We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

Can’t bear it - and we used to live in a hard water area in London and it still wasn’t necessary. We moved away and now I use smol (just the washing liquid, not the fabric conditioner) which gives a tiny bit of scent but not over powering. So many reasons not to use fabric conditioner.

Upherefordancing · 15/10/2020 00:14

Fabric conditioner is the ground zero of useless stuff you're meant to think is a necessity! Avoid!!

YoureRight · 15/10/2020 00:20

^’I love it
I love the smell
I love the feel
I love the little pearls and add them to my towels and bedding

I love fabric conditioner’^

A bottle of fabric softener wrote this.

@Gwenhwyfar

"Some people might hate the smell of your expensive perfume."

I used to be able to tell if a colleague had been in the lift that morning by the lingering smell of her perfume. Never had that with fabric conditioner.

We used to have a repair engineer who must have bathed in cologne/aftershave - not only could you track him round the building by following the scent trail, but it could still be detected the following day after he'd left!

Very bad for asthmatics, migraine sufferers etc.

TwilightSkies · 15/10/2020 02:45

I do admit to having a fabric conditioner obsession though and I was happy when I found my new washing machine had a magic fabric conditioner booster button. Woo hoo!

@SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff what?! Please enlighten me!

MonkeyDance · 15/10/2020 13:37

Is this like those threads where people tell you you’re a clean freak weirdo for washing everyday? Like, why would you want to smell of SOAP? Grin

Marcipex · 15/10/2020 13:41

It’s a brilliant marketing trick to sell the waste product animal fat that is left over from meat processing.
I can’t understand anyone using it 🤢

^^ also wanting to know 😆

SinisterBumFacedCat · 15/10/2020 13:47

It’s very bad for sensitive skin, gave me and DS bad eczema. I can always tell when DS has been cuddling one of his friends who’s mum used it because he comes home from school smelling like a flower bomb.

Soubriquet · 15/10/2020 13:50

I hate you lot

Today was the first time I ever really connected that “slimy” feeling you get with certain clothing and fabric conditioner.
I always thought it was one of those things Envy

IHateCoronavirus · 15/10/2020 13:58

I LOVE it! I change it frequently so I get the full benefit. I was especially fond of pupils whose clothes were particularly pungent with it (far better than the Friday afternoon mucky smell that was a common occurrence with many). Envy

My happiest time living overseas was when I lived downwind of a detergent factory. I used to sit on my balcony merrily breathing in the chemicals. Beautiful!

Ginfordinner · 15/10/2020 14:08

can’t understand anyone using it 🤢

Because:

  1. They like the smell?
  2. They like the way it makes their clothes feel?
  3. They don’t have skin allergies?
  4. Vegan and biodegradable fabric softeners exist
wink1970 · 15/10/2020 14:33

I add half a cap for our bedding and use Dettol Laundry for everything else. Mind you, I tumble dry most things, except jeans.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 15:28

Ihatecorono I do hope you don't get anything nasty from breathing in those endocrine disrupting, formaldehyde containing fumes.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 15:44

There is enough pollution in our environment that we can't help breathing in. Why would someone deliberately want to breathe it in?

I just thought of fags of course. Grin A lot of people don't care about their health even with the VIRUS raging around.

I'll never forget seeing someone outside the shops lifting up their mask to put a fag in their mouth. The irony is amazing!

MammaSchwifty · 15/10/2020 16:21

Yep, it's gross. Like most things with excessive artificial scents. I live in an area with extremely hard water, but I love a nice crispy towel to dry off with!

eatsleepread · 15/10/2020 16:24

But I love blue Lenor Blush

PenfoldPenny · 15/10/2020 16:50

Awful stuff, I never use it.

Mydarlingsleepthief · 15/10/2020 16:51

I love fabric conditioner I use the strongest perfumes one I can find 😂

headinthedrawer · 15/10/2020 17:31

And there I was thinking my house smelt of dog.I'm very to happy to learn it actually reeks of blue comfort which I can no longer smell.

VinylDetective · 15/10/2020 17:34

Is it? I thought we wear masks to protect other people.

SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff · 15/10/2020 21:12

@TwilightSkies & @chunkyrun - Sorry for the delay in getting back to you re: My washing machine! I’m a bit sad to say after finding the instruction booklet it isn’t officially called a ‘magic fabric conditioner booster button‘ it is the ‘Soft plus option’. I think you will agree the name I gave it was much better! See attached picture from the instructions, they seem to think it improves the fabric softness but I still think it is a bit magic and somehow adds a bit of extra oomph to the fragrance too! But judging by this thread many people think it stinks anyway so my clothes must smell beyond disgusting! Grin

that fabric conditioner is VILE?
TwilightSkies · 15/10/2020 21:19

Ooooh I’ll have to check if my machine has this magical function! I want slimey, disgusting clothes too Grin
Going to stock up on a few new fragrances tomorrow 😉

SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff · 15/10/2020 21:38

@TwilightSkies
Ha! My current faves are Comfort Honeysuckle & Sandalwood and Comfort Fantasy! I hope you find some good offers on tomorrow Grin

Bojheybuddy · 15/10/2020 21:46

I use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. It softens your clothes and I confirm your washing doesn’t end up smelling like a chip shop.
