I've relented.

I've let the big, slobbery, smelly and gorgeous 4 legged thing that we call a dog get up on the settee with me.

He's settled down with a HUGE contented with his head on my lap and I've spent the last half hour stroking his silken ears.

DH thinks I'm a soft touch, I think DH is jealous!

JohHamm that would be ideal, but my cat hates dogs.

sandragreen · 10/10/2020 11:40

YANBU and I am very jealous Envy

Pinkyandthebrainz · 10/10/2020 11:44

YANBU. All my dogs have been allowed on the sofas however I must admit, I now have a breed which doesn't really malt which has made a massive difference. Cuddles with dogs are one of the best things in the world. Dogs are too good for us humans.

Sad

My old cat was the same. This one is much more mellow and it still took 6 months for him to be relaxed around the dog when we first brought him home.

BowowMttt · 10/10/2020 12:45

All these gorgeous dogs 🥺 I lost my old boy this year and miss him dearly. Especially the sofa and nighttime snuggles. I desperately need another dog but we are waiting for our toddler to learn how to behave around animals before we get another one.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 10/10/2020 12:50

Cuddly labs are the best

This is a most delightful thread, OP.
I've never understood the point of having a dog if it's not allowed upstairs/on the sofa/on lap etc. It's one of the nicest things in the world imo.
Ours sleeps on the bed too; it means that every day at least starts well (with fluffy cuddles) regardless of what happens later :)

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2020 13:13

Dog trainer hat on...

Dogs belong on sofas, beds, chairs, laps...

Dogs are social, gregarious creatures evolved to want to be with us, want us to fuss them, want to snuggle with us.

Dog was with man before the invention of the sofa or the bed, before in fact, the first ever DFS sale!

How do people without dogs pre-warm their spot in the bed. I require three hounds to warm my spot, and then they rearrange themselves to be big spoon, little spoon and footwarmer (hound four is small and useless he guards OH's knees for him lest the knee -theives come in the night).

movingonup20 · 10/10/2020 13:17

It's a slippery slope, before you know it it will be his sofa! Exh sent a picture of my boy's new "bed" aka the sofa I was planning on taking once my house purchase completes, think I'll be going to dfs instead!

I wish your husband all the luck in the world with that!
SecretSpAD · 10/10/2020 13:32

I'm sorry, you have a case of canine paralysis. You will now be unable to move until the dog decides you're allowed

Actually it's illegal to even attempt to move until the dog is ready. Grin

KarmaStar · 10/10/2020 13:34

A certain pup likes to sit next to me on the sofa so I keep a small throw on the seat for her.
If she's actually on her own memory mattress ,thickly cushioned dog bed I might put some paperwork on 'her' seat so she will get up,trot over and stare, without blinking,at me until I move the papers off her side so she can jump up.she doesnt.satisfied her seat is clear and ready for her,she goes back to her bed.makes me smile every time.

@NotTheMrMenAgain I love your bassethound. I've never had one, but now I'm working from home was wondering about getting one have a,ways loved them. Have a golden retriever and have a,ways had labs, retrievers. Was wondering what bassets are like? Sorry for the derail

Fluffingheck · 10/10/2020 13:46

We're getting this cutie in a fortnight. Already told my DH we're not bothering to go through the pretence of saying she won't be allowed on the sofa/upstairs etc... Can't wait!

@Nottobesoldseparately when we got the first of our (now) two dogs , my rule was not on the sofa - now , not only do I pick them up to have a cuddle on the sofa but in our wide bed I have bought an extra pillow to put in the middle of DH & me so small dog is comfy ( big dog sleeps at the foot of the bed - he prefers it)

I know I know many wouldn't countenance a dog on the bed - but it a great joy to me

VinylDetective · 10/10/2020 14:43

Ours doesn’t want to sleep with us but she bounds up the stairs every morning for a cuddle under the duvet.

Spidey66 · 10/10/2020 16:26

I want @Fluffinghecks puppy. Now, please, thank you.

SunshineCake · 10/10/2020 16:35

Ours wasn't going to be allowed on the sofa. She couldn't get up for ages then suddenly she could. We now have a new sofa and she is on it whenever she wants. She is fully grown and I only wish I had let her up on my knee when she didn't weigh 26 kilos Grin.

Glenthebattleostrich · 10/10/2020 16:40

My dog very kindly lets me share her dog beds (most people would call them the sofa and my bed but the dog thinks otherwise)

There's nothing better than my fluffy farty hot water bottle snuggled in on a cold day 😃

IamEarthymama · 10/10/2020 16:43

After a very nice walk and a visit to the garden of a cafe we are a little tired!

This boy, Fitzchivalry Farseer aka Fitz (we listened to the whole series through lockdown) has transformed our lives.

I adopted a 7 year old dog from Turkey last February. She is my first dog. She is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 10/10/2020 22:52

@SecretSpAD Oh my goodness, where can i begin about my Basset! She is the hound of my heart and we worship the ground she waddles onGrin I've had other dogs - Dobie and Weinmaraner - and loved them madly, but my Basset is a different kettle of fish altogether.

She has all of the typical Basset traits - stubbornness, determination, friendliness, cuddliness, sleepiness. She lives to sniff, eat, snuggle and snooze. She won't lie next to you when she can lie on top of you. She sleeps in my bed and will happily sleep 12 hours, spooning all night. She has the nicest nature of any dog I've known - unfailingly friendly, cheerful and optimistic. She loves to go to doggie daycare to play with her friends a few days each week, but she'll sleep most of the next day. You can't rush a walk with a Basset - each scent needs to be thoroughly sniffed and each human/dog thoroughly greeted.

Some people think they're not clever because of the time it takes to train them - but mine is very clever. She learnt how to ring the bells on the door to be let out into the garden in less than a day as a tiny pup. The following day she realised that if we had food she wanted but wouldn't give her, we'd leave it unattended to open the door if she rang the bells - and she could run back and make a grab for the food. Not daft!

I think she is just less eager to please by obeying commands than some breeds, unless she wants to do it or it's to her advantage. I can be calling her from end of the garden and she'll be sitting at the other end, clearly taking my request into consideration and deciding it she wants to comply. I read somewhere that you don't so much train a Basset as come to an understanding Smile

The ears do need to be cleaned inside and out very regularly - i do it each day - because they get dragged in stuff and have a waxy build up. Apart from that she's pretty low maintenance. They generally are very tolerant and gentle with kids and other pets - mine likes to gently lick DDs guinea pigs. She's a huge personality on short legs - her ears are so silky and her belly smells like popcorn.

You should definitely get one - I can't imagine you'd ever regret it Grin
