What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

cococovido · 13/10/2020 21:44

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

Humility is simply unnecessary when you're rich.

LoisLane66 · 16/10/2020 13:43

@Othering
I agree. Je ne sais quois. It's the genetics and the absence of the latest trendy hairstyle. The clothes which could be any label but put together are comfortable and classy without trying, worn by men who understand that style has no date.

LoisLane66 · 16/10/2020 13:49

Women who wear Hunters often own Dubarrys too.
Your tone is very disparaging which makes you appear to be a label snob.
All that glisters is not gold (glisters is the original word, not glitters)
Money might can buy the label but in your case, not the class.

LoisLane66 · 16/10/2020 13:50
  • can, not might.

@zatarontoast

I have second hand embarrassment for the posters who think they are literally turning heads in the street.
Poor deluded people.
Janevaljane · 16/10/2020 14:10

What is it with this thing about true, rich, aristos being scruffy and wearing second hand clothes and filthy cars??!

Basically if you aren't rich and aristocratic, and you think you are really good friends with someone who is rich amd aristocratic, you either work for them or you aren't actually good friends with them. They don't socialise out of their social circle except on very rare occasions.

Janegrey333 · 16/10/2020 14:11

So let’s not namedrop Hunters from now on. 🤭Glad that’s been cleared up.

A myth.
BoulangerieBabs · 16/10/2020 14:14

@LoisLane66 what are you talking about?

Generally speaking the people that buy and wear Hunters these days are because they are seen as trendy. They're not what they used to be now they are made abroad, terrible quality. If you have friends that wear them then it's likely they are older and British-made when they were built to last.

What a silly thing to say. You clearly don’t understand how to behave properly.

What do people think of this picture? Rich or not? I think he looks rich. Lovely thick hair, great haircut, nice skin, poised, chinos, shirt, casual jacket but it's just that extra something that sets him apart that's so hard to quantify.
His jacket need shortening to fit, the arms are too long. So no he doesn't look well off. Tailored clothes generally denote money.
BathtubGin · 16/10/2020 15:16

@Janevaljane

Le chameau, dubarry or Aigle if you must (wellies)
Le chameau and aisle are on brand alley

He’s a model of some sort. The haircut is a bit Hugh Grant in ye olden days. The clothes are nice.
IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 17:30

The photo of the chap in the blue jacket? Looks like someone trying to look English posh. A tweed jacket and striped shirt would be the more usual look. The bright blue of the jacket looks either European or American posh. The hair is right. But the fact there's a jacket and a shirt at all is something.

GarlicSoup · 16/10/2020 17:39

Very old cashmere worn with a Hermes scarf.

fatimashortbread · 16/10/2020 18:33

Luxuriant Hair particularly on men

Ihatefish · 16/10/2020 18:49

@othering I’d say he looks like he’s a grammar school kid, turned up at the office for his first work experience day, been told tits a “dress for his day” Policy so doesn’t wear a suit but hasn’t got a clue what to wear. Possibly also his tinder picture

Othering · 16/10/2020 19:17

The young lad is royalty. Dutch I think, can't quite remember but that sort of region.

Is your image not the eldest Danish prince? Well yes, he is rich, although not personally given he’s only about 16. Guessing here.

ToryAldi · 16/10/2020 19:27

He looks like a Tory boy.

VinylDetective · 16/10/2020 19:35

His jacket is a very cheap shade of blue. Surely thick hair is genetic? My dad’s was very thick until the day he died, my grandad was a miner.

redvest · 16/10/2020 20:01

Used to temp in offices in London. One was off Bond Street and a woman came in to chat to one of the owners. Could tell by her accent she was upper class, but also she just looked 'glossy'. Shiny hair, perfect dewy skin, lovely figure and wrinkle free clothes.

EvaporatedHour · 16/10/2020 20:16

My friend looks 'rich'. She isn't rich, and isn't from a rich background and wasn't privately educated, there's just something about her.

She's got really thick shiny hair, which she usually has in a bob slightly above shoulder length, and she's also always had nice skin. She's slim but not skinny, 5ft 3 in height, and dresses in quite a classic, simple way, which really suits her. She does have a (real) Louis Vuitton bag but she's had it for over 20 years. I know she doesn't buy expensive clothes though, and mostly wears clothes from River Island, New Look, Primark, occasionally Topshop too.

I wrote The bright blue of the jacket looks either European or American posh and am tragically feeling pleased with myself now.

Dee1975 · 16/10/2020 20:23

I think hair is a big one. Rarely see a rich person with split ends. I’d say they afford (time and money) to have a regular trim every 6 weeks ...
