Am I being unreasonable to feel so angry when d.p talks in stupid voice to dog?

I've been with d.p 14 yrs. The sound of his voice has never bothered me. We have a new dog and this pathetic petting voice either makes me want to vom or punch him.It gets under my skin, so badly. This isn't just a cooey baby voice, it's a fucking shite high pitched pathetic childlike voice that goes through me every time. Added to, he's fucking repeating whatever he says to the fog at least five times. I want to say I find the talk very unattractive and could spit us . Is it me or am I justified in demanding he quit the shite talk?

Are you perhaps jealous of the dog? I speak to my dog like this. I definitely love him more than DH.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 15/10/2020 11:04

Oh dear OP, I'm afraid that is very normal behaviour for pet owners! Have you not owned an animal together before?

In my house we have one grumpy cat and an ever-fluctuating number of pet rats, all of whom are spoken to in baby talk, and we reply for them too.
"Oo's Nanny's big boy? Duzzee want some biccy den?"
"Ooh yes fankoo Nanny, nom nom nom"

Don't come round to mine :D

The most effective way to deal with it is to be upfront, tell him you know it's not doing him or the dog any harm but that you're finding it really tedious and it's making you see him a different light!

If pushed, a hint that men using baby voices are a turn-off should sort it.

RincewindsHat · 15/10/2020 11:24

I do this to my dogs and it does sound ridiculous and I do find it annoying when others do it to their dogs...but I will never stop Grin good luck winning this one with your partner!

Mittens030869 · 15/10/2020 11:36

I would find that annoying, too, but then I wouldn’t want a dog anyway. My DH is allergic so that won’t happen though my DDs do ask for one sometimes.

I have three cats, though, which I know my DH finds irritating sometimes. (He hasn’t complained about my voice though, thankfully. Grin)

yelyah22 · 15/10/2020 11:38

YABU. Dogs like it and respond to it, and it's sweet that your husband loves the dog. Grump.

yelyah22 · 15/10/2020 11:42

Also, it's definitely normal with pets. Both OH and I sing and talk to our cats all day every day. In voices I would never use outside our home out of pure shame... but when your baby cat does a cute baby cat thing and you need to tell him he's the handsomest baby cat in the whole wild world... it's got to be done!

Oilyoilyoilgob · 15/10/2020 11:42

@Eckhart and @lovepickledlimes 😂😂

This morning was
“Ooh la la mama has ze pouch for you, would Madames like ze chicken or le boeuf”?

Cats “we would like ze chicken please mama”

Hahahaha 😂🤭

Oilyoilyoilgob · 15/10/2020 11:42

And I’m not french 😂😭

IjustbelieveinMe · 15/10/2020 11:45

I thought it was common knowledge that your voice automatically raises 10 octaves higher when talking to a dog? My dog loves it when I shriek "here he is!" when he comes strolling into the living room for food after a 4 hour siesta.

yelyah22 · 15/10/2020 11:46

The repeating is a definitely a thing, too! e.g.:

"Are you a HUNGRY BABY?"
meow
"He's a hungry hungry baby"
MEOW
"Ohhhhh he's HUNGRY, what a hungry boyyyyy"

...and repeat. While feeding said hungry boy. I'm sorry. It's unavoidable hahahah 😂

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2020 12:24

These have made me laugh.

Because I do the same.

Max, my Labrador had to go on special dry food, so no much variety these days.

So dinner time will go something like this:

17:48pm bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark and repeat

"Max it is still 10 minutes until dinner time.

Mummy I am weally hungry now..

Are you ready for your delicious biscuits Maxipaxi?

Yes mummy I am weally weally starving now. Look I am nearly eating off my own leg.

Ok Maximoo, lets go although your clock is slightly out today.

Yes Mummy but I am weally weally weally starving now.

These biscuits look delicious Max, look you are dwooling.

Yes Mummy I want those biscuits now, right now."

Scoffs biscuits in seconds

"Ooh Mummy theys was just soooo delicious Mummy. Look I am just checking my bowl for another 30 times to be sure i found them alllll"

I think my neighbours must think I am mad Grin

NiceandCalm · 15/10/2020 13:21

I have tears!!

I give my pets voices. My male dog has a little boy voice, my grumpy cat has a gruff voice although only say's 'FO' and my other male cat is sooo sweet he has a little girl voice. I've even got my DS doing it!
My DP has never complained but maybe an eye roll or two. Grin

Solongsugar · 15/10/2020 15:38

No we never had animals , but three children. If we had animals before, we wouldn't have had children .

OP posts:
lovepickledlimes · 15/10/2020 16:19

@Oilyoilyoilgob @NiceandCalm two big massive maine coon cats and a small matlese 'baby' Fin the male cat is so regal and a proper gentleman never walks away from an upset lady his voice is like a french aristocrat, the female rules the roost but can be a bit of a clutz and not the brightests hers sounds like a peppy girl but a bit nasal, the maltese (baby of the lot) similar to the female cat but a bit higher and swears like a sailor

NiceandCalm · 15/10/2020 16:41

We sound totally insane! Grin

QueSera · 15/10/2020 16:45

I also do it to the DCs’ teddies.

Yes I do the teddies too! In fact I do it for any creature or object that my DC might like a comment or response from - neighbourhood cats, birds, trees, clouds, ladybirds, inanimate objects etc - everything has a voice lol

Fluffybutter · 15/10/2020 16:46

I do this to my cats ,my dh does it too but it’s more just to take the piss out of me .
It bothers me more when people do it to children than animals , sort of patronising..

IjustbelieveinMe · 15/10/2020 17:26

When my dog yawns he sounds like Cilla Black about to belt out Alfie. So if he could talk he would defs have a scouse accent.
Solongsugar · 15/10/2020 17:33

Update; I told him last night I couldn't put up with the voice. He got it and even laughedHe's came in and full on dog talking and I feel so fucking angry.

OP posts:
june2007 · 15/10/2020 18:33

I think this is one you have to let wash over you.

unmarkedbythat · 15/10/2020 18:34

What do you refrain from doing so as not to irritate him? Because I think right now I would stop self regulating if you have a habit that peeves him...

Pikachubaby · 15/10/2020 18:39

My DH tells me off for doing a song song voice to the dog, and a bit of singing too Grin

But I only started doing it to get her to listen to me. If we are walking the dog, and DH calls her in gruff voice, she ignores him, then he shouts at her for being naughty... and she actively avoids him. When I call her in a high pitched sing song voice, she responds

It’s the dog that makes me do it!

Champagneforeveryone · 15/10/2020 18:48

I can see it would be annoying, but as a singular thing it seems a bit extreme to consider ending your marriage over.

Mind you DH refers to himself as "daddy" when talking to DCat so I'm probably not the best sounding board Wink
