What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

New money : lots of garish labelled clothes, giant diamonds, multiple carts, multiple homes, always on holiday. Very showy.

Old money: you can’t tell. I know 3 people like this - you would never guess they were billionaires. Whereas you have your average millionaires that talk as if they were the queen of the world. 😂

That sounds ACE.

SecretSpAD · 15/10/2020 11:17

@Iamthewombat nah I don't. I don't think that I'm particularly special just because my dad happened to inherit a big (knackered) house when his brother died. We are all just accidents of our births and take away the money and privileges and we're all just mammals who need to eat and shit. That includes the royal family who I happen to know don't shit unicorns 🦄😱

SecretSpAD · 15/10/2020 11:18

Oh and "new money" whatever that really means is far more fun than "old money" generally because they are proper rich enough to actually live the lifestyle that they are leading.

Agreed. New money rules (I am not a richie). I wouldn’t care if anyone thought I was ‘showy’. I’d be having too much fun drinking Cristal and shopping for giant diamonds. In my multiple carts, drawn by horses wearing diamond necklaces.

BoulangerieBabs · 15/10/2020 11:49

I feel very poor, I really do.

I mean we're comfortable but we don't have one cart let alone multiple carts. I WANT A CART.

I'm sad now. Grin

@ToryAldi

What happens when new money moves in on old money and appropriates their culture - my guess - money moves on, they aren't quite so resilient...How many UC people stick around to defend Burberry - it's a tarnished brand - rats leaving a sinking ship. Who wears Hunter wellies now? They used to be a posh brand, apart from being crap they are worn by [gasp] townies - surely they have lost all their credibility. Barbour are everywhere - hardly posh - how do you distinguish yourself anymore - it hardly seems fair!😂

They’re a cliché. Who want to be this?

Well I'm from a council estate and still live in one I have LV Bag and shoes to match I work full time and bought them they are real I wear gym clothes and don't LOOK rich as u put it but iv savings and am good with money my oh only wears designer clothes an outfit including shoes is around 1-2000 that's not then including his watches 🙈🙈 but he earns a good wage I'm starting to think reading this do ppl think ours are fake lol never judge a book by it's cover

Conkergame · 15/10/2020 14:07

@ToastyCrumpet that is so true about expecting to get the best from everyone and getting it!

The poshest, richest woman I know goes round treating everyone like an old friend and like they’re excellent at their job. Everyone immediately warms to her and goes over the top to give her the best service possible! I sit back and watch in awe!

Conkergame · 15/10/2020 14:08

Should also say she often looks a bit scruffy - old but good quality outdoor wear is her staple

Janevaljane · 15/10/2020 14:23

Le chameau, dubarry or Aigle if you must (wellies)

IrmaFayLear · 15/10/2020 16:39

They are footballers’ wives wellingtons although, I admit, do show that you’ve got a bit of brass as they are expensive.

No offence as it's no skin off my nose but I think it's ridiculous to live on a council estate and spend thousands on clothes. It is really money down the drain imo.
Camomila · 15/10/2020 17:02

The best (as in waterproof and comfortable) wellies I've ever had are a 'girls size 3' I bought in Wilkinson's about 7 years ago!

I'd like to be 'old money' so I could have a library. I already have a scruffy Barbour coat (DMs 20+ years old) and my grandad used to take me to the local goat show with him as a day out...I'm basically half way there.

IrmaFayLear · 15/10/2020 17:36

Ah, yes. My Shoezone girls’ wellies are indestructible !!

areyoubeingserviced · 15/10/2020 17:39

The truth is that most ‘old money’ is asset rich and cash poor. They usually can’t actually afford to maintain their huge , run down homes. Their kids are usually in public schools using money from trusts.
They look down on ‘new money’ but envy them at the same time because the new money has access to cash.
Tbh all the doff capping from posters towards old money and berating new money explains why the class system is maintained.

areyoubeingserviced · 15/10/2020 17:45

Doffing of cap

Bearseatbeets · 15/10/2020 17:47

I’ve heard that if you go to test drive an expensive car they look at your shoes and your watch to figure out if you can really afford the car

Jonas14 · 15/10/2020 17:53

Often richest people look scruffy as hell. I have experience. Perhaps once nice clothes but worn to death, full of holes. Perhaps these are the old school rich lot.

nicegirl73 · 15/10/2020 18:02

This is a bit unfair though. I have LOTS of Gucci and Louboutins but I have my hair cut like once a year at the most and my nails never done, I hate the thought of people thinking my shoes are FAKE, I just really like the expensive shoes and clothes.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 15/10/2020 18:03

Always having a blow dry and no roots.
Immaculate footwear.
Quality accessories.
Nice car.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 15/10/2020 18:04

Well said

Why is it unfair?

You like what you like and do what you do. Why are you lacking the confidence to own your likes, it's not your problem if someone thinks you've got fake Laboutins on because your hair isn't coiffed and nails shellacked.

apostropheuse · 15/10/2020 18:19

Having read this thread, The Royal Family are an aberration! The Queen is a short arse, Andrew is rotund, Charles and Anne, God love them, have faces only a mother would love. The Queen Mother was fond of her food too. Hilarious reading here Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 15/10/2020 18:20

AND the Queen has a gold piano. Tacky as fuck.
