To send my child back to school without getting test results!

I'm on the 5th day of waiting for his results. Ds 1 tests came back negative, still waiting for ds 2 who is fine. We are all fine. I can't afford time off work, ds needs to go back to school. 119 are useless. They have finally lodged a complaint but could take 3 days from now and then it could be lost. What should I do? I'm at breaking point with it all and theres no one to complain to!!

If confirmed case in ds1 bubble he won't beable to go bk until isolation period is over as there all of including teacher regardless of results

spanieleyes · 17/10/2020 17:49

The " no return without sight of test result" is included in the school risk assessment which was consulted on and agreed by parents and by the local authority. Its therefore a school rule and one that the majority of schools in my LA ( in fact, as far as I'm aware all of them) have implemented . It's no more denying a child an education than it is if a child can not return to school immediately if they have diarrhoea and vomiting.

Feelingconfused2020 · 17/10/2020 17:50

Have you actually bothered trying to chase the results?. She said she has and frankly you sound smug. I am chasing results at the moment and it's a fucking nightmare.

Op I sympathise but it does sound like you have been given the wrong info as ds1 won't be allowed back to school unfortunately. That doesn't mean ds2 can't go back but probably less need for urgency.

Aragog · 17/10/2020 17:52

I understand how frustrating it is and I totally get that there is a financial implication. The delay in results is unacceptable.

However, please do not send your child to school without his negative result.

I teach and I tested positive this week. The only place I have had any close contact with anyone beyond dh and dd is school. Now I will never know where I picked it up - I am so careful due to being vulnerable. But it is also possible it came from children in school who had no symptoms, or who had 'just a bit of a cold' - regardless I am now at home, having spent tie in hospital, unable to breathe properly and feeling fairly grim.

Please don't take the risk.

The support grant is available from your council if you are in reciept of tax credit, universal credit etc. They also have a find for a discretionary support payment if you are not claiming benefits but would still suffer hardship if self isolating.

Ring the council.

Northofsomewhere · 17/10/2020 17:59

I think you need to assume the test is positive unless proven otherwise. Many people have no symptoms, clearly whatever your first son had wasn't the virus but your other son could still be carrying the virus having contracted during ds1 isolation. I know someone who was being regularly tested as part of a study and was tested positive without any symptoms, it's entirely possible.

I know it's difficult without any money coming in but if he has it and goes back to school then him and his entire bubble will be off for 10 days + when someone else tests positive for it. It better to be safe than sorry and having to repeat the same process again due to your child.

Aragog · 17/10/2020 18:05

we would all be back to work anyway had I not tested ds 2

But your DS2 had a cough which is a Covid symptom, so you would have still had to isolate and/or test, regardless of DS1.

DumplingsAndStew · 17/10/2020 18:09

@Northofsomewhere

I think you need to assume the test is positive unless proven otherwise.

I think this is the best way to think of it.

MJMG2015 · 17/10/2020 18:24

@OhDear2200

I’m confused I thought if you’ve been in contact with someone with a positive test you had to self isolate for 14 days regardless of test results? So your DD1 can’t go back?

It’s a rubbish situation but one we are all in.

Don't be confused. You're correct.

Some people don't understand incubation period. A negative test, on say, day7 doesn't mean you won't be positive on one of the days 8-14.

Sh05 · 17/10/2020 18:31

Track and trace is a disgrace!
I got a call today from them, 5 days after college called today someone in my son's contacts tested positive!
If the college hadn't been on the ball ds would have carried on attending college and potentially spreading covid throughout his classes.
This government need to sort things out and understand that even a days delay for normal folk is one day too many

fmlfmlfmlfm · 17/10/2020 18:39

If you have been advised to isolate for 14 days you can apply for
A payment of £500 I believe from your local authority.

Testing is an absolute night mare I waited 4 days for mine. 2 days wages lost. Can't claim anything for doing the 'right thing'!

Jelly0naplate · 17/10/2020 18:39

Yabvvu unreasonable for not isolating your children who were in the bubble of a positive case.

Yabvvu to send a child back in before test results are back.

There is a money available via the council if the self isolation causes you financial problems.

It's people behaving like this that allows the virus to continue to get out of control.

Hope your kids don't go to my kids school /you're not in our local area to continue to spread this.

caringcarer · 17/10/2020 18:40

Why don't you think rules spy to you. If any of you have been in contact with a person tested positive you must self isolate for 14 days even if you feel fine and kids for 10 days. Idiots are passing on this virus because they won't follow rules as think they don't spy to them. You are not special, follow the rules.

midnightstar66 · 17/10/2020 18:44

Well you can try but the school will rightly refuse/send them back home again.

midnightstar66 · 17/10/2020 18:46

It won't matter what the results are as DS1 needs to complete 14 days isolation anyway due to the incubation period

Also this!

dementedpixie · 17/10/2020 18:49

OP has already said that the 14 days for ds1 are nearly done due to the last contact with the case. The issue is that the test result is not back for ds2 who had the cough.

LolaSmiles · 17/10/2020 18:51

This, and this is why people saying 'boohoo none of you understand why the rules shouldn't apply to me' are doing more harm than good. It's precisely because we understand that we have an issue with people thinking they're special. Round after round of fortnight bubble closures caused by parents choosing to send their children in is going to be substantially more worrying than people taking a few extra days to isolate properly.

SchrodingersUnicorn · 17/10/2020 18:56

I'm a highly vulnerable teacher. At school we have no covid protection.
I have a young child. Parents sending kids to school with symptoms, or shortly after symptoms without waiting for tests puts me at real risk of dying and my DD being left motherless.
Yes, the system is shit. Yes, you should have the test by now. And do apply for the self-isolation grant if you can.
But the system being shit does not give you the right to put my life at risk for teaching your child.
Flowers @Aragog hope you feel better soon

Cuddling57 · 17/10/2020 18:56

Are you an MP or work for Boris?
If yes then it seems you can do what you want include breaking any of the rules.

HazeyJaneII · 17/10/2020 19:09

[quote DumplingsAndStew]You say that the last day of DS1 14-day isolation was yesterday? So the first day was the 3rd?
Yet, only on the 10th, you were asking what the rules were?

...unless @DumplingsAndStew is right and the dates have gone a bit awry! @dementedpixie

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/10/2020 19:27

@tootiredtothinkofanewname

We went for a test today. Told us if you dont get results within 5 day to ring and quote the number of the card. Have you actually bothered trying to chase the results?
Have you actually bothered to read the thread?

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/10/2020 19:42

@HazeyJanell actually it was 2 weeks from the positive person having symptoms. I thought it was from when ds 1 got sent home so he only had to do 1 week and 1 day based on that. Last day was yesterday and the year go back monday. So please do not insinuate that I'm making it up dates. I have rang 119 every day to chase things up, emailed numerous MPs and the council. I will persue this just not for myself but for other families. Online it says 24 hours for results, automated message for 119 says 48 hours. It is all misinformation because of people knew the true reality they wouldn't get a test. This is about the system. If my ds is positive, which is unlikely its hardly idea for those he's already come into contact with. Its a joke and if they can't get this right then how can they expect people apply.

It definitely make me think why should I when they don't. It's only my moral duty which I'm seriously questioning because of this flawed system that I've obeyed them so far!! And the fact they can work from home and afford to and don't makes it even worse!!

Jamhandprints · 17/10/2020 19:48

When we did ours we had one result back on Sunday, one back on Monday and two back on Thursday. My work were getting so annoyed. But they wouldnt let me come back til all results were back and school wouldnt let the kids back. In the end 10 days passed for the kids before all the results were back, so they went back but I still had to wait.
Its a dumb system but you just have to wait.
