Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

There's a real thing at the moment where people use "scream" when they mean suggested, or asked for. An example would be "people were screaming for restaurants to be open" or "everyone was screaming about how deadly the virus was".
I've only really noticed it since the virus but it's really winding me up now.

amusedtodeath1 · 24/10/2020 21:41

"I eat like a bird" Hmm

LaMarschallin · 24/10/2020 22:16

"You sound jealous, OP"

So mindless and trotted out because the poster read it somewhere and was impressed. It's cropping up so frequently, it might as well be "YSJOP", like "ODFOD".
Then it could be scrolled past even more quickly.

And people 'scream' when they mean 'shout or 'yell' but it only seems to be on here.

Overexaggerate.
Nobody ever merely exaggerates any more, it's always overexaggerate. As if exaggerate didn't already mean what they were trying to say!

See also “curated”. Aways has to be done carefully as well.

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/10/2020 07:16

Incorrectly using nonplussed to mean unbothered when it means surprised and confused.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 25/10/2020 07:22

People who 'project manage' things all the fucking time. The Shard was fucking project managed, Barbie - your extension was not.
People who claim to have been 'headhunted'. Yeah, sure you were. It's a cutthroat world, assistant nursery school management 🙄

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/10/2020 07:27

Gifted to mean given eg I was gifted (vom) this necklace

Newkitchen123 · 25/10/2020 08:05

Celebrity Z breaks their silence....

I usually have no idea who these people are, let alone the fact that they have been silent about something

NoAngel1 · 25/10/2020 08:35

‘For context’

ninninannonoonoo · 25/10/2020 10:38

Seen this morning: posh pickyplatter sounds good

It doesn't. It really, really, really doesn't.

Or has "crisis talks"

My blood pressure was through the roof when I used to read the papers

Sexnotgender · 25/10/2020 11:48

Cuppa/brew - no idea why it annoys me!

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 25/10/2020 11:55

I'm engaged when people call it 'a cup of coffee' rather than just 'a coffee' - I've yet to hear someone say 'I was just having a plate a food when the 'phone rang . . . ' I know it's unreasonable but there you have it.
I also hate the rise in people preoccupied with having things really hot - "I just want a hot cup of coffee! Is that too much to ask?" Ugh.

Pebbledashery · 25/10/2020 11:58

Lol @PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe yours made mev🤣

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 25/10/2020 12:00

To reach out... I hate it!

Isitrainingihadntnoticed · 25/10/2020 12:30

All the hashtags I've seen a friend do for her little boy #myworld #handoms #lilman #mylife

My colleague always says "wowzah" "winner winner" "essentially"

LaMarschallin · 25/10/2020 15:36

I think I'm too old to understand #hashtags.

Are people supposed to think "I'd love to see a picture of somebody's li'l prince...", happily tap in "#li'lprince" then sigh over all the random toddlers?
I wanted to ask my DD when she'd added about 6 various #s after a photo of her grandmother's 80th (can only remember #inspirationalwoman and #happyfam, which is nice and all, I suppose...), but thought it's probably something I should know Blush

DisappearingGirl · 25/10/2020 15:38

"Educate yourself".

If you can't be arsed to explain your point of view, don't bother saying anything.

Exactly. It’s so tedious.
