What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

Oohh I remember this. Hai zombie 😊

ChockaChick · 20/07/2021 23:44

Showing up in your own fully-staffed yacht (bonus points if it has a helipad on the back). That would definitely suggest wealth.

Guineapigbridge · 20/07/2021 23:47

I know a lot of multi millionaires. Common themes in how they present: all health-conscious (none are overweight), all wear low key clothes (none wear designer or labelled clothing; they'll all wear good quality basics like Icebreaker or Untouched World or Calvin Klein) and all (ALL) rise early like 5:30am for yoga or exercise.

Guineapigbridge · 20/07/2021 23:50

Oh yes, and good hair due to good diet and regular maintenance.

Yesitsbess · 20/07/2021 23:52

I haven't RTFT but I have a friend who is incredibly "old money" and titled. He generally rocks up on a bicycle looking like he did a trolley dash through various skips on his way there, however his shoes are always impeccable .

They have their own spacecraft.

HollowTalk · 21/07/2021 00:11

@seriouslynotserious

Not having an ounce of body fat on their body. Ime, they eat for the nutrients and experience not to fill themselves up. Also it's very common for little ones to do loads of physical activities after school but in my generation, I wasn't sent to do ballet, gymnastics and horse riding, hence my body shape is very different to them as I didn't come from a wealthy family. My only physical activity was P.E, bike riding and running around in the park.
Well the queen isn't slim, is she?
wanttomarryamillionaire · 21/07/2021 00:32

@HollowTalk, the queen is her 90's fgs!!!! Both her and her sister were absolutely tiny when younger.

Zilla1 · 21/07/2021 00:51

IME there is no consistent signal for the wealthy - worth £10m+?) and often those who think there are are only looking at a subset of the wealthy. Looking at examples from different backgrounds. Often the landed rejoice in old tatty but previously good quality clothes though try hards will buy and wear the same though new. These are people who might agree with the insult used against Heseltine - Someone who looks like they bought their furniture or it all matches. Luxury cars are not a reliable signal as often battered Land Rover Defenders are preferred but off road racers like those too.

City and self made and professionals will often go for more obviously branded or designer clothes and jewellery and luxury cars but then in that sphere try hards try to wear or buy the same.

beigebrownblue · 21/07/2021 01:00

Lots of people who think they are materially 'rich'

are actually culturally and socially deprived.

If they measure 'richness' by the kind of handbags they have,
My God, they lost it a long time ago.

Times they are a changin.

Elys3 · 21/07/2021 01:14

I don’t think it’s much to do with the clothes, although I agree that the rich tend to wear understated basics. I think it’s the result of years of good diet, sport and low stress that show on the face and body.

Heronwatcher · 21/07/2021 07:46

ZOMBIE! But honestly such a load of old rubbish on this thread- makes me realise why the likes of Boris and Cameron keep getting elected. It’s like too much Downton Abbey has turned everyone into class worshipping, cap doffing sycophants like something from the Victorian age.

Absolutely true

Coronavirus has changed a few things, that’s for sure. The school run is full of fatter, scruffier parents with bad hair Grin.
I'm one of these😩

To be Irene Forte & her sister Lydia have the perfect understated "rich girl" look... Their dad is Rocco Forte so they're proper rich!

Appearing in Forbes is the rich girl look!
Homeontherangeuk · 21/07/2021 11:12

I also think she has the thick, flowing locks, perfect carmel hair colour, minimal make up & the skin tone which shows she travels alot... A colleague of mine was in school with Irene & her sister, said they were very quiet, hard-working girls

CocoStar555 · 21/07/2021 12:32

I think the reason some of the "nouveau riche" look cheap and trashy is because that particular style (blingy display of wealth by wearing designer brands etc) has been copied by a lot of people who can't afford it (i.e. have taken on debt or buying fake designer items). The fact that some poor people try to look this way has a downgrading effect on others with the same style.

The nouveau riche are likely buying such items because being able to buy expensive things was something they could not do before they were wealthy (it's having a new freedom to spend). Non-wealthy people, on the other hand, tend to want to project an image that they are doing better than they are (it's a form of insecurity).

CocoStar555 · 21/07/2021 12:44

Saw a woman once who looked wealthy even though she was dressed casually in a plain t-shirt and cropped trousers. No jewellery or designer handbags, or expensive watch (that I could see). She did have a tan and glowing (moisturised) skin. Her clothes were not flashy but they looked neat and crisp, which is why she looked so well put together. The crispness you get when you wear new clothes for the first time.

I think this is why there are so many comments on old wealth wearing old but good quality items of clothing. Good quality clothes will last and look good (like the crisp newness of a new t-shirt) for a long time. Fast fashion will usually degrade after the first wash.

CocoStar555 · 21/07/2021 12:51

IMO, those commenting on the slimness, attractiveness or harshness of facial features are probably falling victim to cognitive bias. Noticing people who have these attributes and are waelthy but failing to notice those who don't. Stereotypes are creeping in and I'm sure we are all conjuring up images of the kind of people being described.

@Notsayingnothin

Queen is short and fat as was her mother...just saying. Some people seem to get an fawning image in their heads about the upper classes - you’d think they were saints 😂
But remember that according to Lady Colin Campbell, the QM was the offspring of a French cook, hence her being disdainfully nicknamed ‘Cookie’ by Wallis Simpson, and — presumably — her podgy figure and poor teeth. Grin
mabelandivy · 21/07/2021 13:36

Well there is old rich and nouveau riche.

Old rich: style, class and timeless classic clothes. Nothing overstated.

Nouveau riche: wearing latest designer clothes. Overstated and obvious.

Why do so many people think that people who earned their own money rather than inheriting it must be tasteless?

I thought you were talking about Boris. Then saw the shoe comment and realised it definitely wasn't him.
