I don’t want a charity shop BLANKET!!

ScaryBizkit · 18/10/2020 09:12

I have a blanket in my couch. I use it a lot. My dogs have wrecked it over time (hair, slobber, it smells etc) so I told my mum I was replacing it. She said “I’ll get you one from charity shop”. I said “no it’s ok, I’ll just get the same blanket again from asda as I like it”. She said “that’s a waste of money as the dogs will wreck it” I said “it’s ok, it’s only £20” she said “that’s a lot more expensive than what I’d pay in charity shop” I said “it’s ok, I don’t mind” she said “but I might as well get you one from charity shop” !!!!! I snapped “I WANT IT TO MATCH!!!”

I don’t want mismatching shit all over my house. I tried being nice!!! She rang me this morning saying she was going to charity shop in morning so would look out for me a blanket!! Why won’t she accept what I’ve said?

If she buys you one id donate it...back to the charity shop!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/10/2020 09:24

So the issue is whether or not it matches, not that it's from a charity shop.

See if it matches. If it does, great. If it doesn't, give it back to her: "Sorry, it doesn't match". Or put it in the car to use there.

GloGirl · 18/10/2020 09:27

Yanbu, but does she have to sit on you slobbered hairy one when she comes over? I would be tempted to let her buy a blanket that you can lay out when she comes over.

Iftheclouds · 18/10/2020 09:27

Definitely donate it back

Cardboardeaux · 18/10/2020 09:27

Can't you just wash the blanket?

KiposWonderbeasts · 18/10/2020 09:28

Just because she buys it doesn’t mean you have to use it.

Redlocks28 · 18/10/2020 09:28

Did you say, ‘no-please don’t get me one from the charity shop. Like I said, I’m getting one from X’?

Snaketime · 18/10/2020 09:30

It depends if it is because you want it to match or because you don't want one from a charity shop, which I feel deep down is the real reason. Your mum might well be able to find you the exact same one that you want from ASDA in a charity shop, you never know.
Personally I would have said ok, but just make sure it matches what I have please.

Notimeforaname · 18/10/2020 09:31

Yeah if it's a colour you can find in a charity shop, why not. Its washed. I dont think your dogs will mind it's not brand new Grin

Are you worried about using something second hand?

Thesearmsofmine · 18/10/2020 09:31

Surely the blanket you have just gets washed? My parents dogs go on one of the sofas in their house and they use blankets which get switched daily and washed so it doesn’t smell etc.

TidyDancer · 18/10/2020 09:32

It does sound like she's got the feeling that you're just concerned about it matching and not that you don't want something from a charity shop. I'm taking from the tone of your post that this is at least equally the issue for you but that may not have come across to your mum.

AnnaMagnani · 18/10/2020 09:33

Because she's your mum and in her head you are about 10 years old.
Because even though you are now a fully grown adult she misses being able to do mum things for you and so wants to buy you a blanket.
Because she loves going to the charity shop and you have given her a great excuse.

My mum used to buy me vegetables, as if I didn't have access to a supermarket Confused I would end up with so many vegetables that they would go off and I'd end up chucking them in the bin.

After a lot of fights over the vegetables I just gave up, accepted that she wanted to do a 'mum thing' for me and now I take the vegetables. She's happy, I'm happy, the bin's happy. All good Smile

RaspberryCoulis · 18/10/2020 09:35

I don’t want mismatching shit all over my house.

No. You just want slobbered on, hairy and smelly shit all over your house.

I totally see your mum's point.

THisbackwithavengeance · 18/10/2020 09:39

Just accept the bloody blanket with a smile and either use it, put it away in a cupboard for possible future use or redonate it. I don't think you can have too many blankets personally, they always come in useful.

She might find you a lovely, good quality blanket in a perfect colour - you never know!

ScarMatty · 18/10/2020 09:40

hair, slobber, it smells etc)

This makes me feel sick.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 18/10/2020 09:55

It's fine to want a matching one but it's precious to not want a charity shop one, especially if the dogs are going to ruin it.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 18/10/2020 10:17

Why are you shouting?

Thecobwebsarewinning · 18/10/2020 10:20

I wouldn’t want a second hand blanket for a pet. What if other pets in the neighbourhood found out about it and shunned them?

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/10/2020 10:20

Why don’t you want a charity shop blanket? It’s better for the environment to at least try and buy second hand before buying new. Especially a blanket that is going to go to the dogs anyway. You sound a bit wasteful and consumerist.

WhatamessIgotinto · 18/10/2020 10:21

Get your blanket from where you like, it's got bugger all to do with anyone else.

kowari · 18/10/2020 10:23

Take a picture of your sofa and sitting room and she may be able to find a blanket that matches if she likes to browse charity shops anyway. I always try to buy second hand where I can, it's better for the planet.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 18/10/2020 10:23

If Op is happy to pay £20 for a blanket she knows is going to eventually get wrecked then let her crack on and buy it.

It's her money, and her house. The fact this is an issue is baffling.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/10/2020 10:26

Why is it wrecked from hair and slobber? Surely a wash in the machine each week would sort that.

vanillandhoney · 18/10/2020 10:26

My dogs have wrecked it over time (hair, slobber, it smells etc)

Don't you wash it? I use blankets on the sofa with the dog and cats and they don't smell, nor are they covered with hair!

Pelleas · 18/10/2020 10:27

You may well get a better quality one from the charity shop than you'd get buying a supermarket cheapie.
