What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

love that you think really rich people would buy clothes from Joules grin we obviously have a different idea of really rich!

I don’t. I said that people aspiring to look as if they ‘belong’ might be the people buying those godawful clothes.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 14/10/2020 15:19

Because you do know that skincare doesn’t change anyone’s facial features, right?

That's what I was (poorly) attempting to differentiate. It's not about quality of skin, though there will be differences based on diet and lifestyle, but about softness over hardness of features. Within 2 miles of my home are 2 private schools and 3 state schools. You can see the trends in facial features when you compare the pupils. Some girls from the state schools undoubtedly look after themselves but the features are the differentiator. I went to one of the state schools and so does my son.

As someone else smartly pointed out above, explain why so many girls from relatively humble backgrounds, including poorer countries, forge careers as top models despite their (according to you) genetic disadvantages and ‘hard’ features?

This thread goes from strength to strength!

You didn’t read what she wrote, did you?

The Queen was thin when she was younger! That's not exclusive to the Upper classes!😂
I didn't say it was, I said it in response to the comment that the Queen has never been thin.

@Iamthewombat

As an ex-personal shopper, it is in my experience those who are new to their wealth tat splash the cash and display their wealth in a rather vulgar and obvious way. I used to love my really wealthy (old money) clients as they were always way more down to earth, gracious and polite, and often looked like they’re got dressed in the dark/a jumble sale.

Actually you should have been glad of those newly wealthy vulgar people you so despise. They would have spent more than the Brideshead Revisited people who, by your description, didn’t buy new clothes very often.

You do know that Vicious Jackdaw was taking the P when she posted this, right?

“Rich Arabs and Russians with their frightfully tacky new money, one would think.”

Actually, I never said I wasn’t glad of my newly wealthy clients - I had one who flew in from Monaco twice yearly, dropping £35k with me each time. That was a lot of commission in my pocket. But, having gone to school with plenty of ‘old money’, it was an interesting contrast between behaviour and manners.

That is all.

ToryAldi · 14/10/2020 15:49

I didn't say it was, I said it in response to the comment that the Queen has never been thin. But so what? - it's hardly a defining characteristic of being rich when so many poor people seem to manage it.

movingonup20 · 14/10/2020 15:57

To be honest it's often more that the style of dress is classic and often well loved (though well made/tailored and obviously expensive to start with). Kids often in mismatched bright clothing and not "mini adult" clothes.

My friend told me that you could tell the kids parents relative wealth by how tidy the kids hair was, the messy natural kids were the posh ones, immaculate French plaits and perfectly matched clothing were not. My kids obviously looked super wealthy Grin I never got the hang of my hair let alone theirs and it was whatever clothes I picked up from the charity shop!

rorosemary · 14/10/2020 15:58

The richest person I know (think around 35 million or so) wears second hand clothes till they fall apart due to enviromental reasons. They look almost homeless Grin.

Doughnutlady · 14/10/2020 16:21

Good to see that the scruffy Volvo estate with dog hair myth is still getting wheeled out. It’s lovely and romantic I guess Grin

I love these threads they are my guilty pleasures, humans are funny creatures really.

Ffs, I wasn’t the only person who replied to that comment. Not sure why you picked on my response.

White teeth. Big teeth. Straight teeth.

Jennygentle · 14/10/2020 16:26

I work with lots of very wealthy people. The richest are often the least polished in appearance by some margin.

It's having the absolute confidence in yourself to appear however you like.

ChooksAndBooks · 14/10/2020 16:31

In general people who are truly wealthy don't feel the need to prove it to anyone by being flashy or by buying certain things.

The wealthiest person I know in real life lived on a vast estate but drove around with their number plate stuck onto their old banger with duct-tape. They didn't care.

Personally I think really showy wealth actually looks a bit cheap and tacky. Kind of like a footballer's wives kind of vibe.

ChooksAndBooks · 14/10/2020 16:36

" Posh people have posh chin, if you haven't noticed, look."

Interested in what a posh chin is. Could you please elaborate or post a pic?

Janegrey333 · 14/10/2020 16:39
@W3dontdoduvets Perhaps, but that's the reality. I am sorry if you don't want to hear about first hand experience, I thought it was one of the "raison d'etre" of these forums, to exchange with people you wouldn't necessarily be mixing with in real life.
I come from what many PP would call a posh background (old money, landowners etc) and have been told that no matter how scruffy I think I am, I will always look posh.

As a sideline reading the whole thread, I am amazed at some of the generalisations... Not all "titled" people are kind and down to earth and treat people well. Fortunately many do but I know more than a handful (big titles + lot of money) that are absolutely obnoxious. Some rich people let their children look scruffy and some don't. With mines I have given up this battle (except for special occasions) but my SILs' children always look smart, with the perfect haircut, having to wear shirts instead of t shirts, no hoodies, rarely wear denims, girls typically wear peter pan collars with cardigans and smoke dresses (pink and frills and very long hair are a big NO for girls).
With mines...

No, absolutely not. The Royal family have terrible teeth. Paying to have teeth straightened or whitened would never occur to them.
Janegrey333 · 14/10/2020 16:58

Having false teeth - and that is what veneers etc are - is not posh.

The chin is largely absent. Inbreeding is said to be a factor.

Because not every girl from a humble background will have hard features. I said I'd observed a trend. And I have observed it now for many years

Janevaljane · 14/10/2020 17:04

No posh rich people drive volvos covered in dog hair any more Grin

gindinner · 14/10/2020 17:24

I once dated someone who was the son of an Earl. I had no idea, until I went to his parents old manor. He never spent a lot of money, wore charity shop clothes, but was well mannered. We were students, in the Marxist society, and spent a lot of time campaigning against the Tories.

Fluffybutter · 14/10/2020 17:25

I’ll get flames but meh ..
I usually find you can tell rich peoples kids as they look like they’ve been dressed in the dark .

Maybe not old volvos but definitely battered old land rovers.
