What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

I never wear a watch and almost never wear shoes either. Figure that one out!

IsThisCrazy · 15/10/2020 20:59

What counts as rich?

FelicisNox · 15/10/2020 21:05

Ski tan, great hair stylist and an innate sense of style..... also size 8 as standard.

ToryAldi · 15/10/2020 21:08

My mother often mentions our neighbour telling us in hushed tones that he's a millionaire - all of my siblings are too but my mum doesn't have a clue. 😂

RangasNugget · 15/10/2020 21:11

My niece is one of those women who just look polished. She's short, curvy, mixed race with wild hair. She looked like a scruffy bogan when she was young, but now even when she's dressed down she still just looks classy. She says we look alike but I still look like I eat dirt compared to her.

Straven123 · 16/10/2020 06:51

If I looked rich then I would be very cautious of being mugged etc

Women don't seem to wear expensive looking jewelry - it's a shame, I presume it's because of the risk of mugging.

Santina · 16/10/2020 09:58

The people you think look polished are probably the ones who aren't worried about what other people are wearing and not worried about getting it wrong trying to be a slave to stay on top of cheap nasty fashion, fake nails, ridiculous long eye lashes and other treatments and statements people think make them look good. I'm far too busy living my fulfilled life to worry about any of that, I don't know if I look polished or not, but I do feel people look at me when I walk along the street, if they're admiring me, good for them. If they're judging me, how sad for them. Don't worry about what others think, if you're happy with the way you look and comfortable with the clothes you wear, that's enough. Maybe stop trying to be like someone else, or something you're not.

amispeakingenglish · 16/10/2020 10:01

In my experience the very rich do not look rich, not if its older moneyI knew someone who is mega mega rich, international brand name product rich, and inherited half. She wore old shorts and t.shirts all the time, no glamour no excess... the nouveau rich however have something to prove.

Itisbetter · 16/10/2020 10:06

It’s all in the watch and the shoes, both of which will be old but looked after.

At the moment, given that we are in the midst of a pandemic with all its accompanying requirements and restrictions, it’s silly to deck yourself in baubles. Anyway. less is definitely more when it comes to jewellery.
Janegrey333 · 16/10/2020 10:27

The thought of all those aristos slobbing around with unkempt hair and horse manure under their fingernails is making me feel queasy. But it’s fine and dandy because they are showing off an ancient watch and equally ancient shoes!

Oh really, as the Queen would say, the ideas some posters have concocted are laughable!

ToryAldi · 16/10/2020 10:31

So it's ok for you to judge people who like fashion and fake nails but people who judge you are sad! Whoops! I think I might have just judged you! 😂😂😂

zatarontoast · 16/10/2020 10:37

I have second hand embarrassment for the posters who think they are literally turning heads in the street.

SecretSpAD · 16/10/2020 10:44

So dull though, who cares if they're rich?
Do they have brains, ideas, resilience, creativity, kindness, humility? Not necessarily, just money and time to spend on making themselves look good. So self indulgent and they might still lead boring uninspired lives.
I'd rather see someone with their own take on style (not fashion) - vintage, goth, hippy - anything rather than that kind of bland 'lux' style.

This, absolutely this.

To those who think these are some sort of superior beings....think about the Royal family. If they were just the Windsors from the suburbs, what would Andrew have done with his life? Charles would have ended up as a gardener and the village eccentric. Anne a groom at the local riding stables and Edward one of those people who drift through life and never get a proper job, just scrounge off family and on and off benefits. As for their parents.....Philip would be that obnoxious sailor and local racist and their mother a slightly dull SAHM (that is not an insult to SAHMs who are not dull btw).

It's the privilege and money that they were born into, the titles thst they give themselves and the palaces that they live in that gives them the gloss. That is true for many "old money" families (including some members of my own if I'm honest) - without the privilege they are non entities.

"Second hand embarrassment" brilliant! 🤣

Has anyone mentioned jumpers? Posh boys with their jumpers, preferably a good quality woolen mix which will last for years in a single colour, usually dark blue or dark grey. Often to be found with holes in it towards the end of its life. otherwise still looking smart.

Often combined with either a plain shirt or the slightly try too hard red stripey shirt underneath, with the collar showing. Paired with outdoorsy, Barbour type jacket, or for the man who has become slightly meterosexual and wants to fit in and look cool, one of those what used to be termed a donkey jacket. There will still be a jumper underneath though.

Overall though, not a bad look and certainly better than most!

You have just described my husband.
Janegrey333 · 16/10/2020 11:17

Woollen jumpers are essential.

IMO, the 'better off' in our community are usually seen in country clothing with hair loose or pulled into a ponytail. Hunter boots in winter, Hummer type vehicles for mum and Porsche/Merc/Audi/BMW at weekends. Dad usually dropped at station.
It's an area with an average house price of 3.5m.
Most kids are at private schools and have the school bus pick them up.
Classy, moneyed people do not flaunt their wealth with labels and many of them buy and sell unwanted or preloved items on NextDoor.
I find that most women either dont wear make-up or it's very minimal.
For big events they can certainly glam up but in an understated manner. When I moved here I found that my way of dressing was very different from the locals who all seemed to look the same, clothes-wise.

My VB skirts and Italian loafers have rarely seen daylight.
None of my friends have designer handbags (as far as I know) but strangely they have commented very favourably on two bags I own, one of which is a no known brand faux snakeskin bought on Ebay and the other, a £6 silver sequinned large tote bought in Primark, which has had innumerable admiring comments from strangers wondering where I bought it.
Rich, to me means nothing. It certainly doesn't mean class.
This is a dogs and horses area.
I think black, biscuity colours, cream, white and plain muted tones are classy, with a patterned neck scarf either rolled and tied round the neck to the side or back, or tied to your bag handle, to give the outfit a bit of interest.
Less is more. Massimo Dutti has some nice apparel.

Othering · 16/10/2020 12:57

What do people think of this picture? Rich or not? I think he looks rich. Lovely thick hair, great haircut, nice skin, poised, chinos, shirt, casual jacket but it's just that extra something that sets him apart that's so hard to quantify.

What makes someone look rich / wealthy?
Othering · 16/10/2020 13:01

People with money/horses etc don't wear Hunter wellies.....they wear Le Chameau.

StarUtopia · 16/10/2020 13:05

othering They wear Dubarry round here.

Xenia · 16/10/2020 13:10

I certainly don't want to look rich so if I don't that great (less chance of a robbery).I don't wear makeup etc.

I was watching the new series of Rivera on sky last night and the lady in that looks rich I think because of the jewellery and particularly good shoes.

BoulangerieBabs · 16/10/2020 13:26

My fil wears le chameau when he goes shooting. Another family member with horses wears Dubarrys. None of them would put Hunters on, they'd rather wear a pair of £7 ones from Shoe Zone because hunters are so crap.

ANoTail · 16/10/2020 13:37

@TwistAndTout

I'm very rich and I'd say what gives it away is just the air of confidence with which I carry myself. People automatically look up to people like that.
Are you sure it's not the humility?
