to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I always think its people not having the taste to match their money.

I have plenty of designer handbags but none in a vulgar logo print or advertising a brand.

But to each their own I suppose.

katy1213 · 11/10/2020 17:53

I think they're horrible- but it's so hard to find a bag, in any price range, without tacky logos.

BlueThistles · 11/10/2020 17:53

Im not sure why OP targeted LV ... why not target her anger at lets the say the Burberry branding.. ? 🌺

Itsmybirthday19 · 11/10/2020 17:56

@Macncheeseballs it might save time if you told us whom you don't consider an idiot?

But what would I know? I've only attended two Russell group universities... and I'm sure Mensa got my results wrong...

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 11/10/2020 17:56

I’ve got more self esteem, happiness and indeed inner peace (how wanky is that) from self help books than I’ve ever got from a fancy, show off accessory - and I’ve had many of those in my time!

Itsmybirthday19 · 11/10/2020 17:58

@BojoKilledMyMojo I'd love to hear more about your bags? Always on the lookout for a new paramour...

It doesn't sound like it 😏

Itsmybirthday19 · 11/10/2020 18:13

I don't know that I walk into Selfridges looking to find inner peace, so that's not analogous.

I do rather loathe this assumption that people buy things to mask some personal defect. Whatever happened to enjoying things for their own sake?

I like handbags. I always have. I don't think there is any particular cachet in them, I just want the ones I want. I have all sorts, from wonderful vintage pieces to this season's Chanel. I collect them, I suppose and I love each and every one. I'm not about to stop enjoying them because someone on the Internet doesn't sanction that enjoyment.

Some people collect charms for their Pandora bracelet. I don't really care for them, but I'm fucked if I'm going to start a thread on the Internet trying to make someone feel shitty and small for liking what they like. It does not affect me in any way if someone enjoys something I don't, so I'd be an incredibly patronising, parochial prick to try and diminish someone else's small pleasures, wouldn't I? 🙂

happilybemused · 11/10/2020 18:42

To answer the OP's question clearly not judging by this thread.

I'm going to have to up my game. Also I do like the colour brown.

Next week are people buying a Hermes Birkin just trying to look wealthy?

Rishi can stand down. Tomorrow's announcement will not effect any of the Mumsnet community.

I love the louis Vuitton stuff, and will have one for my 30th birthday next month. I always liked them but tend not to wear them unless I'm going somewhere nice. I like many others om this thread go for more understated designs, Gucci has done me well in that respect

Gwenhwyfar · 11/10/2020 19:08

Those ugly brown things? Of course they're just to show off.

honeygirlz · 11/10/2020 19:14

All the people who can’t spot a fake LV and think they’re all fake must be spectacularly thick. I don’t even own one (except the fake one I shared a pic of on page 1) and I can spot a fake one from a real one a mile off! I don’t need to assume all are fake to make myself feel better.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 11/10/2020 19:15

Don’t get what you mean BlueThistles

honeygirlz · 11/10/2020 19:15

@Remylover

I always think gypsys always wear them them always looks tacky.
A bit racist, no?
Dawnlassie · 11/10/2020 19:19

Never understood the desire to spend such money on a handbag. Even if a £1200 LV bag is better quality (not saying it is) than a £50 handbag then for it to be a financially smart move it would need to last 24 times longer. Really cant see that happening. Dont think its a nice design either so imo its just to say 'I have spend over a thousand pounds on a bag. Arent I something special'.

I will pay money for expensive items where I can actually see the benefit of having it over a cheaper alternative. But the older I get the less frequently I am inclined to spend more on so called designer brands.

mbosnz · 11/10/2020 19:21

I bought one because I loved that particular design. It is not plastered with the logo, you'd actually have to know your handbags to know it was LV. I bought it with my last pay before I went home, to have children, and it was very much a last hurrah to a life where I could be a spendthrift, lol.

mbosnz · 11/10/2020 19:22

Oh, it was £500, from Selfridges, I have no idea what it would be worth now, but it still looks like new.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/10/2020 19:58

I've got some lovely designer bags but really dislike heavily logod items.
Just like the vast majority have said, they tend to look fake and also tend to be used by someone desperately wanting to appear to have money and be classy, but unfortunately do the exact opposite. They seem to attract the Geordie Shore ladies/football WAGS - I know I'm generalising and of course there'll be a few exceptions but that seems to be where it appeals.

LizzieSiddal · 11/10/2020 22:57

Honey indeed it is racist, I’ve reported.

LizzieSiddal · 11/10/2020 23:04

I have several older Mulberry bags (before they IMO, went a bit tacky) which I love and are still going strong after many years. I really don’t like to wear anything which is instantly recognisable as a “label”, but don’t judge anyone else who does. People are thankfully allowed to spend their money on what they wish, in this country!

Itsmybirthday19 · 12/10/2020 02:20

You're not wrong, plastic will outlast canvas and leather.

Who needs marine life anyway?

Itsmybirthday19 · 12/10/2020 02:31

@Remylover

I always think gypsys always wear them them always looks tacky.
Say always again....

I always think racists always use inconsequential internet discussions as a platform for their grammatically-redundant bigotry.

BetsyBigNose · 12/10/2020 06:02

@PhlegmyHead - I completely agree with you, I'm certainly not a fan of these, or of flashily branded bags in general.

However, I do feel the need to ask; "having watched a lot of construction videos"... why?!?

HeronLanyon · 12/10/2020 06:32

I’ve never understood the bag thing.
Watching eg ‘million dollar listing’ with huge closets with display wall for bags never used for fear of damaging them is just mind bendingly crazy to me.
Because I know nothing about ‘luxury’ bags I often assume what I see are fake But sometimes not when worn by someone clearly wealthy.
