One reason people queue longer in the US is because the ballots take so fecking long to fill in because they have so many questions on them.
The most recent one I did was quite limited:
President
US Senator
US Representative
State Senator
State Representative
Register of Probate
Town Council
If I was voting in my nearest city I'd also be asked to vote on 5 referendum questions this time around eg minimum wage, regulation of rental properties, stuff related to the electricity board, all sorts.
There are often also state level referendum questions, although none this time. I did take great pleasure in making gay marriage legal in Maine that way a few years ago.
There's often a town budget, school budget, and all sorts of other random positions to vote on - School Board, Water Board, Dog Catcher, County Sheriff, etc.
Often also some state level bond issues to be approved or not.
Here are the results for the elections in July in Maine - if you click on all the different boxes you can see what we voted on back then, and that was a fairly small election, mostly primaries rather than what we'll see in Nov.
