I don’t want a charity shop BLANKET!!

ScaryBizkit · 18/10/2020 09:12

I have a blanket in my couch. I use it a lot. My dogs have wrecked it over time (hair, slobber, it smells etc) so I told my mum I was replacing it. She said “I’ll get you one from charity shop”. I said “no it’s ok, I’ll just get the same blanket again from asda as I like it”. She said “that’s a waste of money as the dogs will wreck it” I said “it’s ok, it’s only £20” she said “that’s a lot more expensive than what I’d pay in charity shop” I said “it’s ok, I don’t mind” she said “but I might as well get you one from charity shop” !!!!! I snapped “I WANT IT TO MATCH!!!”

I don’t want mismatching shit all over my house. I tried being nice!!! She rang me this morning saying she was going to charity shop in morning so would look out for me a blanket!! Why won’t she accept what I’ve said?

Agree with the pp this isn't about the blanket it's about the mum ignoring what the OP says which is really annoying.

giantangryrooster · 18/10/2020 15:25

Well, atleast you will have a nice blanket for your dm's Christmas present Wink.

Buy what you want and tell her it's not for her to decide.

Smallsteps88 · 18/10/2020 15:28

the charity shop.

Mabelface · 18/10/2020 15:46

OP, I get it. I'm just at the point where my house has things chosen by me to have it how I want it. In my case, my daughter was trying to fill the house with fairy lights, cheap fluffy rugs etc. She's now doing that in her own house and mine is now clutter free. Buy the blanket asap and tell your mum you've done so.

Duanphen · 18/10/2020 15:56

This sort of nonsense can be avoided by just not mentioning it. If you say something like that, some people are convinced you're really asking them for a favour.

Keep your shopping list to yourself and people won't stick their nose in.

Snackasaurus · 18/10/2020 15:59

I think your Mum is only trying to be helpful and £20 is a lot to pay for a dogs blanket in my opinion but each to their own Smile

TheBlueStocking · 18/10/2020 16:00

You can get some really nice things in charity shops, especially at the moment. So I'd let her get you a blanket. If you don't like it, just take it back. Or put it in the cupboard for guests.

TheQueensCousin · 18/10/2020 16:04

@PlanDeRaccordement

Why don’t you want a charity shop blanket? It’s better for the environment to at least try and buy second hand before buying new. Especially a blanket that is going to go to the dogs anyway. You sound a bit wasteful and consumerist.
This ^^ 100%
redcarbluecar · 18/10/2020 16:07

Just get your Asda one. If she also gets one, do something else with it. You’ve told her you don’t want her to get you one. That should be enough.

FinnegansWhiskers · 18/10/2020 16:29

I use blankets on the sofa with the dog and cats and they don't smell, nor are they covered with hair

Me too. My two dogs are allowed on the sofa in the evening so I put a blanket on their side of the sofa.

Any surplus blankets go in the dogs beds and are washed weekly or daily if dogs have been for a muddy walk.

OP if you don’t want your mums blanket on the sofa can’t you put it in the dogs bed?

CSIblonde · 18/10/2020 20:42

Donate it back! If it's a charity shop in a wealthy area some of the blankets have obviously never been used & are a steal. I found a brand new pure wool blue one for £5 for the cat. If you like the one you have as it matches, you can get rid of the hair in 5mins by putting on a wet rubber glove & wiping it all over the throw . Then wash it.

@vanillandhoney

My dogs have wrecked it over time (hair, slobber, it smells etc)

Don't you wash it? I use blankets on the sofa with the dog and cats and they don't smell, nor are they covered with hair!

Christ this place is so judgemental.
StatementKnickers · 18/10/2020 21:34

I see your DM's point. Why bother trying to have anything nice if you're going to let your dogs jump up and slobber/shed hair all over it? Disgusting. You might as well have a charity shop one.

Or you could actually train your dogs to stay off the couch.

Trut · 18/10/2020 21:42

How do you get animal hair out of a blanket? Our blankets still have a fine layer of animal hair after a hot wash.

MiniMum97 · 18/10/2020 22:05

She sounds like my mum. Exactly what she would do and say.

PercyKirke · 18/10/2020 22:09

I'm assuming your house has a dustbin outside the back door. There's your solution. Neat, quick, final.

ravensoaponarope · 18/10/2020 23:17

Mine brings fruit.

Because it's nicer to have a nice blanket with dog slobber and hair all over it than a not nice blanket with dog slobber and hair all over it.

Or you could actually train your dogs to stay off the couch.

Why would you want to do this? The dogs are sofa buddies. It's nice.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 19/10/2020 12:24

@mrsmrt1981 fully agree MN is judgemental as hell, but the post you've quoted is perfectly reasonable, surely? OP is saying a perfectly good blanket is 'wrecked' purely because it is dirty. No mention of it being chewed up, ripped etc, and a new blanket isn't going to magically repel slobber, so we're all dying to know if she's experimented with washing the old one!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 19/10/2020 12:27

I've given up on getting rid of the hair. Hanging it up outside on a windy day and giving it the odd extra flap around for good measure gets some of it out.

Tape, lint rollers or (easiest) go over it with a wet sponge, comes right off
Quaagars · 19/10/2020 12:42

I was going to say YABU but the fact you told your mum no thank you repeatedly and she still kept pushing, YANBU!
MIL has a habit of doing that and it is really infuriating

gurteee · 19/10/2020 12:44

I hear you! My Mum has never actually listened to anyone in her life. It gets frustrating being steamrollered all the time.

Trut · 19/10/2020 12:50

@usedupusername Thank you!

Walkingthedog46 · 19/10/2020 12:53

I tried to donate some blankets to a charity shop recently and was told they don’t sell the blankets, they are put straight in their recycling bin.
