To think this is a total fucking dick move?

Toddler spilled juice on our bed, soaking the duvet and mattress protector.

Both too big for our washing machine so I popped it in the car and headed down to our local supermarket where there's a big automated washer and dryer in the car park.

Shove my stuff through the washer (it fills the 18kg drum completely) and as the timer counts down I'm getting ready to shove it in the dryer.

With the big neon timer showing just two bloody minutes of my wash cycle left, an arsehole of a woman swings her car into the spot next to mine and empties a tiny bag of washing (enough for a standard home tumble dryer or to put on a single aired) into the dryer, sets it to half an hour and waltzes off to the supermarket.

The dryer and washer are a single unit so there's no way she missed my timer showing only two minutes or the fact it was full of bulky bedding.

I have no other way of drying my duvet and mattress protector, which I need dried so I can sleep on tonight.

AIBU to think that was a total dick move on her part?

Another one here who has seen notices in laundrettes that people washing have priority over people just drying. I think businesses make more money off washing so they need to prioritise these customers.

OP I would have been pissed off too - it's highly likely that if you're washing your clothes you're going to want to dry them too and with only 2 mins left it's reasonable to expect that you'd want to go ahead of her.

Question is - would you have waited if you were she? I find the mentality of 'every man for himself 'rather than being considerate/courteous to be the norm.

nighttrains · 17/10/2020 20:11

And who the hell has a spare king sized feather duvet "just in case"?

A fool with more money than sense. We have a double duvet which was less than £20, it's a 15 tog and is a spare for if we need it. A spare does not need to be an expensive feather duvet.

Frdd · 17/10/2020 20:17

My spare duvet gets vac packed And put Under the bed. It takes up so little room. And like someone else I have summer and winter weight duvets.

Believe it or not, I would have asked "are you going to be needing the dryer?". And of I was desperate or only going to be quick "is it possible I could go ahead of you?"

I should have said that I have sensory problems so I need the weight of the feather duvet, I cant sleep under a .... micro....whatever its called, filled one as they are too light.

Frdd · 17/10/2020 20:19

My double winter weight feather duvet was £25 From ikea.

The spare summer weight one was £6 in a sale in Asda I think or it might’ve been Tesco or b and m.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/10/2020 20:19

I have 2 ‘spare’ SK duvets. Not feathers (DH is allergic) but expensive microfibres synthetic ones.

1 on the spare bed.

The duvet on my bed is an ‘all seasons’ one so two that clip together, a peak summer 4.5tog and a standard weather 9 tog to make a warm 13.5tog for peak winter. We rarely clip them together and so one or the other is in the cupboard, depending on the season. They are laundered between changes (so once a year).

Twillow · 17/10/2020 20:21

Annoying for sure, but not her fault. You are just taking out your frustration with the situation!

MrsClatterbuck · 17/10/2020 20:21

Ok I get that it was annoying but they do operate as separate units. The one near me has 2 washing machines 18kg and 8kg. The dryer is up to 8kg. I once went to use the dryer as I had washed the clothes at home but it came on rain and I needed to get them dry as I was taking some of them up to my mum in hospital. The Dryer was in use and I just had to wait my turn. I didn't use my own as it is quite old and I am convinced that it shrinks clothes hence I only use it for towels and underwear.
Some people might just use them for washing and then take clothes or bedding home to line dry. Especially duvets which might not fit into a home machine but be ok to dry outside. Plus they are not cheap and so people might just use one of the services.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/10/2020 20:21

The other one might even be 10.5 tog, thinking about it Hmm.

DumplingsAndStew · 17/10/2020 20:22

@RationalOne

Ummm Daddy is being unreasonable for leaving an open tin of Irn bru on his bedside table.... who the heck drinks that stuff anyway

ktp100 · 17/10/2020 20:23

For all you know her dryer could have been busted and the clothes needed asap.

YABU.

Lolaloveslemonade · 17/10/2020 20:24

Won’t it melt your mattress protector? I made the mistake of shoving ours in the TD once.
I melted our last one in the TD.
Bought a 100% cotton one (including filling and sides) from M&S to replace it. It is lovely.

throwaway100000 · 17/10/2020 20:25

I used to live in halls that had an on site laundromat. You can’t reserve a dryer just because you currently have clothes being washed. If someone else got to the dryer before I did, it’s fair enough for them to use it. Yes, it could be annoying if no others dryers are free but that’s just life. I wouldn’t expect them to check my washing’s timer Confused I just went when it was quiet!

You posted what you would have said if you were in her position - but it begs the question why didn’t you actually say anything to her? As she approached the dryer you could have just asked if she would mind waiting after you?

You sound entitled. You don’t know if her need was greater than yours or not. Chances are that she doesn’t own a tumble dryer or have appropriate drying facilities at home for a standard wash.

Biancadelrioisback · 17/10/2020 20:29

Winter duvet is a king size feather jobby, summer duvet is a cheapy thing from the supermarket as it spends most of its life being kicked off and shouted at for being too warm.
I love my winter duvet, just a shame I'm ALWAYS hot these days

Biancadelrioisback · 17/10/2020 20:30

Also useful to have spares incase you have guests! Otherwise what do they sleep under?

crabbiesoriginal · 17/10/2020 20:30

@PyongyangKipperbang

I should have said that I have sensory problems so I need the weight of the feather duvet, I cant sleep under a .... micro....whatever its called, filled one as they are too light.
Our feather duvet is lighter than the standard 15 tog one which is our spare.
Newkitchen123 · 17/10/2020 20:32

Over 200 comments because someone put clothes in an empty drier and used it!
The world really has gone mad!
(says she, adding to the comments!)

HuggedTheRedwoods · 17/10/2020 20:35

I'm surprised so many have never heard of these units, I thought they were quite common now and there's even one in an retail village carpark near me, in Lancashire. It's been there a long time so I guess must be popular to keep its spot.

ColleagueFromMars · 17/10/2020 20:35

Spare duvets, washing machines in supermarket car parks and Daddy left an open tin of Irn bru on his bedside table. Absolutely amazing thread, can this go in classics please @MNHQ? Grin

Do teenagers ever empty a container of washing up liquid into it and then put it on and off that happens does it ever fill the car park with bubbles? Please say yes!

DumplingsAndStew · 17/10/2020 20:36

Thanks for posting this by the way OP, I've discovered we have one of these less than 10 miles away. I'm considering going and washing my duvet tomorrow (even though it does actually fit in my machine at home 😂

Biancadelrioisback · 17/10/2020 20:36

Also spare duvets are VITAL for fort building.

Enko · 17/10/2020 20:39

I get why it was annoying op but technically she didn't do anything wrong. With taking the machine

She is being massively unresonable with the slow unloading she KNOWS you are waiting.

I have HUGE envy over the potato vending machine.

And I have a open can of Irn Bru here next to me its the drink of the Gods.

AHintOfStyle · 17/10/2020 20:45

@KnightsofColumbusThatHurt

So there is a giant washer and dryer.... In the car park of a supermarket? I'm trying to visualise this?!
Or you could RTFT where there have been many pictures posted. Or google it.

🤦🏻‍♀️

ColleagueFromMars · 17/10/2020 20:46

To the person who said OP is allowed to feel a bit miffed, I'm afraid she can't - she's Scottish, not English, and being a bit miffed is very much an English thing.

She does however have access to the ability to call something a dick move, and Irn Bru, so it's not all bad Wink
