We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

I love scented fabric softener but my house doesn't reek of it. Just a slight perfume, especially straight from the dryer, that dissipates.

@TwilightSkies

God people on here are so dramatic! I can imagine them walking up the laundry aisle with gas masks on so as to avoid the CHEAP REPULSIVE TACKY fumes. They only wash their clothes in BOILING water and scrub it with a NATURAL rock, don’t you know!? Line-dried only, you peasants!

I love laundry smells, but then again I’m a bit of a cheap, tacky peasant myself. I do smell great though!

@BrazenlyDefying

have been complimented on how clothing smells

No you haven't, don't tell fibs. Nobody goes around telling people how nice their clothes smell.

Yes they do. I have asked a friend what fabric softener she used because her children's clothes smelt lovely (Fairy in case you're wondering). A lady I worked with asked another worker which fabric softener she used because she always smelt lovely. In the entire history of the world I am sure we are not the only two people who have ever commented on the smell of other people's clothes.

Don’t be daft. That’ll ruin the cashmere.

Fucking hell. Yes people do compliment each other on how nice their clothes smell because lots of people like laundry scents!

No-one has complimented YOU because your clothes smell like vinegar and soda crystals. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ontheroadtorecovery · 14/10/2020 17:31

Ridiculously happy I have been proven not to be a big liar by other posters Grin

BrazenlyDefying · 14/10/2020 17:33

My clothes dont smell of anything apart from fresh air. I don't use vinegar and don't use soda crystals.

If a friend rushed up to me and told me my jacket smelled lovely I would think they'd lost their marbles. It's like people having prolonged conversations about toothpaste- something which only happens in adverts.

I also dint think I've ever noticed a strong smell of conditioner from a friend or their clothing.

And I stand by my initial point that if you are a regular user of this stuff, you don't notice the smell after a while.

My neighbour uses her dryer all year never hangs clothes out and her fabric conditioner is so strong some days we have to go in the house

When she opens her front door you can smell it everywhere

But i let it go as they are nice, quiet and no trouble , would rather stay on good terms with a neighbour than cause trouble !

cheeseychovolate · 14/10/2020 17:42

It's a similar thing, but I can't stand the smell of peoples clothes when they have plug inns all over the house. The smell even clings to my clothes if I've just popped over for a cuppa.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 14/10/2020 17:44

Couldn't agree more! I hate chemical fake scents, fabric conditioner is almost as bad as air freshener, which just adds a revolting smell over the one you're trying to get rid of.

I started using Ecover fabric conditioner as I thought it would be better as it's 'natural' but then one day ran out, didn't use anything, and haven't bothered since.

I'd think the same about marbles being lost if a friend started ranting and raving about people using fabric softener.
Atomsaway · 14/10/2020 17:52

Wow! I never knew I was in the minority of people who like the smell of fabric conditioner.

Now the heating is on and I am drying some clothes indoors, I think my house smells great! Grin

marmite79 · 14/10/2020 17:57

Yeah I agree. Cannot stand most fabric conditioner smells. Tbf I have eczema and can’t really use many anyway but the smell makes me gag. Once I bought some to wash my curtains to make them smell nice but the smell made me gag!

My clothes never get softener in with them. Not had a problem yet!

userxx · 14/10/2020 18:01

Let what go? The fact she's uses fabric conditioner?

😂 I can see it now on Britain’s Worst Neighbours....woman has violent dispute with neighbours over their nice, freshly scented laundry drying outside. How dare they?!

Stripesnomore · 14/10/2020 18:07

I like the smell of it, particularly comfort pure.

doadeer · 14/10/2020 18:09

Things that smell VILE to me would be poo, rotten food, body oder, smelly fish etc. I can't imagine feeling this strongly about something perfumed.

I love the smell of my house when washing is drying and I have oil diffusers and candles everywhere - you would all be gagging!

speakout · 14/10/2020 18:48

But some perfumes are vile.

Being stuck in an office or sharing a lift with someone wearing strong perfume can make me feel sick.
Walking through the perfume department of a department store has the same appeal as walking past a dirty gents toilet.

MonkeyDance · 14/10/2020 18:54

You bay find it horrifying to learn that there is a whole genre of ‘laundry scent’ perfume that has a huge cult following. Stuff like CLEAN Fresh Laundry, Demeter Laundromat etc.

So I’ve heard anyway Wink

MonkeyDance · 14/10/2020 18:55

-might find it

ButtonMoonLoon · 14/10/2020 18:56

I love fabric conditioner- I use it in every wash!

Bloomburger · 14/10/2020 19:04

I love it
I love the smell
I love the feel
I love the little pearls and add them to my towels and bedding

I love fabric conditioner and my friends have previously asked me what brand I use as they like the smell of my clothes, my clients like the smell of my towels and the lady I hand DDs clothes down to asked me too.

I don't get the hate on here. Cigarettes or stale sweat 🤢 but fabric conditioner is lovely as us dettol antibacterial I wash stuff and the lovely little pearls

youkiddingme · 14/10/2020 19:07

I find it a really unpleasant, artificial smell. I'm amazed how strong it smells.

Elle1234 · 14/10/2020 19:10

I love it. Im in a hard water area and without it everything feels stiff, even if its been in the drier!
But I do understand the dislike of strong chemical smells, I personally hate air fresheners, especially those ones that hang in the car, the smell makes me feel sick!
And I cant bare the lavender scented softener, i was given clothes by someone who used it and i had to rewash them all cos the smell was awful.
Genuine question for those of you who use vinegar... does it not leave a smell? Are you not all walking around reekimg like a chop shop??
