 09:02

Hun, hate it and i will ask you there and then to no t call me that
