Am I being unreasonable to feel so angry when d.p talks in stupid voice to dog?

I've been with d.p 14 yrs. The sound of his voice has never bothered me. We have a new dog and this pathetic petting voice either makes me want to vom or punch him.It gets under my skin, so badly. This isn't just a cooey baby voice, it's a fucking shite high pitched pathetic childlike voice that goes through me every time. Added to, he's fucking repeating whatever he says to the fog at least five times. I want to say I find the talk very unattractive and could spit us . Is it me or am I justified in demanding he quit the shite talk?

Yanbu. I admit to talking to my dogs in the same kind of voice sometimes, only to get their attention when they’re not listening tho. It would irritate me someone talking to them like that at all the time. Doesn’t the dog get wound up with someone shrieking at it all the time?

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:47

Have you told him it's annoying you?

Nottherealslimshady · 14/10/2020 18:47

YANBU I've never used a baby voice for my dog though and would find it dead weird if someone did. But I also dont use baby voices for babies.
I'd say he sounds like a tit and to stop talking like that

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 14/10/2020 18:48

I think we need to hear the voice before we can decide!

TheWashingMachine · 14/10/2020 18:48

My husband did this to our children and the cat, I did a video recording and played it back yo him. He hasn't done it since.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 14/10/2020 18:49

Dogs live a long time. Oh well at least all that throwing up will mean you lose weight. If you want. Perhaps bin him when you get to your target weight?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/10/2020 18:49

I suggest looking him up and down, whilst saying sarcastically " I have NEVER wanted you more" , that should give him pause for thought and hopefully knock it on the head.

Smallsteps88 · 14/10/2020 18:49

I do this. Blush I know I’m extremely irritating. I’m single though. Just the DC who are subjected to it and they’re used to it. Grin

BathshebaAndGabriel · 14/10/2020 18:50

Oh blimey I’m wondering if you’re actually my husband and have changed a few details to protect the innocent.
I’ll stop. I promise.

june2007 · 14/10/2020 18:50

TBH you do sound unreasonable. I speak in a silly way to my dog too. I would be quite annoyed if I was told not to talk to my dog the way I do.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 14/10/2020 18:50

Actually just a few mentions of how unsexy you find it should put a stop to it PDQ.

Fizzysours · 14/10/2020 18:50

YABVU. Practice your stoopidpetvoice immediately, you bloody normalpetvoice WEIRDO FREAK

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 18:51

It’s well known that dogs respond well to this. I went to a dog behavioural conference and they called it the “teenage cheerleader voice” 🤢

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:57

But if your wife doesn't, I'd suggest prioritising your wife, and finding something else to keep the dog happy...

OneFootintheRave · 14/10/2020 18:58

Oh man. I talk in a "special" voice to DDog. I even sing a silly song to him but that's deffo only when I'm alone. I will have to ask DP if he's secretly cringing.

Cheeseandlobster · 14/10/2020 19:00

Stop being such a misery guts. I bet the dog likes it and he obviously loves the dog. Just ignore it

vanillandhoney · 14/10/2020 19:00

Meh, I do this with all our animals Grin

I think you either "get it" or you think it's ridiculous - you two are clearly very mis-matched in that regard. DH joins in with my ridiculous behaviour!

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 14/10/2020 19:04

I think it depends on how it sounds, tbh. We all do things that can potentially annoy the people we live with. To a certain degree, you have to choose your battles and remember that you probably do irritating things, too.

If it's that annoying that I had to say something, I think I'd try to phrase it so that it didn't come across as an insult, as much as possible. Focus on the one aspect that bothers you the most-- the pitch?

He's not unreasonable to speak to the dog in a special pet voice, but it would be nice if he'd try to avoid doing something that bothers you so much, if it's within his control.

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 14/10/2020 19:09

I wouldn't sing to my dogs when anyone from outside the household was around (...probably...) but I do it when DH is home. He should be used to it, by now. Hasn't seemed to bother him, at least!

At least the wife isn't likely to shit on the kitchen floor or eat a toilet brush if he can't get her to think of him as an awesome person who should be kept happy at all time.

Hopefully...

DaphneFanshaw · 14/10/2020 19:09

I am not sure if you are joking about this being deal breaker. It's hard to tell around here if people are being lighthearted or not anymore .
Yabu BTW it's fine for him to talk to the dog in anyway he likes.
You don't have to like it but I think it's a bit daft getting this wound up about it.
I hate the way my DP sings to reggae, I think he sounds ridiculous but I wouldn't ask him to stop.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/10/2020 19:16

This is nothing. DH narrates what the cat is "saying" a la Johnny Morris.

I don't mind though. I even started doing it too.
Sounds like you have the ick.
Does anything else he does annoy you?

wigglerose · 14/10/2020 19:19

YABU. If you don't have a pet voice are you even a pet owner?
Anyway, it's fair enough to find it irritating.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/10/2020 19:19

Studies have shown that babies actually respond best to the 'baby voice' so maybe you should. It's to do with the pitch of their hearing or something.

I would leave my husband if he wanted prioritising over the dog in such a way. The dog loves me unconditionally...
