We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

@noworklifebalance I buy it in big 5 litre bottles in Costco for approx £3- it’s just bog standard distilled white vinegar. You can get it online easily if you don’t do Costco.

@noworklifebalance forgot to say I decant some into an old washing up liquid bottle for ease of use

Thank you, @Flylilly Smile

DH is allergic to most scented products so we use natural unscented detergent and no softener. I am used to it, but nothing smells that lovely clean smell unless line dried.

My mother loved a good, perfumed fabric softener. When I'd visit she'd do my wash and then i could savor the smell 'of her house' between visits. I now have only one item of clothing that still smells like 'her' and I can't bear to mess with it in case I wear the smell away 😢

to the vinegar users- how much do you put in?

not sure how much in ml, but I fill the softener compartment to the max line.

My house currently smells of fabric conditioner & clean washing.
It is gorgeous. I hate washing that doesn’t smell of anything. Can’t think of anything worse than vinegar clothes 🤮

Stopped using it years ago when I twigged it was the build up of that making my washing machine smell... and not in a good way! I also think it builds up on clothes and they smell odd after a while too. Nothing but Lidl's Non Bio and the occasional slash of Calgon for me now.

Do you know what she used? Could you try it yourself? I love the smell of my Mum’s washing too.

I have no sense of smell, but i like the feel of clothes washed with fabric conditioner. Not towels though. My DP dries our towels in his tumble-dryer, and they do feel nice.

the clothes smell only faintly of vinegar when fresh out of the washer and you can't smell the vinegar at all once dry.

ref. White vinegar. I never put anything in the drawer of the machine. I put the vinegar, usually half a cup, and eco detergent ,in a reusable plastic ball, straight into the drum of the machine. Oh and sometimes I use half a cup of bicarb. too for dirtier, white washing.

That way our machine stays clean . The washing smells fine.
