To wonder what I'm doing wrong with my wax melts!

Sorry boring I know but AIBU to think my wax melts should smell of the fragrance they're supposed to and not just wax?
Never used them before but yesterday bought some wax melt cubes, tealight candles and a wax melt burner thingy from Asda. They're crap! I hoped to have the room smelling of cherry but all I can smell is wax. Wondering if I'm not using it correctly?

They might just be crap wax melts

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 17/10/2020 19:33

What sort of wax was used to make them?

Pinkginandlemonadeissoyummmy · 17/10/2020 19:34

I can't remember the brand. They are in cube packets from Asda. Possibly Sweet Sensations or something like that?!

what do you do when you want to change the wax?

mine just melts/hardens/melts/hardens......how do i change it? how many 'melts' does the fragrance last?

and how do you blow out the candle without blowing wax everywhere? i'm useless at this stuff

allfallsdown · 17/10/2020 19:37

If you heat the wax for about 30 seconds with the tea light on, you can slide the wax out to change it.
GirlCrush · 17/10/2020 19:37

@Pinkginandlemonadeissoyummmy i fear we are about to enter into a whole new world of wax melt snobbery here.....i fear the supermarket and cheaper melts are going to be slated!

GirlCrush · 17/10/2020 19:38

@allfallsdown ooh thanks! will try that!

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 17/10/2020 19:38

ScentSationals?

If so, they are made with a paraffin wax mix which is why you can smell the wax. Soy wax is much better, it allows the scent to come through and is more environmentally friendly!

I can recommend these - www.rockways-online.co.uk/product-page/mini-wax-melts if you want some Soy Wax ones to try :)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/10/2020 19:39

I've got a Home Bargains pear and rhubarb melt going at the moment... It's gorgeous

terriblyangryattimes · 17/10/2020 19:45

To get wax out in one go with no residue stick the whole thing in the freezer for an hour. It'll slide right out and you don't need to waste cotton wool or whatever wiping the dish before you put a new one in

im5050 · 17/10/2020 19:53

I have 4 electric wax melt warmers that I bought of amazon
The lightbulb works same way as a candle and melts the wax
They are lovely and act as another light in the house
I wait till the wax gets hard and then get it out with a knife
I get my waxes from Facebook shops
Sassy Wax shop on Facebook is my favourite seller at the moment

PivotPivotPivottt · 17/10/2020 20:17

It depends on the wax melts. Yankee ones are good and I've heard Home Bargains ones are too I've only tried one of their scents and wasn't impressed but I keep meaning to pick up some more to try. The chuppa chup ones from B&M are good but they are sweet/fruity scents which aren't to everyone's taste (these are my favourite kind of scents).

I order from a Twilight rep on Facebook but you can order directly from the website I think. They are brilliant I never bothered with them before as I just thought it was another rubbish MLM but I noticed the page was really popular with people I know raving about them so decided to try and they really are the best I've tried. Loads of different scents to choose from. I also order home made ones from local Facebook pages which have been great as well but not as good as Twilight.

Supermarket ones are usually rubbish and just dipped in fragrance rather than made with fragrance, a local handmade seller would prob be much better.

goose1964 · 17/10/2020 20:21

My yankee candles melts just slide out of the ceramic bowl. Never have an unsmelly one.

nanbread · 17/10/2020 20:23

The only thing you're doing wrong is buying them in the first place...

Babypug · 17/10/2020 20:30

Can always pop the wax burner bowl/cup:plate whatever holds it, into the fridge and it shrinks the wax (that's melted) and it's easier to get out with a knife.

Always used the Yankee wax melts and get a fragrance that gets round our home. Also you can layer the wax fragrances to create a unique scent.

LockdownLump · 17/10/2020 20:32

The supermarket ones are not very good.

I love them so much, I ended up making my own with soy wax. Works out cheaper in the long run, and I can get the smell perfect to my tastes.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 17/10/2020 20:36

I'm not placemarking to wait for the pyramid scheme huns to appear, oh no not me 👀😂

AbbyAbal · 17/10/2020 20:39

I often buy the Asda ones, only the light pink and light blue ones. I think the pink one is beach something and blue is clean linen. They smell quite strong and better than the homemade soy ones I bought (personally I worry how unregulated these are). Maybe you’ve got a bad batch? Does it smell normal when it’s cool?

confusednortherner · 17/10/2020 20:50

I bought some from Devon Wick after seeing their Facebook ad. Never used them before but very impressed, I bought a wax burner out of Poundland and particularly like the vapour one when feeling bunged up.

Pinkginandlemonadeissoyummmy · 17/10/2020 22:27

It just smells mainly of wax. I've blown the candles out as I don't want to smell it anymore! So once it's all melted I need to remove it and try a new one? I got 3 different smells as they were on offer lol.

If you are on Instagram there is a waxmelt company called loubelles.x they are really good and often shows tips on cleaning your burners etc They deliver all over the country.

Fromthetopmakeitdrop · 17/10/2020 22:36

I love the Asda ones! And they've all smelled lovely. I like Illusion & Girlfriends night. They are far better than handmade ones I've bought in my opinion. Maybe the ones you have been buying are a more subtle scent?

Passthebubbly · 17/10/2020 22:38

The Asda clean linen and fresh air are the best I have found. Also check out snazzy wax their wax melts are amazing

M0mmyneedswine · 17/10/2020 22:43

I have the asda pink ones and orange both smell lovely. When the wax hardens i use a knife to lift edgrle then it just comes out. Not sure why you can only smell wax
