To consider 30 young not middle aged

I still consider 30 young however someone said to me recently that it’s middle aged. Aibu to disagree with this? 30 is the prime of childbearing years and to me anyone that can have children still isn’t really middle aged.

Who thinks it’s middle aged?! I’m nearly 33 with a life expectancy of nearly 90, Im young!

Toebarb · 18/10/2020 12:25

I think middle age starts at 40.

GreyishDays · 18/10/2020 12:25

It’s really not middle aged. I’d say middle aged is 45-70 maybe?

Iftheclouds · 18/10/2020 12:25

A friend at work he’s 26 so not very young.

Karwomannghia · 18/10/2020 12:26

He won’t say that in 4 years! Definitely not middle aged.

GreyishDays · 18/10/2020 12:27

The internet says either 40-60 or 45-65.

I’d baulk at calling someone 62 ‘elderly’, but hey.

Mrsjayy · 18/10/2020 12:27

Was the person 15 or something ! of course 30 isnt middle aged, one of my children is heading for 30 and if they are middle aged im prehistoric.

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 18/10/2020 12:27

I heard there's some new term for the middle phase of life being 38-57... Gabby Logan's podcast, can anyone remember the term?

Anyway I'd say between 35-40 we hit middle age though as most of the older generation in my family are dead between 60-70 I have felt like I was middle aged from my early 30s.

Lemonyfuckit · 18/10/2020 12:29

Good god....I'm 38 and don't consider myself to be middle aged yet but maybe I'm in denial! Definitely not 30 though...

Scarlettpixie · 18/10/2020 12:29

I would say 30 is young. 40-60 is What I think of as middle aged.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/10/2020 12:30

It is young! I am 58 and consider myself middle aged but not old.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/10/2020 12:31

I'm 35 and pregnant. Certainly don't feel middle aged

DontTouchTheMoustache · 18/10/2020 12:32

I'm 34 next week so I bloody hope not!

CecilyP · 18/10/2020 12:33

A friend at work he’s 26 so not very young.

Sounds very young and more than a little stupid. 30 is young and was even considered young when life expectancy was much lower.

Of course you’re NBU. I’m surprised you gave his opinion any credence.

Oxyiz · 18/10/2020 12:36

I don't know, people in my family seem to get into their early 70s but not much further, and 35 is literally half of 70, so I've considered my 30s as something like "middle aged".

But then I think middle age isn't necessarily about mid-life, its more seen as that bit just before "old" by some people.

amusedbush · 18/10/2020 12:36

I'm 30, frequently get asked for ID in shops and still feel like I'm too young to shop in Next Grin

Anyone who referred to me as middle aged would be told where to stick it!

unmarkedbythat · 18/10/2020 12:37

Depends entirely on your perspective. At 13 I thought 30 was ancient. At 39 I think 30 is very young!

Emmapeeler2 · 18/10/2020 12:37

Middle aged is an outdatrd expression anyway. It infers a way of living and thinking common among the 35-50 generation years ago. Like, my grandma wearing soft hats years ago.

Elieza · 18/10/2020 12:38

Are they going back to what was in the bible: that we live three score years and ten. ie 3x 20 + 10. The middle age if that would be half of 70 = 35.

People live longer than 70 nowadays. Many 80 years olds are still alive. There have been many advances in technology, health and medicine since biblical days. So now the middle age would be at least 40.

I’d suggest that 50 is the new 40.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/10/2020 12:38

Two of my CHILDREN are over thirty and I still consider myself young!

But am prepared to allow that sixty is probably edging towards older...

shinynewapple2020 · 18/10/2020 12:39

When I was a teenager I thought 30 was old, definitely Middle Aged. When I reached 30 I would say I was still young .

I'm now mid 50s so, yes, very much Middle Aged. I don't think I shall be 'elderly' in a few years at 60 though . Elderly is like my mum in her 80s

Do we need these labels ?

BlackLipstick · 18/10/2020 12:43

Middle aged means 'in the middle of life' doesn't it? As in, middle of the maximum age people can live, which could be into the 90s-100. By that definition middle aged is around 45-early 50s.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 18/10/2020 12:45

I don't think 30 is middle-aged, 40 onwards, I'd say.
"Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle" - Bob Hope.

cochineal7 · 18/10/2020 12:47

I remember being 18 and thinking 25 was way past it. Needless to say my perspective has since changed Grin

flaviaritt · 18/10/2020 12:53

I think 30 is actually the end of our actual childbearing years. I’ve been able to have children (body wise) since I was 13. And I don’t expect to be happy having them at 40.

But no, I don’t think of 30 as middle aged. 40, yes.
