Did you regret grey carpet?

We are about to get our stairs, landing and 2 bedrooms done. We will get the same carpet throughout. We initially said grey as it's versatile, but the more I think about it the more I'm unsure.

We had a light cream before, bad choice with two babies at the time!

Does it get boring? Do you wish you went for another colour? We haven't decided on pain colours for the walls yet, but they won't be grey!

We’ve got grey throughout our house and I’m very happy with it as with accessories you can make things quite different; I do think grey needs a bit of a pop of colour somewhere which can be trickier with hallways but can be done with pictures

Florencex · 08/10/2020 06:59

We have had grey carpet for a couple of years, also previously had cream. No I do not regret the grey at all, it is very versatile. The walls of the hall and landing are pale grey, but none of the other walls are grey.

Coriandersucks · 08/10/2020 06:59

I regret it, but only because we went with light grey walls and whilst I like them the carpet makes it too much ‘Mrs hinch’ for my taste now, I wish I’d gone with a natural colour. Plus lots of offices have grey carpets so it doesn’t feel very homely.

I've had the same as you OP. Tbh, I don't pay much attention to it as it's stairs and not living room. It's great at hiding any stains etc (dd got lipstick over it and if you look closely you can still see a mark, but you have to be looking for it iyswim. the red nail varnish is a little different Angry. Also hides cat hair Blush
It's fine. I do think it's a little dark for my particular house and when I replace it, I will probably choose a dark biscuit colour. But it was fab in my last house which was much brighter in the hallway and landing.

Oldenoughtobedead · 08/10/2020 07:03

I find grey a depressing colour - it’s not warm enough and over time starts to feel like a grey cave of despair. I wouldn’t buy a house with a grey carpet. You can get neutral coloured carpets eg digestive biscuit that are equally practical but more uplifting.

Mine was lovely until my step children moved in and it's now filthy! I'm planning on swapping to a wooden floor.

ivfbeenbusy · 08/10/2020 07:04

We used to have grey carpets and to be honest I found them a bit "cold" also it can be difficult to match paint colours etc - you end up with blue everywhere? We have brown now which is much more versatile

GVmama · 08/10/2020 07:25

I find grey a bit too cold as well although I have seen it brightened up with coloured accessories nicely, . We will be recarpeting the stairs in the next few months and I have no idea what colour to go for, but it won’t be grey. Probably a beige taupe colour but I don’t love the idea. I wish I loved grey as it’s the perfect colour for the stairs in my house!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/10/2020 07:31

No I don't regret it. We have it on our stairs but we have teal on the large wall going up the stairs, then a blue wallpaper with pretty birds on it on other walls in the hall and on the landing so it isn't a grey space.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/10/2020 07:31

Its very office like. I briefly considered it for the stairs since its quite forgiving but Ive decided against it. Grey carpet and grey walls would look like you're a Mrs Hinch fan so I think you've made the right decision there to go wth something else. White looks nice with dark grey carpet but you then need to inject warmth (and texture) somewhere.

Maireas · 08/10/2020 07:35

I find grey a bit cold and depressing. I have wooden floors, but on the stairs a striped carpet like a Paul Smith design.
Maybe orange or red walls to cheer the place up?

SilentAlarm · 08/10/2020 07:38

We have a light grey in the living room/stairs/upstairs and i love the colour but do regret not going for something darker, at least in the living room. With two dogs (one a puppy at the time of getting the carpet laid), it’s looking grubby and we’ve only been here two years. We will be replacing the living room carpet with wood flooring in the new year.

Fluffybutter · 08/10/2020 07:39

Nope.
Grey is the perfect colour for carpet as it goes with so many other colours .
We have dark grey throughout our house and it’s aged well .
Have chosen a different grey for our new house too .

Solasum · 08/10/2020 07:41

I have ‘greige’ in hallways and stairs. After two years it is still immaculate.

Florencex · 08/10/2020 07:44

@DrMadelineMaxwell

No I don't regret it. We have it on our stairs but we have teal on the large wall going up the stairs, then a blue wallpaper with pretty birds on it on other walls in the hall and on the landing so it isn't a grey space.
I find grey matches so many colours. My carpet is light to mid grey, I have teal sofas and I have a feature wall which has teal in the design, the rest of the walls are ivory.
funnyoldonion · 08/10/2020 07:44

I regret the darker grey especially in the living room as like peolpe say it's cold and office like and I have a lot of browns, tans and creams so it doesn't match. The lighter creamy grey i have in the bedrooms, I love but we have rteals, blues and pinks in those rooms. If I were to choose grey next time I'd go for a Warmer toned one.

ageingdisgracefully · 08/10/2020 07:45

I have a dark charcoal grey. My neighbourhood is filthy, so a light carpet not an option.

It hasnt been cleaned since i had it - 10 years ago. Blush

I'm a bit fed up now with it tbh but it so practical i can't think of s better option

LagneyandCasey · 08/10/2020 07:45

We have mocha carpet similar to this throughout. It has a warm feel and goes with all colours chemes. Dds room is very modern and grey and the carpet blends right in. I think having oak internal doors pulls it all together

Did you regret grey carpet?
Livpool · 08/10/2020 07:46

We have grey carpets on stair and landing and still like it. Dark enough to not look grubby and it is neutral so walls can be any colour

FluffyPJs · 08/10/2020 07:49

We used to have beige carpets - here when we moved in - which I hated and they always looked dirty even after using the carpet cleaner. We recently changed them for light, silvery grey carpets and it's amazing - they look lovely, they are light enough that the rooms don't feel dark, and they go really well with the sage green curtains and bedding we have.

Sunshine1235 · 08/10/2020 07:50

We have the same as @LagneyandCasey and I much prefer it to grey. It’s much warmer (so you can leave some walls white if you want and it doesn’t feel cold) and also the slightly speckled and textured effect means it doesn’t show every speck of dirt!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 08/10/2020 07:50

Ds has a light grey carpet in his bedroom and it works really well with his dark blue and magnolia bedroom. He's had it years and it has never needed to be cleaned (but it is a bedroom and there's no food, drink or outdoor shoes up there).

Zoflorabore · 08/10/2020 07:51

We have a mid grey carpet in the living room and then up the stairs and on the landing.
They are being replaced soon and we’re going for grey again but a few shades darker. It’s extremely forgiving!

BobCat2020 · 08/10/2020 07:53

The problem with grey carpet is that property developers seem to use it as their 'go to' as an on trend colour. I've seen so many properties on Right Move with the same old grey carpets. If you plan to sell anytime soon, I would be tempted to go for a different neutral colour. The grey trend is definitely on its way out.
