Did you regret grey carpet?

We are about to get our stairs, landing and 2 bedrooms done. We will get the same carpet throughout. We initially said grey as it's versatile, but the more I think about it the more I'm unsure.

We had a light cream before, bad choice with two babies at the time!

Does it get boring? Do you wish you went for another colour? We haven't decided on pain colours for the walls yet, but they won't be grey!

I have grey in my living room that I don't regrer. It does get dirty easily (children, cats, dog) but I do love it.

I recently got very dark grey on my stairs and landing which actually turned out to be almost black and although it looks great I regret that as every single bit of fluff shows up. Especially as the bedroom carpets are old cream ones and the threads are loose so there is constantly bit of cream fluff all over the landing (and bits of toilet roll thanks to the toddler Hmm)

I need to hoover up here all the time now.

I'm about to have my carpets fitted and have gone for a mushroom grey.... when put next to a grey it doesn't look grey at all. More of a light natural tone.

I had a light grey in my daughters room and although it looks nice, it looks cold (her walls have colour on them too)

Icequeen01 · 08/10/2020 08:07

I think it depends on the shade of grey and what decor you have. We have a light grey carpet on the stairs and landing and I think it looks fab and certainly not office like. My DS has just had a darker grey carpet fitted in his bedroom and it does look a bit office like but then we needed a hard wearing office like carpet due to his constant back and forth on his gaming chair 🙄

Meant to say, the photo shows my grey carpet which is now 3 years old. There are 3 adults in the house and 3 very hairy cats and it is still very clean looking.

Macaroni46 · 08/10/2020 08:22

@Icequeen01 I love your wallpaper

Sam1515 · 08/10/2020 08:30

We had grey and after I while I just found it too bland. We swapped to a rose gold colour and I don’t regret it as it adds a bit of warmth to the rooms

DynamoKev · 08/10/2020 08:31

Yes I wish we had chosen something wonderfully ornate like we used to have in the 70s

LagneyandCasey · 08/10/2020 08:35

@Whatsmydoggy

I need to hoover up here all the time now.
Is that a dog/cat laying on the carpet or a wierd shadow?Shock
userxx · 08/10/2020 08:40

Nope, love my dark grey flecked carpet 👍

PurplePansy05 · 08/10/2020 08:41

Don't go for dark grey.

We have light grey and mid grey in parts of the house and it's fab. No kids, but three pets so also a challenge. There really are duff shades and it all depends on your decor. I'd go with a shade that reflects natural light nicely. Get a sample first, see what it looks like at different times of the day. I never regretted our choices, they look great.

ToastyCrumpet · 08/10/2020 08:42

I had very pale grey in my last but one flat, 30 years ago, and loved it. At the time it was an unusual colour to have.

PurplePansy05 · 08/10/2020 08:43

Different not duff 🙄

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 08/10/2020 08:44

We got a grey carpet 5 years ago. I now look at it and wonder why I would pick such a depressing colour! Almost a non-colour! I don't regret it as I liked it at the time, and I don't hate it now, but it is boring.

AlpineSnow · 08/10/2020 08:44

No it's great. The shade i got doesn't show the dirt. It's a bit flecked. The only other grey thing in the house is the sofa. Nothing else

PurplePansy05 · 08/10/2020 08:46

Also I disagree grey is on the way out. The all grey trend is definitely on the way out, it's always been naff. But grey mixed with other colours is here to stay.

Cocolapew · 08/10/2020 08:48

I had was dying for a silvery grey carpet but hated it. Stuck it for a few years but have just changed it to blue

Mid grey is great. Dark shows fluff and light dirt.

It goes with everything and it’s not cold if you do your colours carefully re walls and accessories. It’s just a neutral which is a bit more modern than a beige (makes me shudder with thoughts of growing up inthe 80s when absolutely everything was beige bleurgh)

Im of the view that unless you’ve gone for a complete statement you shouldn’t really notice flooring though, it should offset your decor and draw you to that?

WanderingMilly · 08/10/2020 08:51

I absolutely love my grey carpet, had a large area of my flat done with it, it's beautiful. Nice colour, compliments the colour scheme, "lifts" the whole area. Wish I could afford to have the whole place done in the same carpet but not got the money....

Snowpatrolling · 08/10/2020 08:53

I have great in my living room and bedrooms.
I like it as it goes with any colour.
So the living room is grey with teal
Kids room grey with blush pink accessories/bedding
My room grey carpet, one black paper wall with sparkles and magnolia. Doesn’t feel cold, always feels cosy, and hides a multitude of spills and messes!!!!

GrossePois · 08/10/2020 08:56

The house we moved into has grey carpet in every room. But it’s brand new and good quality so didn’t feel I wanted to rip it up. I just added rugs, art, bedsheets and colourful chairs and cushions and it’s taken the focus away. But also it meant we could add pretty much any colours we wanted to any room as it is quite versatile.

serenoa · 08/10/2020 09:00

I have a mid-grey carpet in the living room, stairs and bedrooms; put in by the developers. This was the show house when I moved in three years ago. I wouldn't have chosen it, but it's not offensive. The other flooring downstairs is a mid-grey wood laminate. The walls are still the original very pale paint that's a knock-off of a Farrow & Ball colour I think is called Skimming Stone. I have photos, prints and pictures all over, and the gold suite really shows up well. Friends say it looks 'together' and 'very modern' but I don't love it.

WiggleSquiggle · 08/10/2020 09:01

We bought new carpets last year for in the H,S&L and the bedrooms.
The bedrooms are a pearlescent white/grey and the HS&L are a darker, yet still light grey. It goes with the decor in each room well, reflects light nicely (which is hard in a terraced house with no natural light in the hallway save for the small window next to the front door) and it really warms everything up.
We have light sage walls in the HS&L and used to have dark grey carpets in there from the old owners and hated it. Just changing the colour of the carpet has meant we now love the space, plus the carpet type is plush and soft so it’s like waking in a cloud.

oakleaffy · 08/10/2020 09:10

@Emcont
Mum has a ''Dirt coloured'' natural brownish grey Carpet in pure wool from John Lewis..It looks fine.
But she has coloured tribal rugs over it.
one thing re pure wool carpets....Several people I know who went ''All natural'' where there were carpets {wool} is moth.

They absolutely love pure wool. Hoovering doesn't really seem to stop them, esp in older houses {Georgian/Victorian}
Moth seems not to be as much of a problem in modern houses.

AllDayHappyHour · 08/10/2020 09:13

I did not want any grey but found this amazing wall colour by Valspar which is a very light lilac/blue grey as I wanted a neutral wall. We then went with what I would call a "greige" carpet. It's like a grey but not, we had beige in our old house and I found that dated quickly and while I'd prefer cream (oh the dream!) we have children haha. This is the carpet which I'd recommend you get a sample off, it shows as dark in the picture but it really isn't and we have it in the living room and will have it for the stairs and landing too.
