that fabric conditioner is VILE?

We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

I went off fabric conditioner when I read one of the ingredients was Formaldehyde!Confused

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 15:47

@lazylinguist

I wear a very pleasant (and expensive) perfume, I don't need to drown the laundry in cheap and unpleasant "fragrance"

One artificial fragrance vs another. It's a question of personal preference. Some people might hate the smell of your expensive perfume. Price tag is no guarantee of universal appeal.

no one said it was Hmm

The beauty of a perfume is that you don't smell it on every one around you anyway.

Are you always so pleasant or just in a bad mood today? Just curious.
It's a completely futile thread, only on MN does someone need to pop up to make unpleasant personal comments 😂
No one can care that much that fabric conditioner is not loved by everyone else, can they?

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 15:51

gamerchick
why do you assume I expect everyone to find it pleasant exactly? I don't expect everyone to think the toilet deodorant I buy is pleasant either Grin
More important, why would you even think I could care?

It's YABU, I agree with the OP, get over it
🤷

QueenStromba · 14/10/2020 15:51

I don't think I've ever smelled fabric softener on anyone but I bought a car in August that had a Yankee Candle air freshener in it and it still reeks of the stuff.

LakieLady · 14/10/2020 15:51

I've tried both soda crystals and white vinegar in an attempt to give up fabric conditioner, but I must be doing something wrong as neither made any discernible difference. Towels, jeans etc were stiff as a board and rough as sandpaper. Plus I line dry, indoors when necessary.

I'm not a fan of highly perfumed things and have found that Aldi or Lidl's cheapest fab con has very little scent. When I can't be arsed to go out of my way to go to Aldi or Lidl, I can be found in the laundry aisle, opening fab con bottles and sniffing the contents.

That gets you some funny looks, I can tell you.

All this hate for fabric conditioner Shock I live in a hard water area and have been complimented on how clothing smells I do only put a tiny bit in tho
Me too. Nursery workers have complimented on how nice my children's clothes smell and they are washed in fabric conditioner.

Guess we are both liars 😂 I can't believe how aggressive some people are!

MN is full of bloodhounds who can smell scented sanitary towels (as though anyone ever uses them) from 100 paces and will collapse in a vomiting heap if anyone DARES eat hot food near them in an enclosed space.

BrazenlyDefying · 14/10/2020 16:01

DH has a jelly belly air freshener in his car and I can't bear that either. It smells really sweet.

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 16:07

If you can smell your own fabric conditioner, it's not unreasonable to imagine that others can smell it too, no need to be a bloodhound.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/10/2020 16:13

Although I don't use fabric conditioner I do pop a bit of Zoflora into a towel or bedding wash. Not enough for a strong scent to come through but there is a faint whiff of it. I dont use it for clothes though

I don't. It's the same thing. You're foisting some smell on other people and perfume isn't subtle. People just get used to it on themselves.

You could be standing next to someone and each thinks the other smells vile. It's amusing.

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 16:21

gamerchick
how is that relevant?

I am guessing the majority of people don't buy and use any kind of perfume they hate, fabric conditioner or other Grin so obviously we disagree.

More the the point, I wouldn't spray my pillow with my own perfume - so I doubly agree with the OP. I dislike the smell of fabric conditioner anyway, but I would dislike any strong smell on my own beddings full stop.

PleasantVille · 14/10/2020 16:30

@Poppydot3

I live in a hard water area and use a cupful of white vinegar in the final rinse. Leaves clothes beautifully soft and smelling just fresh and clean. The vinegar also keeps the drum and pipes squeaky clean. Wouldn’t use anything else. It’s really cheap in Aldi’s too.
Slightly OT but I have never heard of Aldi referred to as Aldi's, is that a phone autocorrect or do some people actually call it that, I don't get that at all Confused
PleasantVille · 14/10/2020 16:36

Surely the point of perfume is for it be able to be smelt by others or what's it for?

Actually I think strong perfume is just as bad as fabric conditioner, I used to work with a women whose perfume literally made me gag, it was awful.

Rainbowllama4 · 14/10/2020 16:41

Love fabric conditioner, my favourite is the gold Lenor one, hard water area and need it so clothes aren’t crispy, don’t use it for towels though.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/10/2020 16:46

I think it's a bit like people saying they are going to Tescos when it's actually Tesco.

Nobody can come within 2m of me without a mask so it's unlikely.
MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 16:48

I heard a friend say she went to Mataland the other day.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/10/2020 16:50

"Some people might hate the smell of your expensive perfume."

I used to be able to tell if a colleague had been in the lift that morning by the lingering smell of her perfume. Never had that with fabric conditioner.

1Morewineplease · 14/10/2020 16:50

@draughtycatflap

It is absolutely VILE stuff! The REEK is DISGUSTING! It smells like ANN WIDECOMBE’S SWEATY BALL SACK! I know a woman who had so much softener on her clothes she slid into the road and was killed. Serves her right for sticking up the place!
Im laughing so much at this!
MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 16:51

Perfume and aftershave is also vile. Sneezy stuff.
I used to work with someone who would spritz herself with expensive scent several times a day, much to the annoyance of a man in a nearby desk.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/10/2020 16:57

@ReeseWitherknife

My ds friend used to get a lift with us to school but I had to make an excuse not to take him in the end because he reeks of the most stomach churning fabric conditioner/washing powder. It was awful, like cheap air freshener, my poor IBS stomach just couldn’t hack it 🤢
Ha! Try having a whole class on Monday mornings reeking of blue comfort. But I guess it’s better than the poor little sods who never get their clothes washed.
Anordinarymum · 14/10/2020 17:00

If you line dry your washing, fabric conditioner actually stops the washing from drying as it holds moisture. I don't like the smell at all and it's not necessary

TwilightSkies · 14/10/2020 17:05

God people on here are so dramatic!
I can imagine them walking up the laundry aisle with gas masks on so as to avoid the CHEAP REPULSIVE TACKY fumes.
They only wash their clothes in BOILING water and scrub it with a NATURAL rock, don’t you know!? Line-dried only, you peasants!

I love laundry smells, but then again I’m a bit of a cheap, tacky peasant myself. I do smell great though!

Agree. I use expensive scented body lotion which is a much more subtle effect.
