What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

My mother once met Price Charles at a charity function in a line up. She said afterwards it was the first time she had seen someone in person wearing a proper tailored suit as opposed to an off the peg one, just a normal wool suit but she said there was just something about it that made him look "expensive". So I suppose very good quality well fitting clothes, even when they're not new or exciting.

Doughnutlady · 13/10/2020 23:00

@SideAfries

Speaking from experience (I have been told I would look expensive or equivalent with a bin bag on)

😂

And double GrinGrin

Such an interesting question.

I was in a ‘posh’ country pub/restaurant a while ago. Every one had a Range Rover, designer clothes, etc - looking the part.
This old metro rolled in with 4 scruffy adults and you just knew they were rich, it was really weird.
I spent the whole meal watching them trying to eavesdrop - definitely landed gentry, but I couldn’t tell you why Grin

ToastyCrumpet · 13/10/2020 23:08

Do you remember the start of Four Weddings and a Funeral? Hugh Grant and his flatmate head off to a posh wedding in a knackered mini? I read a comment at the time that Richard Curtis, who wrote the screenplay, clearly knew posh people inside out because he dared to have them in that car.

purpleme12 · 13/10/2020 23:08

I was in Leeds recently and saw a woman who I just thought was really rich.
Very coiffed and 'perfect' looking knee high boots, bare legs, a cape, perfectly done hair and make up and a designer hat. Other clothes probably designer (I thought so anyway)
That is what appears to me as rich

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 23:08

Because they were very confident in a relaxed way and didn't give a toss what anyone else might think.

Would be my guess NoProblem.

I think the class system in England is alive and well tbh but hard to put your finger on it if you're from this culture.

zatarontoast · 13/10/2020 23:10

Upper class people always have really good upright posture, great bone structure and a toned body. They could wear a potato sack and have straw in their hair but they still look regal. No amount of grooming/money spent will replicate this look in a short fatty like me.

stopgap · 13/10/2020 23:13

If in the city:

Subtly colored hair
Pilates-honed body
Tiny bit of makeup, but not so much as to take away from skin kept in top condition from Fraxel, hydra facials etc.

In the country: Waistcoats, Dubarry boots, subscriber to hunts in Leicestershire.

Notsayingnothin · 13/10/2020 23:21

I think there are certain looks that scream money, in a safe Tory Wife way but they do not say style, class or someone you actually want to talk to. I don’t know anyone who wears a stupidly expensive handbag and impresses. Wear it love it but no one else gives a shit!

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 23:23

'I think the class system in England is alive and well '

'Upper class people always have really good upright posture, great bone structure and a toned body'

😂😂😂

notquiteruralbliss · 13/10/2020 23:31

Polo ponies? Casual disregard for fashion? Expensive hobbies with no need to work?

nancybotwinbloom · 13/10/2020 23:31

No boobs out.

Beiges, neutral colours. Things hard to keep clean.

No sportswear.

Smooth hair.

Good watch. Good bag.

What's more, their stools are perfectly formed and odour free.

IME, the more money someone has, the scruffier they look, the older their Barbour and Volvo estate car (both of which are covered in hairs) and they often smoke, probably Dunhill or B&H (perhaps the more elegant lady may have Sobraines for a night out). The women always seem to know a lot about Scotch.

Iamthewombat · 13/10/2020 23:36

Truly wealthy people don't advertise their wealth.

This old metro rolled in with 4 scruffy adults and you just knew they were rich, it was really weird.

With apologies to the poster on a similar thread from whom I nicked this response:

Who is buying all the superyachts then?

Osirus · 13/10/2020 23:36

The only rich people I know dress just like everyone else, on the whole. No designer stuff. No showing off. The rich people I’m referring to are big land owners, with huge country (and village!) estates. Gentry some of them.

The difference is absolutely confidence.

This, absolutely.
Imissmoominmama · 13/10/2020 23:39

I think it’s usually an accent, a balanced, intelligent view of life, and a respect for others.

Iamthewombat · 13/10/2020 23:41

What, ALL rich people? Including Philip Green, say? Mike Ashley?

whataballbag · 13/10/2020 23:41

The richest man I know drives a car that cost him £500 and buys all his clothes from charity shops.

Probably why he's rich.

Guineapigbridge · 13/10/2020 23:42

Rich people never wear synthetic clothing. It's all wool, silk, cashmere, linen.
Good hair is also a marker. This comes from regular cuts and avoiding detergent-based, supermarket shampoos and never using supermarket dyes. And a good diet with fish protein / omega 3s.
And good shoes. Leather sneakers or leather sandals.

I can tell people with money from their clothes, hair and shoes alone.

Itisbetter · 13/10/2020 23:43

Do you mean Boris style or celeb?

ViciousJackdaw · 13/10/2020 23:44

Who is buying all the superyachts then?

Rich Arabs and Russians with their frightfully tacky new money, one would think.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 13/10/2020 23:47

Funny I thought exactly about Philip Green too when I read that.

Guineapigbridge · 13/10/2020 23:47

Superyachts very vulgar. Russian oligarchs and Turkish property/drug tycoons buy them. English Nouveau Riche might splash out on a yacht from time to time but never the proper, old fashioned monied types. They would holiday on land somewhere in Europe instead.
