Am I being unreasonable to feel so angry when d.p talks in stupid voice to dog?

I've been with d.p 14 yrs. The sound of his voice has never bothered me. We have a new dog and this pathetic petting voice either makes me want to vom or punch him.It gets under my skin, so badly. This isn't just a cooey baby voice, it's a fucking shite high pitched pathetic childlike voice that goes through me every time. Added to, he's fucking repeating whatever he says to the fog at least five times. I want to say I find the talk very unattractive and could spit us . Is it me or am I justified in demanding he quit the shite talk?

I think if it’s bugging you this much, there are deeper issues. You wouldn’t consider splitting up with someone because of them using a baby voice to talk to a puppy if everything else in the relationship was great.

supersop60 · 14/10/2020 19:30

I get you OP
My DP does 'performance - dog -owning' the way that some parents do 'performance- parenting'!
ie loudly, obviously, and looking around to check who's watching. (oh yes, and the stupid voice)

Bluetrews25 · 14/10/2020 19:31

Is this your first dog, OP?
Not fallen in love with it yet?
Go and see your GP, this could be post-dog-arrival-depression. I had it myself.

SimonJT · 14/10/2020 19:32

How else are you meant to talk to a pet?

Onxob · 14/10/2020 19:34

😂 mine does this too and I also feel my toes curl when he does. It gets right under my skin. I can't say anything though as I'm a million times worse - I sometimes worry someone will walk in on me unexpectedly when I'm talking to the dog as I sound so ridiculous - I really can't help it though (I love him just as much more than my DC!)

lovepickledlimes · 14/10/2020 19:36

You would absolutely hate my household lol me and fiancé both do it and even responded for the pets in their voices (yes all three have their distinct voice pmsl)

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 14/10/2020 19:43

Yabu - you would hate me then. I always talk to ddog as though she's a toddler. I sing nursery rhymes to her and all sorts.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 14/10/2020 19:44

I have a dog. We all use the ‘pet voice’ when talking to him 90% of the time but for some reason DS’s version of the pet voice is fucking infuriating. I don’t know why. I love him, we have a good relationship. I don’t generally find him annoying but something about his ‘doggy voice’ really gets on my wick. The stupid dog loves it though, so I just grit my teeth and get a grip.

isthismylifenow · 14/10/2020 19:45

I thought everyone spoke to their dogs that way.

I sing and dance with mine too.

Not in company of course 😂

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 20:05

Like it's an adult, which most are. My dog would find it incredibly patronising if I put on a stupid voice when I'm talking to her. Especially when I'm reading her the news.

Solongsugar · 14/10/2020 22:32

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind fun , just it's no fun listening to not funny shite talk. And it's like a stuck record.

OP posts:
TheNoodlesIncident · 14/10/2020 22:43

Is it the pitch of the voice or the things he says?

I've also heard that dogs respond better to higher pitched voices, but that was on Dog Borstal and therefore years ago. No idea if it's still considered the case.

I suppose YANBU to find it annoying, but maybe he's doing the right thing even so?

M0rT · 14/10/2020 22:46

Not my DH but someone else talks like this to my dog, and for my dog.
Lovely person so I work hard on keeping a blank face when she does it.
But it is hard!
I have a baby voice and it's the same as my dog voice but it's gentle, not a Disney character high pitched lisping assault on the ears!

Butchyrestingface · 14/10/2020 22:47

But if your wife doesn't, I'd suggest prioritising your wife, and finding something else to keep the dog happy...

Any bloke who tried to make me choose between him and DP (Dear Parrot) mama's precious princeling would not come off well in the exchange.

QueSera · 14/10/2020 22:51

This is how I know that I will be single forever - I do crazy voices, accents, words etc to the DC and DCat.......would put any man off.....will be single FOREVERSad

unmarkedbythat · 14/10/2020 22:52

That sounds really annoying tbh. Have you told him how irritating and unattractive you find it?

Anordinarymum · 14/10/2020 22:55

Good job you are not at my house OP. My dogs talk back to me, and they speak to my grandchildren too. They also swear and have to be told off for being cheeky :)

Sneakyfox · 14/10/2020 22:56

Don’t vomit...the dog will just eat it and then you’ll hate it even more. I talk to most of my pets in a stupid voice, the dog loves it and the chickens love me picking them up and ‘singing’ to them. However, I would never patronise the cat with a silly voice...she already looks at me with such distaste.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 14/10/2020 23:01

@Butchyrestingface precious princeling-I love it 😂

I talk to the cats in baby voice. Or foreign accented voices (normally french). They talk back to me too, but it’s really me so really I’m conversing with myself while pretending to be a cat 😳 this is 12 years of it too so can’t blame lockdown craziness 😸

PeterPansShadow · 14/10/2020 23:20

You don't just speak to a dog normally... Are you insanse?!

Seriously though, YANBU to find it annoying. Record it and play it back to him.

I suspect you'll need to compromise on some cooey voice though because as I say... You can't just speak to a dog in a normal voice. Too weird.

Eckhart · 15/10/2020 08:12

I'm just imagining people calling their off-lead dogs in the great outdoors, all with cooing voices or soft, french accents Grin

Eckhart · 15/10/2020 08:14

@Butchyrestingface

DP (Dear Parrot

Love this Grin

lovepickledlimes · 15/10/2020 08:50

@Oilyoilyoilgob good to know we are not the only ones that reply for our pets 😂🤣😂 they each have their own distinct voice too

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2020 09:03

It gets worse though, as along with speaking to them in all sorts of ways, they have nicknames too. And they know them Grin

My ddog Max aka Maximoo, BigBoy, Bugalugs

Molly aka Mollymoo, Mols, BigGirl, PrettyGirl,

etc etc

makingmammaries · 15/10/2020 09:21

I do this to all of our animals too. We have 11 animals. I also do it to the DCs’ teddies. DH is still here. Suck it up, OP.
